Byrd and Baldwin Bros. Steakhouse Ratings and Reviews
I want to like this restaurant because I know that there must be something outstanding about it, based on other reviews, but my our experience was not so good.
Nobody came to out table for over 10 minutes after we were seated. The waiter, Alex, was awesome by the way. We don't fault him for not coming by sooner. But I did have to ask for service.
Beef tartar was outstanding, but that was the only notable dish. We ordered 3 courses and were not impressed.
It was our wedding anniversary night and neither the food nor the restaurant made it special or worth the almost $200 that I spent.
I have been to this restaurant several times for birthdays and anniversaries. Always top notch from the food to the service and the ambience. One of my favorite steak houses. It was my best friends birthday and her first time there. She loved it. Thank you Byrd and Baldwin for a wonderful evening
Always a pleasure. I can’t think there is another establishment in Norfolk that provides this level of quality service. We usually dine here three or four times a year, whenever we make the ninety minute drive to Chrysler Hall for a performance. Definitely one of the very best Hampton Roads has to offer.
Went for my husband's birthday this week. Delicious appetizers, strong but delicious Moscow Mule, both of our steaks were cooked to perfection, and the Brie mac & cheese was AMAZING!! creme brûlée to finish out the meal was delicious!! I highly recommend for a special occasion (although everyone else was there for either a regular weeknight meal or dinner with colleagues) so it works any day of the week!
Attended with another couple for a get together. Great food and even better service. This is on the upper end of the cost, but well worth it for any special occasion or when looking for a first class restaurant. Do not be put off by the title of "Steakhouse." While there are many excellent beef dishes, there are also plenty of other offerings including vegetarian. Clearly one of the top five restaurants in Norfolk!
Very disappointed. Byrd and Baldwin Brothers has been my go-to place in Norfolk for excellent steak. Saturday evening, I had the 8-ounce filet. It was surprisingly tough. All else was fine, but the steak let me down big time.
Elegant old style service - so often missing in high end restaurants. The decor is classic and dark. The wait staff are well trained, from the hot towels through to the crumb cleaner, it’s a pleasant relief in dining experiences to be treated well while dining.
The steaks are fantastic!
Drinks could be colder and were a little lackluster. Wine service was exceptional. Service was a bit rushed - could delay between courses a bit for digestion and conversation.
The sides were very salty. We had garlic spinach and steamed broccoli. Lemon hollandaise was exquisite- creamy, bright, warm. Mmmm
A definite repeat for us. Valet parking makes it easy. But the six dollar fee seems pedantic to park when you’re dropping $500+ on a dinner.
You walk into this beautiful building and immediately greeted warmly by the hostess. She took us to our table and was very friendly. Ladi our server was menu knowledgeable and on the spot every step of the way. The food was amazing, the steaks were prepared to perfection. The presentation of the food was outstanding. The sides were definitely large enough for 2 or more. Thank you for a wonderful evening.
Was very disappointed. Bar downstairs was far better in service than the restaurant. Our waiter was not attentive, service slow, and food not anything notable. My filet mignon was ordered rare since pittsburgh blue was not recommended since chef could "over-cook with the char". Well, my rare steak was not rare so apparently the chef cannot cook a steak . Will NOT be returning.
This was quite the dining experience. Everything from the food to the service to the atmosphere was outstanding. Our waitor was patient with us and answered all of our questions about the dishes. The dining area was dimly lit to set a peaceful and romantic mood and the music playing in the background was just the right style to match. This is the perfect place for a very special night out. The bill was expensive, but for a one-time thing, the experience was more than worth it.
We felt that our dinners were the best we have ever had. The service was wonderful, the atmosphere was perfect, and we cannot wait to eat there again! Everyone on the staff was very helpful and friendly. The servings were generous, and the cocktails were excellent. The desert they gave us because we were celebrating a birthday was very tasty, but we ordered another desert as well (we both have sweet teeth). We had two spectacular desserts!
The food was absolutely amazing!! Everything came out perfect and cooked to order with no issues!! Our server Alex was phenomenal!! His knowledge of the menu his recommendation of which wine to chose and our desert was spot on!! My wife and I often eat at fine dining restaurants around the Hampton Roads area and this is definitely a top choice for the food service and ambiance!! This was our first trip but definitely will not be our last!! Thank you for making our 4th Anniversary great for us!!
Fairly disappointing for a 33rd anniversary dinner and the overall cost. We were seated at the top of the entrance stairs where I got to meet everyone's stare as they walked up the stairs. The table also provided a disappointing view out of their front window where I could look directly into the alley across the street and watch the kitchen staff of another restaurant come into the alley to smoke, spit and hang out with their friends. Service started off fairly good although the waiter was a bit too quiet and difficult to hear. Once he was assigned a larger party the service tanked. From the time we finished our dinners until we were asked about dessert was about 10-12 minutes. It was another 20-25 minutes before we received the dessert. We didn't see our waiter again until we had paid our bill and he had sensed our displeasure and tried to compensate for the poor service. All in all...a fairly poor experience for what equated to a $230 dinner. Won't be back...
This place is great. The interior is very fancy, as are the waiters in their suits. The food came out in a timely manner and was cooked just as we asked.
We ordered the tomahawk ribeye, corn, and mashed potatoes. The steak was perfectly medium-rare, the corn was just buttery enough and the potatoes were smooth with the right amount of garlic in them.
This place is by no means cheap, but they do have a 2 course dinner for $40. You could both get a dinner and split the 1st course and dessert for a 3 course meal. Or you could just share the $40 dinner since you get a whole 12oz steak anyway. We got the 30 oz tomahawk since we were feeling rich. Having said that, we did end up taking half of it home for breakfast, which between the two of us was 4 servings total.
I will definitely return for another special night out.
We went for my husband's birthday and when we arrived there was a signed Happy Birthday paper on the table (signed by all the staff). They also gave us a free desert. The wine list was extensive and fantastic. At one point, the chefs had made a bacon onion jam on a cracker. It was incredible and given to all the people in the restaurant. Many people were there on dates and a few on business. It is a very romantic place with exquisite dining.
My husband made a reservation for my birthday. It was great. I really enjoyed everything. We will certainly dine here in the future. My favorite was the Spinach Salad and the Airline Chicken Breast. It was delicious and my husband's steak was phenomenal. 5 stars!
The drinks started us off in a good mood, and our waiter was actually quite personable. The appetizer shrimp cocktail was divine. I had a ribeye and my wife had filet mignon with crab/asparagus/bernaise. Both steaks were cooked perfectly and seasoned quite well. I wish I'd left room for dessert.
Never disappoints. We are regulars and find B&B to be the right place for a special dinner. This evening the four of us went with the specials, three were outstanding while one, the veal chop, was to fatty but still tasty. Really nothing to complain about just not up to the usual standards. Other steaks were cooked to perfection and cut with a fork. Lobster was perfectly cooked and taken off the shell at the table. Jason our server was excellent, attentive but not overpowering. We will be back.
