c.1880 Ratings and Reviews
Excellent food. White bean apple cider soup and Whatchamacalit dessert will be the new standard for other places we at at to beat. A little pricey, but the food quality, preparation, and display reflected it. Great special occasion romantic date place to go!
My wife and I decided to dine at C 1880 after not having been there for a number of years. We found the food to be very good and were pleasantly surprised at the depth of the wine list. My wife had the lamb and I had the trout and both meals were very good. Each meal was prepared superbly and we enjoyed them very much. We found a nice bottle of Soave wine on the wine list that complemented the meals very nicely. Our server was very attentive and was always available whenever we needed her. All in all it was a very nice experience and we will return in the future.
c1880. is a half way point to meet our friends and this was our first time trying this restaurant. We tried the tasting menu which had nice options. We had the wine pairings with each course, also. The food was good. The chef's signature chestnut soup was outstanding. I especially liked the trout and my husband really enjoyed the carnitas and lamb meal. As a whole our group would not do the wine pairings next time. My husband tried their cocktails and said they were good. Our waitress was perfect, her great sense of humor fit in well with our group.
Really exceptional experience overall. We were impressed with the appetizers and wine selection. We both had scallops, which were some of the best we’ve ever had! Loved the decor and ambience. It felt like a beautiful space that someone really cares about and is proud of. The only (tiny) negative I’d say was the random table, space heater and service hutch in the area just outside the restroom. If at all possible, I’d put a screen in front of these, as they really take away from the otherwise beautiful restaurant. We will return, and we will heartily recommend to our friends! It’s great to find a truly upscale yet laid back restaurant in Milwaukee that “gets it” - from service to ingredient quality to lighting and music selection. Well done, c1880!!
The food and service was exceptional, as you would expect. It is the little things that make this a great restaurant. Such as heated cream for your coffee versus cold cream in your hot coffee. A small canapé after dinner. This is what takes a good dining experience and makes it great.
Thomas, Joshua, Aaron and all the c1880 crew always do a great job. We had the 5 course tasting menu with wine pairings, which I HIGHLY recommend! A just perfect balance of flavors , meticulous, beautiful plating , and creative, perfect wine pairings.
By far , the best restaurant I’ve found in Milwaukee (amoung many good choices)— we go back whenever we visit — the service is so good, it’s become more like a reunion of friends
We enjoyed a delicious 5 course meal celebrating NYE 2018 with excellent service! Dining room is always a bit drafty and there was an extended delay between the fish and meat courses. Wine pairings were spot on and we left very satisfied with both service and quality of food!
Tried the chestnut veloute which was deliciously rich could have eaten that alone with the warm brioche roll I had. the veloute was served tableside which was nice, and was poured over a little pile of mushrooms, pate and duck. Never had veloute before, would definitely try again. Also ordered the Steak Tartare which we have never ordered before. The steak was melt in your mouth, it was well seasoned with a nice touch of the pickled egg yolk, it was served with salted rye bread. I do not like rye bread but my husband enjoyed it with the meat. My husband beat me to the punch and ordered had the braised short rib which was served with a variety of roasted vegetables and polenta cakes. The polenta cakes were surprising and initially I thought they were scallops, they were crunchy on the outside yet deliciously tender in the middle. The beef was melt in your mouth delicious. I ordered the trout which although very delicious after tasting the short rib was a bit of a let down. Josh helped us pick out a nice bottle of wine and Aaron our server was very attentive and made some good suggestions. I would definitely recommend c1880 for a date night or special occasion.
We were late for our reservation but I was calling several times to keep them up to date of my arrival. The person was ride over the phone and when we arrived at 8:30 , there was no one in the restaurant, so I did not know why if the restaurant was empty. We also ordered a specific bottle of wine and the server brought us the wrong bottle after he opened it. Milwaukee needs an upgrade
Dinner was amazing! My wife and I shared three appetizers which included the Chestnut Velote, Fois Gras abc Steak Tartar. They were each fantastic. For dinner I had the duck and she had the scallops. Again, both were delicious. We were too stuffed to have dessert aside for a wondering cup of coffee.
The setting was pleasant and so was the background jazz music.
Last, but certainly not least, was the service. Very friendly and attentive.
Looking forward to going back!
Our experience at c.1880 was special, especially because of our patient, friendly server, Taylor. The menu is unique, with specialty items that Taylor described thoroughly. She guided us through our selections, including wine pairings. The food was beautifully presented and tasted amazing! This is an award-winning restaurant, considered one of the top restaurants in Milwaukee. It is easy to see why. We enjoyed the halibut, lamb, and pork chop dinners, (pictured). We were there because we received a gift certificate... prices are reflective of the top awards received. Great place for a special occasion dinner.
I guess we were disappointed after hearing such great reviews. We ordered foie gras which I usually love but this dish had no flavor...the rings from inside of the can were visible. I had scallops which were good and the accompanying rice dish was also pretty good. My husband had lamb that was tough and generally bad.
We did love the banana cream dessert and the rolls!
Excellent service, great food, cozy date night. There was only one other table there the whole night, so we essentially had the place to ourselves, but I hope it was just a fluke due to it being a weeknight. Always love coming here, my groom and I shared a bunch of the small plates, opting out of entrees, and it was paced out very well. Happy to go back any time.
Took my wife there for her 29th birthday. Overall it was a great dining experience. Staff was attentive, courses were served in a timely manner and did not feel rushed. Server knew the menu in amd out and I felt confident choosing their recommendations.
The atmospher was also very nice. Felt warm and inviting.
Most importantly my wife had a great experience too.
Would definitely recommend and go look forward to a return visit.
C.1880 was delicious well paced and surprisingly filling. Generally with tasting menus I am hungry in 2 hours. Not the case here. Big flavors and beautiful presentation topped off by tasty creative desserts made for a lovely evening of gastronomic pleasures. Service was spot on and informative without being pretentious. Would love to comeback and try the menu in every season.
Went out with 4 of us. Great courses and pairings are perfect. I like that there's a little flexibility in the 5 course meal, too. We have been to Ardent in town, which is supposed to be the "best of the best" and it doesn't hold a candle to c1880 in my opinion.
My husband and I very much enjoyed our dinner. We both had the tasting meno with 1\2-glass wine parings. With 5 courses, there was a lot of food that was so tasty, and their Watchamacalit dessert was wonderful. Pricey but well worth the cost. Our waitress was great and helped my husband who prefers beers to wine feel comfortable during the meal.
The food was excellent. The menu doesn't do the food justice. Each dish was well thought out and bursting flavor. I've had more artful dishes but nothing that tasted as delectable as the food at c. 1880. Alanzo, our server, was attentive and knowledgeable. Highly recommended.
Did the 5 course tasting and WOW. One of the most enjoyable eating experiences ever. While I'm sure they are all stellar, ask for the Taylor as your server. Went for a birthday date night and they even left a happy birthday card upon our arrival. Get there before their current soup leaves the seasonal menu!
We were celebrating our 5 year wedding anniversary. We loved the notable wine list and their options in the cellar. The food was exquisite, with each option changing daily. We had the short ribs, gnocchi ratatouille that came in a zucchini boat. The service was excellent, the ambiance lovely!
