I have being dining out in the city for 34 years and this was the worst. Rye Manhattan on the rocks tasted like a glass of bitters, didn’t have the bottle of wine we order, waiter placed the wrong order and he was rude, waiter never brought 2nd glass of wine to my wife and he was no where to be found. My steak was 80% fat and had jellyfish texture. Not bad for $38. Menu was blah and made no sense. Horrible!

The atmosphere and service were excellent. The Smoked Pork Chop is fantastic and the Long Island Bass was cooked perfect. It was our first time visiting Butter and my family enjoyed it .

Pork entree that was received was so salty that it was ineidible. Then had to wait 25 minutes for a replacement, by that time my wife’s food was cold as she wanted to wait to eat with me. Total waste of $250. Had high hopes and expectations for Alex’s restaurant. Not to mention the back area needs some renovating, it’s a little run down/old.

My friend and I came here for her birthday, and we're not that impressed.
Food/drink wise: the Brussels sprout salad (I liked the raw ones in there; the freshness paired nicely with the apples and roasted ones), beignets (delicious) and purple drink (hibiscus is always nice) were very good. The other food and everything else was good.
The service: I had relayed three times that is was my friend's birthday: the "occasion" tab, the special requests and to our server. It was forgotten about. In defense, our first waiter was good. I reminded him on the side that it was my friend's brithday. He said that when the dessert comes out they will put on a candle and bring two glasses of prosecco on the house. Our server said nothing to us before leaving. We believe his shift ended and the new server knew nothing of it being my friend's brithday. I had to ask, the bartender, not our server, after the dessert was brought out with no candle for it to be brought back with a candle. I also mentioned that we were told we would be receiving two glasses of prosecco (on the house). Those came, however they were charged on my bill. Finally, when we wanted to leave we were forgotten about. I had to waive down a busser to ask for the check. We then had to wait 15 minutes (when it was not even that busy) for the bill to be picked up. I again had to waive down (a different busser) to get our server's attention.
All in all, we were fulfilled by the food (and those beignets were heavenly), but very dissatisfied with the service/management.

This was our fourth visit to Butter. Each time we experience outstanding service and delicious food. This occasion we selected two of the evening specials that continued to reveal the same outstanding quality for food.

Arrived for our reservation on time at 11:45 for lunch. We were served water as requested. Placed our order and after 1 hour, it didn't come. We were told the inspectors were in the kitchen. When we looked around, no one had been served meals. Not sure why they didn't tell us that the kitchen was closed and that they weren't serving. How do you ignore customers like that? Very disappointing experience.

OMG this is seriously the MOST AMAZING food we have ever had! Even my boyfriend who is usu more critical said it was the BEST meal he ever ate!!! We had the Brussel Sprout salad to start we split it and it was an original - plated expertly on a very chic plate made with delicate ingredients like thinly slices tart apple and black radishes atop thinly shaved Brussel sprouts dressed lightly with a pecan dressing. It was like nothing we ever tasted. Then my boy friend had sea bass an barley and it was perfection - bass seasoned perfectly, crunchy on the outside, buttery on the inside atop a bed of barley with a creamy flavorful sauce. I had a “Cauliflower Cloud” - a grilled cauliflower steak topped with evenly chopped cubes of carrot and parsnip (I think) with a lovely coconut milk sauce so different it will knock your socks off! We can’t wait to go back and try something else...💕

Great place for a business lunch. They have a number of booths that are set to seat 2 at lunchtime, which made meeting for lunch pleasurable, and we appreciated being able to have a converstation that was not overwhelmed by loud music or minimized by encrouching diners seated too near. We were not rushed. Much appreciated that.

Fabulous New York restaurant owned by one of the great iron chefs. We had a wonderful meal service was impeccable. The ambience of this restaurant is nothing short of executed to the finest of details. This was our first and will be many more visits. The selection of appetizers as well main courses were excellent! We frequent the finest restaurants in New York and this is in the top 10!

First off, probably the best brunch I've ever had. I've been wanting to go to Ms Guarnaschelli's restaurant for ages. The salad, gnocchi mac 'n cheese , the straw potato cakes were wonderful. The hanger steak was just divine: perfectly cooked and flavorful; having said that, I thought it was overly seasoned. However, I could have eaten that steak till the cows came home. The gnocchi melted in your mouth... literally. Heaven. The shrimp (and grits) was perfection: beautifully cooked. However, I wasn't prepared for the heat. Maybe, just maybe, a little too hot. As fort the homemade marmalade, well I want to buried in that one! The eggs were the silkiest, creamiest I've ever eaten. Just simply delicious.
Here's what disappointed me a little: I did not see any bread (although two wonderful butters were offered) and I missed that with the marmalade (I ate in anyway, one delicious tablespoon after another ).
Also, not all dishes came out at the same time. The shrimps and grits, the hanger steak and the eggs were all put out, I would say, about thirty minutes in. Feeling already a little full, I could not take full advantage of all that was offered. I believe that's the first time I've gone to brunch and not everything was available from the beginning. However, the coffee was strong and much appreciated as was the service.
In closing, I felt the lighting too dark for a brunch - is there no way to up the lighting somehow for that meal? As well, I expected a more sophisticated soundtrack. Sunday morning, in upscale Midtown, maybe some baroque?
Having said all this, the plusses and minuses, it was a truly memorable experience with food I had been waiting to experience for a long while. Ms Guarneschelli, my favorite of all the celebrity chefs, it was an honour.

We waited more than 30 minutes after our reservation time to be seated and walked back to a nearly half-empty dining room. The hostess was wearing mud-caked sneakers, which didn't help the vibe. Our waiter (who was very sweet) took over five minutes to come to our table or bring us water. The food was good (we loved the octopus and the pork chop, liked the Caesar salad) and the watermelon cocktail was delicious, but the experience wasn't mind-blowing. We wished there was a bartender at the apparently for-show-only front bar because we would each have had at least one drink each while we waited, and the hostesses didn't tell us there was a back bar where we also could have waited.

We've been to Butter many times, and the experience is always the same--delicious food, terrible service. There are probably restaurants out there with comparable food, and much better service, but for some reason we keep going back. I really don't understand why in all the times we've been, we've only had one good server.

Another issue--the menu is small, and they often run out of things. We went after the holidays last year, and we were told they were out of the only vegetarian entree(my mother and I are both vegetarians, so we were only able to order appetizers and sides). Then my dad ordered a drink and they were out of the garnish. Is it really that hard to send someone to the store for some ingredients?

This week, my husband tried to order the lobster special, and they said they were out of it. Keep in mind, this was before 7 pm on a Saturday.

When we arrived it was 4:50 and we waited till 5:10 to be seated because they were not open yet. Once we were seated our server Jordan was terrific, not only eas the service great but the food was also great. I had red snapper and i would say it was the best I've had. The chef has his crisping perfect, the skin on the snapper and the skin on my wifes chicken was crisp and tasty. Great meal, we will be back.

We had the most delicious meal there. The gnocchi was out of this world along with the salmon and my husband's pork chops. The bread was flaky and the best I've ever had. Top it off with the raspberry beignet and your meal is complete. Definitely will go back if we visit New York city again.

My experience at Butter was different than what I had expected. I was surprised to see that the dining was a lot more casual than I had anticipated. The food itself was outstanding but our service was poor to say the least. Our waiter payed little to no attention to us and came off as rude and snobby. The restaurant was beautifully decorated but the ambiance was inconsistent with dim lighting and candles on the table but pop music playing over the speakers. Overall the experience was a good one besides the service. I would easily give this place another try.

We arrived at 9:40pm on a Friday, the nicely appointed dining room was about 1/3 full. Our very sweet first waitress was let go for the night, the second waiter was not helpful nor attentive, he would not put in our appetizer order until we ordered the entree. We asked for additional wine with our meal that arrived after finishing our entree course. Our waiter seemed to be passive-aggressive, going more slowly as the meal continued, and we tried hard to be nice to him. The food however was excellent.

Dinner with my partner on a Friday night during a weekend trip to NYC. We had wanted to try Alex's restaurant for a while now, so made a reservation for the early evening. We got there before it was too busy. Service was attentive (not too attentive) and friendly - and helped me decide between fish dishes. We shared the gnocchi mac & cheese appetizer (OMG - yum!), I had the swordfish special, my partner had the roasted chicken, and we shared the zucchini side. Both of our entrees were a large portion - and both cooked perfectly. Although already stuffed, we shared the raspberry beignets for dessert and we glad we did - the were perfect! Only quibble at all is that dinner was a little pricy (the above plus one soda and one beer was $200 including tip) - but its probably in line with a good restaurant in midtown. We were seated in a darker area of the restaurant and my partner couldn't read the menu without the candle - but that was luck of the draw - some tables had better lighting than others. On the plus side, all types of seating available - tables, booths, and high-tables near the bar - works out great for diners of all sizes.

The food was outstanding! I had the gnocchi and my hubby had the salmon. Both were yummy! It's a little mystery getting into the restaurant as you go down the stairs, basement level, to enter. Once there, the ambiance captures you. Soft, gorgeous lighting. Our server was very attentive. It's a sure thing to eat at this restaurant and it's walking distance to all the theaters on Broadway. Good find! I'd go again in a heartbeat.

The food was absolutely terrible. The fish tacos had absolutely no flavor, the calamari breading was flavorless as well and over fried and the shrimp Caesar salad was gritty. Completely horrible. The only thing that made this birthday lunch worthwhile was the server bringing a champagne toast for me.
