We absolutely live Cabezon, the food is great, the service excellent always, great cocktails and a bargain for what you get. Been so many places in Portland, more expensive and never as good or the service is never as good. This is amazing find!!!!
Food was amazing, the restaurant was beautiful, parking is my only gripe. Street parking only, so I had to do a bit of a hike before a date.
First time for all four of us in the party. The food and service were above par! Highly recommend this restaurant for all seafood lovers. The decor is absolutely spectacular too!
Cabezon never disappoints.
Creative takes on mostly seafood with dishes you won't find elsewhere even when you have seen the name of the dish before (onion tart, cajun grouper). Friendly, knowledgeable and prompt service with an excellent wine list at appropriate prices.
Only downside is hard wooden seats.
Delicious food, always well-prepared. Tonight the halibut was grilled perfectly. Their wine selection is varied in style & price point, so there is something for everyone. Our service was attentive but not intrusive- very friendly staff. I have only had good experiences here.
Service was pleasant, but slow. Our server never returned to ask how we were enjoying our meal. Both our entrees were a bit on the cool side: halibut and the cioppino.
The cioppino was was less than spectacular; the singular crab claw was difficult to eat without splashing red broth everywhere. I counted three mussels and three clams in my dish ; the squid was rubbery. Overall, not a great dish, both because it was not served hot and it lacked flavor. Supposedly there was saffron in the broth but it was too subtle for my taste. I think the rockfish in the cioppino was over cooked . Sigh. I was a bit underwhelmed after recently having a fabulous “fish soup” at Bistro 4 in Walla Walla .
Wonderful restaurant! The food and ambiance are delightful. It's a great place to go have a relaxing, excellent meal without feeling you are crammed into a space and having to listen to your neighbor's conversation. Highly recommend!
As good as it gets!!! Quaint, quiet and elegant atmosphere with impeccable service and exceptional dishes . Every item is a culinary masterpiece. Thank you for a lovely dining experience,,,
Cod with potato ravioli was fantastic as was the blood orange old fashioned
the food was lovely. the service was less than acceptable. food was brought out in a very odd sequence. the wait staff made too many assumptions.
Cabezon is one of our favorite restaurants! Great chef, owner and staff
Just a quick dinner. The food was amazing & our server was a total gem!
Amazing experience and we will definitely be back
Very pleased with our first experience. Only thing I would have liked different would have been a free dessert for my wife on her birthday. Server was exceptional. Food was exceptional.
The seafood was fabulous - expertly prepared, lots of flavor and interesting combinations of ingredients. The salad and the prawns appetizer were yummy. The server suggested three of us split the two and that was plenty. Decent wine list and fun cocktails. Will definitely go back again, and maybe even save room for dessert!
Delicious cioppino. We also enjoyed the Caesar salad very much. Great wine, great food, great company.
Our visit was perfect and can't wait to come again. Food was outstanding.
Everything was fabulous! Four of us dined and all loved our food choices. The grouper was the best ever!
Cabezon is an experience that never disappoints. As always, the meal was very, very good, and while we looked around at other's choices, were reminded why we like coming back to this neighborhood spot. (Apparently, this wasn't only our destination, as others seem to show up on a regular basis) Our seafood-based meals were well presented & tasty. The wine pairing fit perfectly...we even left room for dessert!
Cabezon is a quaint Laurelhurst neighborhood spot that we were looking forward to based on the reviews, though I must admit I had not heard of Cabezon prior to searching Open Table. A friend from NYC from long ago was coming to Portland for a local dog show. We hadn't seen each other for 43 years.
The food was OK but a bit disappointing in the flavor department, based on the reviews I had read prior to making the reservation. The food wasn't bad per se, just nothing exciting, the dishes didn't have much flavor - just ho hum - unremarkable but nicely presented. We shared two appetizers: the onion tart and the shrimp/lentil/phyllo concoction. My friend had the fish dinner (cod or sole) and I had the lamb. The lamb had a huge piece of sinew running through it so even though the thin slices were cooked beautifully, it was difficult to separate the meat from sinew, leaving little meat to eat. The first bite I had to spit out (embarrassing!) because I couldn't chew it apart. At that point I began to dissect the meat more carefully. The flavor of the meat was good, the broccolini (or whatever it was) was cooked beyond recognition and the starch accompaniment was bland (it was so uneventful I can't recall what it was!).
If you like food with more subdued flavors and on the bland side, you would like Cabezon. I don't mean this to be negative. I prefer food with more flavor. I did appreciate, however, that the food was not overly salty to compensate for less flavor, like so many poor restaurants tend to do. I don't think I will be back, but many obviously like the palette Cabezon serves.
We both tried the Orange Blossom margarita which was decent. The service was very good; she did not rush us and planned the food arrival appropriately, allowing my friend and I to catch up on the past 43 years. We were not rushed yet she checked in as needed. For that we are appreciative!
Cocktails were delicious delicious delicious. Appetizers were sublime.Entrée exceeded expectations. Dessert oh my the banana ice cream was heaven. This place has pride in ownership and you understand why there are no substitutions; the chef knows their craft. If back in Portland this is return must visit.
Great meal. Service is spot on. Let be this place.
Our fave. We go here all the time highly recommend
What a delightful meal! We were in the Portland area for a long weekend; Cabezon was one several recommendations that we got from locals. This recommendation was spot-on!
Casual vibe, but the food and wines are SERIOUS!
The menu was focused on mostly local seafood. The wine list was moderately priced featuring good California, French, Oregon selections, including a number of 375ml bottles, which was perfect for the two of us to have Sprinkling Wine with Oysters on the half shell and the Warm Beet and Caramelized Onion Tart (No pic available - we killed it before we thought about getting a picture) as starters. We switched to Pinot Blanc (375ml again) with the Halibut and Swordfish Entrees. Both of the entrees were great, but the Swordfish was the best I've ever had!
We also had a lovely Rhubarb Shortcake for dessert.
We highly recommend Cabezon! If you're not from Portland, allow a few extra minute in planning your arrival as the parking is challenging. By the end of the meal, you will have totally forgotten about the parking hassle!
We loved this place. The seafood was fresh, cooked perfectly, and the flavors were phenomenal. We had several drinks between our group, all were delicious. If you love seafood, you should visit.
I love this restaurant! The food is terrific. The staff are friendly and attentive. You must be willing to park about 3 blocks away. But the area is safe to walk to the restaurant.
This was our fourth time at Cabezon. As always, it was a pleasant experience. The menu changes depending on season and availability and although we have our favorites from a previous visit, it has been interesting and tasty to try different items.
We were a table of four --- we introduced our friends to Cabezon. They were delighted. Each of their choices was very well received --- as was my husband's starter and meal.
I would like this to be a 100% favorable revue, but I think it would be best to let you know that my meal --- red snapper with fried artichokes and string potatoes --- could be improved. The fish was fresh and delicious. The sauce was delicious, but the serving could have had a bit more. The fried artichokes were a disappointment. There were a few small desiccated slices that were hard to chew and had no flavor. The take away was --- Why bother.
For dessert I had the rhubarb shortcake. This was a disappointment. The rhubarb had a delicious flavor, but it was not succulent. It was dry and the serving was not generous. It needed some saucy rhubarb with the crunchier bits. "A" for flavor. "D" for overall dish.
Would I recommend and return to Cabezon. You bet. This was the first time I have ever not been completely satisfied with the food. The service and ambiance has always been very nice.
We live in the neighborhood and come here several times year on special occasions. We are planning on dropping by of a late afternoon in between these occasions, sitting at the bar, and indulging in creative drinks and appetizers.
once again Cabezon fails to disappoint, everything is perfect and they also make an epic Manhattan. We had salads and the fish entree's. Our server was awesome, attentive and not over bearing. they even have great bread.
One of my favorite restaurants in Portland.
We dined on Monday night and so it wasn't quite full, and that might be a reason for carrying the conversation easily without a whole lot of noises. But the best part was the seafood, the mussels, the tuna, the cioppino, the bread...on and on; everything was superbly done. Oh, the Whiskey ice cream was very tasty! Our party of four thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.
We had heard wonderful things about Cabezon and I was looking for a seafood restaurant to celebrate my birthday with out of town family. The experience started out positive - we had a reservation and the hostess even asked our preference of two tables. However, the service was incredibly slow. Drink orders took nearly 15 minutes to be received. Generally the services was par to sub-par. But it was the disappointing food. Please know that the menu on their website is not what is “always” available plus daily specials. It’s possible our party dined there on a night with a menu that wasn’t what we were looking for... and I understand that.
I am NOT someone who seeks to write negative (or less than stellar) reviews of restaurants. But I do think this restaurant is a tad overhyped and you need to go in knowing the menu is not what is posted online plus daily additions/specials. Even then, for the quality and service, I would not go back.
Very good meal and great service . Definitely go back here again.
Our first time there, and we'lldefinitely return. Food and service both excellent, and a good value. We really liked the ambience. Nice comfortable, relaxed atmosphere.
Love this place - always!
We came on a Friday night and the place was packed. The noise level almost dissuaded us from staying...but fortunately, we took a chance that it would improve. We are glad we did. We loved the food which was expertly prepared and quite delicious. The drinks were good as well. The waiter was a pro and despite the crowd, managed to provide good service. We will be back though we may choose a weeknight instead..
The service was great (attentive, not obtrusive), the food was incredible, and the pacing was perfect.
Glad to discover this gem!
Wonderful in all ways!
Wine list was very nice and not too "fussy".
We had a couple of fish specials and the cod off the regular menu; and shared a fabulous dessert (profita rolls).
Staff was pleasant and felt right at home.
Wonderful dinner with exceptional quality local ingredients. Service was very good and non-obtrusive. Loved the marlin and my sister really enjoy the steak. And, we share chocolate for dessert! I will definitely be back.
