At first glance, Butchertown Grocery may seem like a conundrum. On the outside, a decidedly simple, 19th-century brick building. On the inside, a sleek restaurant with cozy banquettes, marble tables, mosaic tile on the floor and weathered exposed wood on the ceiling.

You could say the contrast is a lot like our neighborhood: a little raw, a little refined, and with plenty of heart.

Making honest, simple food is what gets us out of bed every morning. We use the best ingredients because we care about where our food comes from. Every dish is inspired by the heritage of hard work and craftsmanship on which our community was built.

Great food, great service, nice ambiance, fun cocktails. This was a good choice for a birthday dinner. They brought out beignets with a candle after we mentioned a member of our party was having a birthday..prices are somewhat higher, but quality warrants it. Best gnocchi I've ever had. I recommend the brussel sprouts shared dish and the rotisserie chicken too.

Great ambience and service for brunch. Interesting menu. Waffle was not really hot and syrup was not even warmed which surprised me given the quality of everything else.

Fantastic food (I highly recommend the gnocchi). I would recommend trying Butchertown Grocery, but with the caveat that the restaurant might not be a totally comfortable place to be. I ate in the main dining area downstairs. The restaurant was pretty cold (I'm male, and I had to wear my coat throughout the meal... I was not alone). The place was also pretty dark. They say you first eat with your eyes, and I literally took out my cell phone flashlight to see my dishes before digging in. I wouldn't complain at a lower priced establishment. However, this restaurant is at the level of fine-dining. They are doing the really hard part (food) very right, and yet the easy part (thermostat and lights) are a bit off. The place was busy, though, so I suppose enough people don't mind. That said, if you are sensitive to temperature, perhaps you should wait until the spring to give the place a try. :-)

Upstairs space, Lola, has a unique and classy (yet very hip) atmosphere. Food and service were outstanding.

My wife and I went to Butchertown Grocery for my birthday dinner while visiting Louisville. The food and cocktails were excellent. Although the noise level was loud for my taste, everything else about the experience was very good. I told them it was a special occasion through OpenTable when making the reservation. They acknowledged it with had a nice, handwritten card at the table and some complimentary brownies to take home (which were amazing). Recommend.

We were in town from Dallas to celebrate my husband's 40th birthday on the bourbon trail, and loved our dinner and drinks here. The service was great without being fussy, and everything we ate was really, really good. The gnocchi appetizer was a standout to me as well as the BBQ shrimp, and the rack of lamb. Would definitely recommend to friends.
