We arrived w/put a reservation but was seated quickly. Excellent house selected red wine. Roasted cauliflower appetizer was crispy though a bit to vinegary from capers. Our special pizza was delish thought very charred.

By Word of Mouth ("BYOM") always delivers good food. Service is cheerful and friendly. The Tuna Katsu small plate is good. The portabella cauliflower wasabi dish is excellent (this from someone who does not ordinarily like cauliflower). The noise level can be a serious impediment to dinner conversation, so we go early. They are always willing to turn down the background music, if requested. Their wine specials on the chalkboard are always interesting to try.

We had several meals at WOM when they opened many years ago and it was excellent. Everything about the recent meal was disappointing. Food so so and not up to the price. Service was good, friendly, however our salads we brought 45 seconds before our meal. We did not eat the salad, yet were still charged for them. In addition, my salmon came on a "bed of lettuce" which turned out to be a monster salad the same as the house salad. Would have expected the wait staff to point that out and suggest I not order the salad.They used to have an excellent selection of wine. Not so much now. We won't be going back. The reputation with Big Sky locals matches our experience. Very sad when a place who once was great, plunges to disappointment.

The lack of ambiance keeps this from qualifying as fine dining. It's too bad they don't have the whole package, but well worth a visit for the food and service. Basil shrimp is stellar, good trout and tuna; warm kale salad is too oily, but flavorful and interesting. No good champagne choices, some good wines, a variety of beers. The outside of the building is nondescript, and there's no good signage (up the street from the firehouse).

Overall the food was just OK with weird Chines twists and sometimes way too much salt, like for the squid linguine. The pinot noir wine we got for $34 was pretty bad. This place is overpriced by 30% at least.

We had a reservation--promptly seated but did not get served food until an hour later--there was a large table that had put in their orders just before us. I got The asian noodle dish with smoked tofu--it was incredibly salty--I really couldn't eat much of it--it was really frustrating because I was quite hungry after waiting so long for the food--the server was courteous, he kept bringing us a bit of bread to tie us over. My husband enjoyed his panini w smoked tofu and French onion soup.

Don't be deterred by the outside and the canvas sign, they are putting money into great food and comfortable , casual and excellent cuisine. We enjoyed 2 tasty dinners during our 8 day stay

After an hour, I asked where our appetizers were. They had forgotten to put them in. Then another 35 minutes before our dinner came. A salad, panini, and shrimp. Not a difficult order. The shrimp was $26 for 4 small shrimp. We will not be going back.

The food is always delicious, the cocktails are interesting and delicious. They dont care if you want things a little different than on the menu, very accomodating. Our waiter was really friendly. There is a nice low key vibe here. On this particular night there was a large loud group with 7 kids and another table with two girls who were bunny- hopping through the restaurant and ended up breakung glassware. Once those two tables cleared out we had a lovely adult meal.

Outward appearance a turn off. We Almost left. But once inside, good service, great menu and fantastic food make ByWOM a good dining experience. Outward appearance and lack of a scenic view from any window are the weakness of this restaurant. Lamb shank large and delicious. Trout melts in your mouth. Soba noodles with meatballs a delicious option too. Tuesday's offering include a variety of sushi dishes. This is a gem in a bad location.

This was my second visit to By Word of Mouth, with the first being in February. Had a good steak the first time around (and I am picky about getting a steak out, because a majority of restaurants do not cook steak well). This time around I had a late lunch, so I was not looking for a heavy dinner, and got a simple Chicken Caesar Salad. It was well dressed and the chicken was outstanding. It was well grilled with a bit of character to it, compared to the wimpy chicken that you so often find. My wife had a lamb burger that was on point, and we would highly recommend. Also had a nice Pinot Noir to cap it off. I'll be back.

Great menu, lots of variety. We had the Tuna Kudzu (not sure of spelling) app. which was excellent and enough for 4. I had the Sobu noodles with pork meatballs. It was very good, great sauce, crispy vegs., noodles a bit overcooked. The pork osso buco and shrimp with risotto were both excellent. 3 of us shared a molten chocolate cake with homemade coffee ice cream, wow! Wine list was good and reasonable. Service was attentive but not too.

Our party of seven found the food mostly excellent. The menu has a good diversity for meat eaters as well as vegetarians, all with a local Montana flare. We loved the rainbow trout, portabella plate, locally grown burgers, tofu, and specials, as well as the fixings with the main entrees. (Lemon quinoa with wasabi roasted cauliflower purée = yum.) I don't understand some of the negative reviews about the food and serving sizes elsewhere. We come from from Boston, NYC, Philadelphia, Rhode Island and Sweden ( that is, some of us are pretty picky) and we really enjoyed our meals. Our one complaint was the noise level. We came here for our last night in Big Sky to celebrate the end of our vacation and found it difficult to hear each other over the din from the other dinners and the adjacent bar.

a great wait staff and service. The menu has a lovely variety - something for everyone. They have a great soba tofu noodle dish for the Vegans, a wonderful array of fish - trout, ahi tuna - are always a great hit. Great starters - spicy tuna roll and endgames are a family favorite.

By Word of Mouth is a small restaurant tucked away in the town center off of Big Sky access road. The lighting is a bit dim and the atmosphere is very casual here. We found the food excellent and our server, outstanding. We had the Idaho trout and the homemade spinach basil pasta. Wine list was good. Would highly recommend trying this restaurant. Noise level was pretty high, so not somewhere to go if you are looking for a quiet, intimate dinner.

We had a reservation for 7 pm but were tired and hungry so we got in at 5:00. We beat the Valentines Day "crowd". It was quiet when we were there. As we were finishing up, more people were coming in. Tuna Tataki was outstanding, Rosemary wings were okay, our girls enjoyed the Yaki Soba, my husband enjoyed the flank steak and i loved the Spicy basil Shrimp!

We were graciously welcomed and seated immediately. Our waiter was table side for questions quickly and we were able to make our choices after a few questions were answered. The food was served in a timely manner and it was superb with perfect portion size. The gooey chocolate concoction a la mode was delicious! The dining room's noise level was quite high even all tables were not occupied.

We decided to give the restaurant a 2nd chance. This time around service was friendly, helpful, and attentive. The menu variety is good. Food well prepared and well presented. I had the steak special and it was done just right. Wine list and cocktail list are good with nice variety and an international selection of wines. We ate here in January, 2014 and felt ignored by our server as our service was exceptionally slow.

This was a great find in an unlikely spot. One would not expect to find this culinary level in Big Sky next to a pizza joint in a strip. This was high end eating without the high end prices or stuffiness. Loved the calamari appetizer made with rice flour (it's been so long!), shrimp and risotto,salad with seared tuna, spinach pappardelle,lamb burger. Good drinks menu, too. Casual atmosphere...the kitchen is paying attention to what people like to eat which is NOT always bison, venison or elk ( seemingly the protein staples of Montana.

Our party of four dined at BWOM the other night - Wow is the best we could say. Casual, friendly welcome and service started our evening, but the highlight is the food. Our party - from Philly snd Seattle - have eaten at some good places, but the trout several of our group had was the best ever anywhere. The Ahi Tuna was also great, as were the desserts. As we have a place in Big Sky, we will be back!

We heard this was an excellent restaurant, so we wanted to try it. When we first arrived, it was so warm, that we asked to be moved to the bar area where it was a little cooler. It could be because the windows were closed due to the rain. Two of us ordered the Pork Osso Buco, (pork shank), one of whom loved it and the other who found it way too much work to eat. The other two ordered the Caesar Salad, which we both thought was mediocre with a lot of greens and not a whole lot else. I personally would be willing to try it again as it has so many good reviews that I'd like to try something else. Julie, our waitress, was lovely and very accommodating.

The SPINACH PAPPARDELLE was house made and hand cut tossed with matchstick vegetables, portabella mushrooms and tomatoes and finished with Marsala cream, parmesan & fresh basil oil and it was out of this world. I asked if the chef could add shrimp which he did without hesitation. It was truly amazing. The lava cake with homemade coffee ice cream was excellent. It was hard to believe the place was empty--the food was fantastic and the service was great. This place is a MUST!!!
