This restaurant is a little bit noisy and the tables are too close together. The waiter was very friendly, but knew nothing about the wine. The fish special came with the head on without warning which kind of threw my daughter off. It was not great for the value there were probably about four bytes of actual fish on the plate.
The lamb kebab with slightly tough on the portion of salad was quite small. Overall not a fabulous dining experience.
Casual. Popular with locals. Great value. Healthy. Relaxed.
A great pre-theatre dinner. The restaurant is small but the menu offers numerous tasty offerings. The service was very friendly.
We loved everything about this cafe. The Middle Eastern food choices were delicious and the servings were generous and well presented. The service was great. It is a small cafe and was full the evening we were there. Reservations recommended.
The atmosphere was welcoming and inviting. The food was incredible, fresh and hot and seasoned well and the plating was beautiful. We enjoyed many apps and all of us had different entres, everyone at the table was raving about the food. Super happy we chose this place. The service was great and the waitress was very friendly. I would totally recommend By The Way Café. The
Been going to By the Way for years and this was the first time the food was just ok. The weather was dreadful and people with reservations, myself included, came very late. Always the best place for dinner in the area, even when it's not up to par.
The staff greeted us with a warm welcome. The fare was delicious and Mediterranean healthy too. Perfect for the January "cleanse". The waiter accommodated diet restrictions graciously. Love the warm pitas and the hummus reminded me of Turkey. We should consider going there more often.
I found that the portions were meagre and the food was mediocre
I'm a regular. Lovely staff, a nice ambiance and excellent food make By the Way Café just right for a quiet dinner with a good friend or special someone. The menu is fresh, tasty and healthy.
A decent casual place if one is in the area. Patio was pleasant in spite of busy Bloor St. Management should make the effort to see that hot food is served hot (not tepid).
Very good food
Sevice quick enough to let us go to the theatre after
Met here with four friends pre-concert for dinner and drinks. Fantastic.
Great food and a amazing place
The food was very good and presented beautifully!!
A Lovey patio, when the weather is good and great service!
I haven't been to BTWCafe in years but it is as good as it always was. A great little casual eatery in the Annex. Menu is a little more limited than I remember but the middle eastern focused menu is excellent. I will go back more often.
Great food with a bit of creativity, relaxed, cool atmosphere. Above average warm knowledgeable service
Most patrons were in a rush to get to a concert. We were served promptly and well and were able to leave by the deadline we gave our server, after a delicious dinner. It was a pleasant experience.
We came with some friends (group of 4) for dinner. The service was great, the food came quickly, and the food was really good.
Although not a "destination" restaurant, this is quite a viable option for eating in this neighborhood, perhaps before a flick at the Hot Docs or a show at the Randolph Theatre, as we did. The restaurant is comfortable and we had a good meal.
wonderful area of town great people watching while relaxing in restaurant enjoying good food , down to earth prices, friendly service
Enjoyed a pre-theatre dinner mid-week. Big portions for everything we ordered. Soups were yummy, as was shared appetizer of brie with apples & pita bread. Burgers available in bun or wrap -- good size & lots of toppings available.
I wouldn't go there again. I had the worst kebob. It tasted like nothing. I had no idea what it was.
nice to sit outside. accomodate special dietary restrictions.
I had a great time at By the Way on a sunny Monday afternoon. Place was not busy for dinner and the food was very tasty. Would definitely recommend.
Convenient location for Tranzac Club or Bloor Hot Docs. Very good middle eastern food, very friendly patrons, nice wines by the glass and excellent service. Will definitely go back whenever I'm in the area for a show.
Yummy food and a cozy atmosphere. Quick srevice pre show. Consistent food over many years, I would recommend it without reservation, no pun intended. It is very hard to get a restaurant where you can safely it out if you have any food issues, and this is one. Even my husband liked the food, in fact love the food, and he is a real traditional eater.
Good attentive service throughout. Food was very good and well displayed. Enjoyed our time there, at a patio table, watching the crowds pass by.
Great Middle eastern food. Enjoyed the cook on the meat. Wished the menu was more elaborate, particularly with the grill meat options during dinner time. However, quality was high.
This neighbourhood restaurant maintains its well-earned reputation with a limited menu and an excellent list of daily specials, all of which BTW regulars know they can count on. A friendly oasis in the heart of Bloor Street traffic, it consistently holds its own with splendid no-fuss dining and a wait staff who seem to appreciate the customers as much as we appreciate them -- another reason why we keep coming back for more.
Not impressed. The food was mediocre as was the service. Not kid-friendly at all.
We won't be going back.
Can't understand why this place has been around so long; it's nothing to write home about.
The service was good overall. However, all 3 of our party ordered the lamb kebabs with rice. I specifically was hoping to eat rice (for dietary reasons). The server brought us all lamb and POTATOES (no advance notice). When I questioned why there was no rice, the server said "Sorry, we ran out of rice." How can a restaurant run out of rice? They are on Bloor Street, for heaven's sake. There are grocery stores everywhere. It was inexcusable not to have rice, AND not to tell us that at the time of ordering or before bringing us the meals.
I've been coming to By The Way Cafe for four years now and every time I am truly satisfied. The staff are friendly, the food is simple, middle eastern comfort food with punches of well placed flavour and great specials that display the kitchen's creativity. The wine list is thoughtfully chosen with selections that match the cuisine very well. The best part I have to say is the view. Some of the best people watching can be done at this sweet and neighborly corner of Brunswick and Bloor. Top it all of with a Patio graced by an ancient tree = bliss. By the way, the desserts are lovely ;)
We chose this restaurant because of proximity to a concert venue and it has reasonably good ratings in a few websites. We were extemely pleased. The middle eastern Mezes were delicious and generous portions. A good selection of wines by the glass at reasonable prices. The mains were all excellent and nivcely presented. The waiter was very professional and attentive without being intrusive or pushy. We do not get to the Annex very often but if we go again we will certainly be back to By the Way Cafe.
This has been an early favorite of mine, in the Annex on bloor its a tiny spot with a big covered patio. The bagels are to die for, my husband doesn't leave without ordering to.
The freshness of the food and smiles on the staff make it our go to spot when we head downtown.
The ambience and service are lovely, But the lamb on the kebobs was very dry.
Had not been here for a few years, but previously always had a good experience. We had the appetizer plate - which we indicated we were going to share. One of us got a side plate with a small warm Pita, the other nothing, and we had to ask for another plate and Pita. The Israeli Salad was the best thing on the plate, nice and fresh tasting. The Spicy and Crunchy Calamari were rubbery and the Warm Tuna Nicoise was indifferent, and I left some of it. Somewhat of a disappointment, alas.
This was an after show Sunday gathering of friends and family ... it was certainly affordable and the food was consistently great - from hamburgers to lamb kabobs to soup salad and the always favourite of mine Mediterranean plate. Others who had not been there before and loved it!
It has been an Annex institution for years and as one knows nothing foodie lasts in the Annex unless it is good!
By the Way Cafe is a kind of haven from loud crowded Bloor/Annex area, with reliably good food that is not uber-trendy or uber-pricey. Altogether comfortable. On cold evenings, the draft from the corner door can prove chilly -- have a sweater or jacket handy. Service is attentive and friendly, though when the place fills up, the service might be hard keeping up with everyone, so give yourself time to relax over food. It's not our neighbourhood, but it has that kind of feeling, so with its vegetarian-friendly good food, I'll keep returning, Also handy to concerts at nearby Trinity St. Pauls.
Interesting menu, good food, excellent value for money.
It was really packed and uncomfortable in there but the food was really good!
