c.1880 Ratings and Reviews
I guess we were disappointed after hearing such great reviews. We ordered foie gras which I usually love but this dish had no flavor...the rings from inside of the can were visible. I had scallops which were good and the accompanying rice dish was also pretty good. My husband had lamb that was tough and generally bad.
We did love the banana cream dessert and the rolls!
Excellent service, great food, cozy date night. There was only one other table there the whole night, so we essentially had the place to ourselves, but I hope it was just a fluke due to it being a weeknight. Always love coming here, my groom and I shared a bunch of the small plates, opting out of entrees, and it was paced out very well. Happy to go back any time.
Took my wife there for her 29th birthday. Overall it was a great dining experience. Staff was attentive, courses were served in a timely manner and did not feel rushed. Server knew the menu in amd out and I felt confident choosing their recommendations.
The atmospher was also very nice. Felt warm and inviting.
Most importantly my wife had a great experience too.
Would definitely recommend and go look forward to a return visit.
C.1880 was delicious well paced and surprisingly filling. Generally with tasting menus I am hungry in 2 hours. Not the case here. Big flavors and beautiful presentation topped off by tasty creative desserts made for a lovely evening of gastronomic pleasures. Service was spot on and informative without being pretentious. Would love to comeback and try the menu in every season.
Went out with 4 of us. Great courses and pairings are perfect. I like that there's a little flexibility in the 5 course meal, too. We have been to Ardent in town, which is supposed to be the "best of the best" and it doesn't hold a candle to c1880 in my opinion.
My husband and I very much enjoyed our dinner. We both had the tasting meno with 1\2-glass wine parings. With 5 courses, there was a lot of food that was so tasty, and their Watchamacalit dessert was wonderful. Pricey but well worth the cost. Our waitress was great and helped my husband who prefers beers to wine feel comfortable during the meal.
The food was excellent. The menu doesn't do the food justice. Each dish was well thought out and bursting flavor. I've had more artful dishes but nothing that tasted as delectable as the food at c. 1880. Alanzo, our server, was attentive and knowledgeable. Highly recommended.
Did the 5 course tasting and WOW. One of the most enjoyable eating experiences ever. While I'm sure they are all stellar, ask for the Taylor as your server. Went for a birthday date night and they even left a happy birthday card upon our arrival. Get there before their current soup leaves the seasonal menu!
We were celebrating our 5 year wedding anniversary. We loved the notable wine list and their options in the cellar. The food was exquisite, with each option changing daily. We had the short ribs, gnocchi ratatouille that came in a zucchini boat. The service was excellent, the ambiance lovely!
Truly outstanding food with excellent mixture of flavors in each dish. Appetizer choices are unique and equally flavorful. We were fortunate to be there on a very quiet night, but the service was attentive without being overbearing. The entire dining experience was terrific and we will definitely go back.
My fiance and myself did the tasting menu. Sometimes a little bit adventurous for my personal taste, but very delicious through and through. Great wine, great atmosphere. Little bit steep on the prices, but considering the quality of the food/drink it seems to be about market value(in line with Sanford).
Outstanding as always! Food, wine, and ambiance are always top-notch. Particularly remarkable was our waiter Aaron, who has been with c1880 from day one and it is always a pleasure to see him. He's friendly, knowledgeable, and attentive. He is the perfect "front-line" man for chef Thomas's cuisine and Joshua's meticulous and creative wine pairings. Our favorite restaurant anywhere in the world, and we can't wait to get back!
I have to start out by saying the food was excellent, from craft cocktails to appetizers to entree to dessert. Our server, Alonzo, was great too. Knowledgeable and friendly. With that said, the management is something to be desired. Upon arrival, the host and manager greeted us with less than a smile. Upon meeting our server, he asked if it was a special occasion, which it was - my birthday. While we did order drinks, apps, entree and dessert, there were several lulls between courses, making it seem like the meal was quite drawn out. My husband asked to add an additional protein to his meal, increasing scallops from 4 to 6, with the understanding their would be an upcharge. With that said, we are no strangers to restaurants comparable to this in the area and we are no strange to an upcharge either. This upcharge was $15 for 2 scallops. This was almost 1/2 the charge of the original meal. It seemed excessive. Also considering I just bought 6 scallops at the Public Market (at market price) for $19.00. Upon mentioning this, the server promptly went to his manager and the server came back to say this was market price and that's the way it was. Our server apologized for not letting us know the price at the time of the order. We were quite surprised it wasn't the manager that delivered the message, but sent the server instead. I was also quite surprised that since we were there for a special occasion there was not a complimentary drink or small treat for dessert. I didn't expect it, but have found other restaurants in the area at the same price point have done that in the past.
We loved the food and highly recommend that component, but the response of the management really soured our experience. Bummer because we really would've gone back. There are so many great restaurants in Milwaukee that we will probably choose over this one in the future.
We dined with family visiting from Boston, who are true foodies. c 1880 was the perfect place for a unique and delicious meal. We appreciated the creativity of each dish, as well as the suggested wine pairings. Lovely place, exceptional fine dining without a lot of fuss. Would return again, and again!
This is an outstanding restaurant, and I don't use the word lightly. The food is terrific, an explosion of flavor in the mouth with every bite. Also, the food is very creative. you'll probably taste something you never tasted before. The bar is also creative, with interesting libations that tempt the adventurous.
The appetizers (beets and cauliflower) were particularly great. I had the duck, which was good, and my wife had the pasta dish, which she seemed to like. It was surprisingly quiet/empty, even for a Wednesday at 6:30, so I don't know if I could get a good sense of the typical ambience/noise level.
The ambience and cocktails are amazing! We had the steak tartar that pops with flavor! Service was great! My main dish was not outstanding! I had the mahi mahi and it comes with fava beans and a heavier sauce! I prefer fish to come with a lighter sauce and veggies or rice. Not just beans. I don't feel the fish was super flakey either. Overall, it's a good place, but I have had better.
First consideration in value is overall experience vs. cost. We tried the Chef's Menu. $120.00 per person. For that price, which included a wine pairing, the food should have been over the top for Milwaukee. It was not that, however, some courses were better than others. The Fois Gras was good. The wine pairings were good, however, sparkling wine is a bit of a cheater because it robs one of the beauty of the essence of wine while making one rapidly light headed. The lamb course was great mainly due to the lamb and not the accompaniments; the halibut was good but the husband likes the halibut at home better. The rib course was okay; not great as some other have stated. We still don't know what the "pork collar" is but one of us who had it liked it. The crab was fresh tasting but I prefer crab with a lot of butter; which this was not. If we were to dine again here, I would order an individual serving as opposed to the Chef's menu because overall, this Chef's Menu is way too much food for us. Call me crazy; just cannot eat that much food. I barely touched dessert which was included. For foodies, my question is: " how did Carol rate this Number 3 in Milwaukee????????? I would like to become a food critic so I could try all this food on an expense account. Oh, and another issue: comfort. You will not find that here. Everything is hard surfaces, however, there are cushions on the chairs which have arms that I kept bumping into.
