Ca' Dario Ristorante Ratings and Reviews
We were really looking forward to our dinner at Ca'Dario but were terribly disappointed! We had a reservation but had to wait an hour to get a table. They served us stale bread and when I mentioned it, the waiter brought ice cold sliced store bought bread because they ran out. The waiter recommended a bottle of Chianti and I asked if it was a Classico Reserva. "Of course!" he said but it wasn't. My friend's steak was excellent but my mushy pasta looked and tasted like it was reheated and not fresh. Last year I had the same pasta and it was amazing...such a disappointment. So the Hostess did offer us an appetizer and dessert and the "puffed" pastry was so tough I couldn't cut it with my fork. Ca'Dario was our go to place for special occassions but never again. What happened??????
On a recent visit to Santa Barbara, we walked by this restaurant when it was empty in the morning. It looked very much like the type of small trattoria you see all over Italy -- so we took a look at the menu, which also seemed true to it's Italian heritage. Selections are classics that you'll recognize... no fusion-foods here! Since everything looked right with this place, we took a look at the many dining reviews online... also mostly excellent... so we made a dinner reservation for that same evening. As mentioned elsewhere... make a reservation, or you'll have a long wait. The place was bursting at the seems when we arrived for a 7 PM reso, and we were escorted to the stand-up bar for about a 10 minute wait.
We stayed mainstream on the menu, ordering a couple of dishes the house is known for: RAVIOLI AL BURRO E SALVIA, and TAGLIATELLE VERDI ALLA BOLOGNESE. Both were outstanding! Service was attentive, but not intrusive. Place is small, with small tables pushed close together... so very Euro -- if you like that sort of thing. Price tag for 2 pasta dishes, 2 cocktails and 2 glasses of marginal red wine came to $115, including a 20% gratuity. The overall value for the money spent is good, but not great -- but I've certainly spent more for less at other purportedly fine dining establishments. At the end of the day, it is mostly about the food... which is excellent! We would definitely go back!
We shared the grilled cuttlefish, which was nicely smoky and very tender. I had the osso buco on saffron risotto. Both were prepared perfectly and delicious. My wife had the salmon/pasta dish and was a bit disappointed, as she expected a salmon filet on top of the pasta, but the dish is small pieces of salmon distributed throughout the pasta. The salmon was smoky and delicious. Overall, we had a very pleasant meal.
First time and the food was phenomenal! Must return to try other menu items. For a Sat night, go early and make reservations. Half way through our meal there were many people standing and waiting around the tables. It might be good to get a table in the other room.
Excellent food & authentic feel, Ca Dario is very much a good choice for an evening out. The tables are a bit tightly spaced but the acoustics work out so it is possible to have an intimate conversation despite the proximity to the adjacent tables. The wait staff was a bit pressed due to the volume of patrons through prime-time so the repartee was minimal with the waitress but she was courteous and fine. All in all great food and quality, if perhaps a bit conservative, vibe.
An outstanding Italian restaurant that will do special dishes if they have the ingredients. I asked for a Carbonara and they made it special (not on the menu) and it was outstanding. The Branzino was perfectly prepared, the bread wonderful. If you go early it is quiet, but by 6:30 it gets quite crowded and as such becomes very noisy. Nothing on the menu isn't top notch, their trademark salad with warm beets and goat cheese with candied walnuts is fabulous. The prices are fair, though the corkage fee at $25 is pretty high as is the wine list. Highly recommended, and equally recommended are reservations, they are a must. Most diners come in with reservations in hand.
Our dinner experience was excellent, and one of the guests (from out of town) said that she felt that this was the best dining experience that she had had in Santa Barbara (and we have been to many top rated restaurants) and said that she planned to return when she was next visiting here.
I eat here more frequently than any other place it Santa Barbara, it is that good. Gets a bit loud at night and very crowded, so lunch is my preferred time. Some of the best Italian food in Santa Barbara, and reasonably priced. Change the specials every week and sometimes every day.
I'm a bit torn. I did like the food. Our server was a wonderful gentleman ....but your hostess that evening needs to find other employment. I'm a food sales rep and blogger, very shocked by the tone that she set. I made OpenTable reservations. Treated very aloof. Place was basically empty...without speaking, turns around and to look at staff by the bar and taps the menus with her fingers?!? Is that questionable or impatience ?? Or I don't want to seat them?!? I also listed that this was a special occasion for the water Polo girls. Nothing done ...nothing mentioned. The table next to is received a cake and cans I. Recognition for their occasion. The hostess never spoke to us...enjoy your meal or go to hell. I felt as if I was in TRUMPland. We are Asian Hawaiian...NO PONO felt at your restaurant with the exception of your server.
The appetizer was so good but both my abs my husband's main courses - gluten free pasta with clams/mussels and his breaded swordfish were really bland. I had to our chili flakes to add more flavor. The gluten free meringue dessert was delicious . Service was excellent. Food was hit or miss!
We went here on a referral from a waiter from another restaurant for our 30th wedding anniversary. The food was amazing and the service was impeccable. The place is very small inside and tables are very close together, but we were told that ahead of time. It was OK with us, but if people are looking for a little elbow room, this is not the place for you. We really enjoyed it though and would visit again.
This place was wonderful! Definitely had the vibe of a true Italian eatery with all the hustle and bustle. All of our food was incredible and we felt well taken care of by our servers. I would put this on your list of places to visit while in Santa Barbara!
