Butcher & Singer Ratings and Reviews
We usually go to Butcher & Singer for special occasions. It's pricey but by far my husband and I's favorite restaurant. Usually the food is impeccable and the service amazing. The actual dining area is beautiful and very old school done well. With restaurant week, though, you're sacrificing the usual dining experience for a reduced price. You really do get great value with the restaurant week menu but with that you get tables jammed together where you are practically sitting with the people at the tables on either side of you. Also, the food suffers. Our filets which are usually amazing were tough, overcooked and obviously spent too much time under the heat lamp. The wait staff were having a hard time being their usual attentive selves with such a crowd. They were all obviously frazzled.
As much as I appreciate the reduced cost for my favorite place, I don't think it's worth the sacrifice you have to make. Go when restaurant week is over and then truly experience what Butcher & Singer has to offer.
Services was wonderful ask for tall Brian. His knowledge of the food and wines were magnificent. He was polite, attentive and knowledgeable. He added that extra special touch on top of the ambience and the decorative surroundings. He explained the menu with passion as if he was making the food himself. Once the food arrived it was even better than the way he explained it.
This is my favorite steak house. The decor is lovely; employees are very friendly. My favorite food is the French onion soup; I have never tasted anything so delicious. It was restaurant week so I ordered from the 3course menu. Everything was delicious. I t was my son s birthday and they brought him a lemon tart with a candle. The staff was very courteous and helpful.
Restaurant week - Jan 16 meal. My husband and I each had the crab cake for app, then the filet for entree. Both the app and entree were excellent. Steak was cooked to perfection and very tender. I had the lemon tart with blueberry, which is essentially lemon meringue pie with blueberry compote - excellent! And my husband had the pot o’chocolate - hmm- clear glass when he was finished! Ryan was our server, and he was excellent! On point for our drinks, and not intrusive otherwise. Overall, this was an excellent experience. Well done Butcher & Singer!
Restaurant week - hence the great value review - was really good. The standout was the lemon tart. The salmon was dry and chewy on the outside, but super moist on the inside. The crab cake was good but did not blow my mind.
Service was great - although I wish they served fresh bread. Not likely to pay full price, except for the lemon tart (Yum!)
The place is really nice, the old hollywood theme was very well done (not too cliche or anything). Despite the intention of creating an intimate/personal atmosphere with the dim lighting, it was too dim, making it hard to see what I was eating, taking good pics, and overall enjoying the ambiance with my friend. Our server was attentive and funny, made sure to swing by my table every 10 min or so. The food was well... OK at best, nothing really stood out.
Crab cake - The plating for this looked a little sad. Almost as if someone got one of those frozen crab cakes and decided to throw some coleslaw on the side. Tastewise, both food components did not compliment each other in anyway. The crab cake tasted fresh, but didn't taste as if it hard any sort of seasoning on it. The coleslaw might as well have just been a salad with a weak dressing.
Salmon - There were several things very good about this dish, but also some things that could definitely have been a lot better. The skin was nicely crisped/seared. The salmon itself was light and the sauce accompanying it went really well with it. The fingerling potatoes were a bit of a disappointment though, I wasn't expecting it to be shaved very thinly and to be so.. bland. I am not even sure that there were mushrooms in this, but the salmon itself makes up for it.
Lemon tart - Hands down, don't order this unless you enjoy super tart desserts (more tart than average). This looked really good, but the reality of it was so far from expectations. The lemon wasn't even to sour or zesty, it just tasted like the bottom remnants of bottled lemon juice. The blueberries that came with it did not add much to the dessert. I didn't eat much of this.
I went here for a "date night" with my husband, and we were very impressed! Our waiter was very knowledgeable and friendly. The steak was melt-in-your-mouth, and the drinks were phenomenal! The 40's decor and theme was very classy. It's a bit pricey (and fancy) for an "everyday" sort of outing, but I highly recommend it for a special occasion!
Delightful experience all around! The food was delish!!! The most perfectly prepared salmon I have ever had the pleasure to experience and the portion was just right. My fiancé’s burger was reportedly superb as were his fries. The cocktails were served quickly and were exceptional. Our server and other wait staff were cordial and informative and cleared unnecessary items before you had an opportunity to notice. Additionally, we had a schedule change and they were willing to accommodate an earlier arrival. Excellent!!!!!
We tried this restaurant on the first night of the Winter Philadelphia Restaurant Week 2018. It had been recommended to me prior to the restaurant week, so I figured it was as good a time as any. Our reservation was for 5:45, and were sat immediately when we arrived during a full dinner seating. While the seating can be a bit close during a full dinner service, we were never uncomfortable. The decor was beautiful, with dim but appropriate lighting and low, unobtrusive music playing. Our server Andrew was incredibly charming and helpful, and his service was some of the best I've had. We never waited a noticeable amount of time for anything. The cocktails came out very quickly despite the full dining room, and the food came out of the kitchen with excellent timing. The cocktail menu is nicely sized, with a full range of spirits used. The best part of the cocktail menu to me was the multitude of variations on the classic Manhattan cocktail, one of my favorite drinks. I ordered an "Investment," with rye whiskey, sherry, grand marnier, and orange bitters, and it was absolutely fantastic. The restaurant week prix fixe menu was sort of standard for a steakhouse in my experience, and the food was really quite good. I had the caesar salad, the filet with creamed spinach, and a lemon tart with blueberry compote. I would certainly repeat for the price we paid, and will certainly think about repeating regardless.
The food is outstanding! I would highly recommend. The service was attentive and accommodating - meeting our every request. The biscuits are phenomenal. Come hungry!
The only issue we encountered was the smoke / fire alarm went off and rang for 20-30 minutes. Quite distracting and put a damper on the mood. Apparently this happens occasionally. Definitely not a reason to avoid the restaurant but something to be aware of.
Come hungry my friend!
My boyfriend and I went for our anniversary with high expectations. We don't dine fancy all the time but like to go out for fun or special occasions. We arrived pretty early and enjoyed some drinks at the bar, but didn't have to wait long for a table. I was expecting small portions, but the portions were a good size for me -- and everything tasted amazing. The staff is well-trained and it makes a huge difference. No empty plate stays on the table for more than a few seconds, no water is ever less than half-full, and you'll be asked if you'd like your next drink right away. No waiting for anything. I'm a waitress- I wish my coworkers worked this well together. I was so impressed. Plus the building is so pretty. We were admiring the tall curtains and murals. Overall, it was a great night and I spent much less than I was expecting. I hope we get to come back.
We always go here with another couple to celebrate my husbands birthday. It is always a fantastic evening. Service and food and drink are always great. This year made extra special by our server - Brian who was over the top amazing. Very nice, helpful and made great suggestions for our meal. He was so friendly and fun - we felt like we made a new friend. We will continue our tradition of coming back every year as we have never had a bad time.
Wonderful meal and great dining experience. Tuna tartare as an appetizer was good. Small fillet was expertly prepared and the Oscar style was a fantastic addition. Grilled cauliflower was tasty side to share. Dessert was the espresso ice cream with chocolate chips made for an excellent finish with coffee
Our first time dining (This is dining not eating) here. After a drink at the cozy bar we were seated and greeted by our server. Friendly and efficient service in a beautiful room, never rushed , the service was perfectly paced, menu was explained and order taken. My wife likes her steak medium well , and our server suggested the filet be butterflied so it could be prepared properly. Our steaks were excellent, my wife said it was the best one she ever had and mine was as good. The sides are huge, our potato dish would feed four easily., so sharing works. This goes onto my top 10 list, maybe top 5, certainly one of our best dining experiences in Philadelphia( which is our home base).I highly recommend.
