We come her efrequebtky and the food is always very well prepared and presented. Today unfortunately my husband found a runner band in his salad which of course ends anyone's meal. This doesn't take away from the wonderful service of our waiter who apologized profusely however it would have been nice to have them credit my husband's entire meal which included his tea instead of just the salad. Obviously, his meal was ruined as a whole. I will say that these things happen but it nonetheless is always an award situation of which our waiter handled it very well overall.
Been here several times and it's always a pleasant experience. Good food, great service, nice atmosphere. The 'roo burger was quite tasty and had interesting texture. Not as compact as a beef burger and not as sloppy as a sloppy joe but somewhere in between. Fettuccine was pretty dang delish. Might have to get that next time. The fries are fabulous --big, thick, crunchy on the outside/tender on the inside. You really can't go wrong here.
We made a last minute choice to come here for brunch because it was a short walk and it was pouring outside. We were very pleasantly surprised by what a wonderful meal we had. Adults and kids were all very happy. The highlights were the caramelized grapefruit, the grilled cheese and the donuts. The atmosphere was laid back, and it was good for conversation (tho it also wasn’t too crowded). The service was also wonderful!!
We were celebrating my husbands birthday and were in a hurry to get to a show at nearby Beacon theatre. The staff were quick and friendly and treated us to a lovely cocktail and dessert to enhance our celebration. The food was delicious and we loved the collection of Australian wines and desserts. The pavlova was truly authentic and delicious. Will definitely return when visiting NYC again.
Exceeded all of our expectations! We heard about this restaurant on a wine podcast, where owner Tim Harris spoke about the restaurant's extensive Australian wine list. We found ourselves in New York City without dinner plans and snagged a last-minute reservation for 2 for an early dinner. The menu is small but OMG we were blown away by the flavor and balance and quality of the food! We were uncertain what wine would pair well with our varied courses and Tim came by to help us navigate the menu. I had the roasted scallops to start and my boyfriend had the butternut squash soup - Tim sent over a glass of riesling (normally not my go-to white) which paired PERFECTLY with the food (seriously made me reconsider my feelings about riesling). I had the duck breast with plum as a main and boyfriend had kangaroo burger (how could you not... it's an Australian restaurant...) which were both incredible and tasted amazing with the Mornington Penninsula Pinot Noir that Tim recommended. Just when we were thinking we'd explode from all the delicious food, Tim sent over two glasses of the Noble One dessert wine, a delicious way to finish our very Aussie dinner date. Tim and the staff were all incredibly friendly and created an atmosphere of 'a night out with friends' even though we were in a foreign city. The restaurant itself was cozy and intimate and my only regret is that we had to run off without heading up to the Manhattan Cricket Club (private club by the same owners) to enjoy a nightcap before leaving. I hope to dine at Burke & Wills again if I return to NYC and would definitely recommend to anyone I know who appreciates good food and wine! Thanks!
We were there the evening after Thanksgiving- very low key with not a full dining room. The space is very intimate and cozy. The "Australian" theme is more subtle than overwhelming, service was fun and attentive. They offered excellent "small plates," which is exactly what we were in the mood for after stuffing ourselves for Thanksgiving. Looked like a very popular bar scene, too.
My husband and I were seeing a show later on and decided to try Burke & Wills solely based on reviews and the fact that they serve kangaroo burgers. Long story, but we found ourselves suddenly wondering what that tasted like so the choice to have dinner there was easy. We got there a few minutes earlier than the restaurant opened for dinner so we sat at the bar to wait. Very interesting menu of cocktails, we opted for two non-alcoholic drinks which were quite good. The dining room is nicely sized with a cozy atmosphere; the room has a glass skylight ceiling and I'm sure it's quite something during daylight hours.
We both opted for the aforementioned burger and it was fantastic. Served with a somewhat spicy house made ketchup, arugula and onion slices on a hearty bun. The meat was juicy and tender. Over sized steak fries were on the side and were quite good too. Since we still had some time we decided to split dessert - a warm chocolate cake served with vanilla (?) ice cream and fresh berries. One small mistep was the cake arrived at under room temperature. It was sent back and the second one arrived perfectly warmed. This is kind of a standard dessert in many places but always enjoyable and their version was quite good.
Service by all staff was friendly, helpful and well informed about the food; prices were moderate. It was very quiet when we arrived since it was early but I'd imagine the bar area especially must get noisy as it's extremely narrow and small (we had some difficultly leaving due to this, hard to get around the growing crowd).
We'll visit again if in the neighborhood as we'd like to try other dishes on the menu.
As a group of homesick Australians living in NYC we’d all been looking forward to a great Aussie Sunday Supper and almost everything lived up to expectations. The meals were delicious, especially the lamb which was well worth the price and cooked to perfection! The wine list has a great selection of good Australian wines covering the full spectrum of styles and affordability, so there’s something for everyone. The service was very hit and miss, sadly this detracted from what would have been a good overall experience. The Australian meeter/greeter was awesome, very friendly and chatty. Our French waiter was surly, uninterested and at times almost rude...we left a 10% tip. Sadly the major drawcard for us also turned out to be the worst thing on the menu...the Pavlova! This is the quintessential Australian dessert and evokes deep fondness and feelings of pure joy just at the mention of its name. What we were served was an abysmal confection of flat, hard meringue smothered in cream and berries. It was an utter disappointment. After the brilliant lamb and superb wine we would have been happy to ignore the grumpy French waiter, but the travesty that was the Pavlova was just too much. I hope the Chef travels to Australia and experiences what a Pavlova is supposed to be, hell even a $10 supermarket-bought Pavlova would be a good place to start to get a sense of how incredibly far off the mark his/her interpretation actually is.
Loved it. Absolutely delicious and original, unique food. Great ambience. Happy people at the bar - it was lively but not loud at all. In the back, so comfortable, really pretty, subdued tones, easy to converse. No dress code per se but everyone dressed smart casual. Lovely waiter and manager, who came by. Don't go ravenous, though. Portions were on the small side. It was worth it. The arctic char small plate is a must.
Every time I take a friend, they are wowed! The outside is unassuming. Walking through the bar is like so many NYC bars. Then we walk into the dining room. The high geometrical glass atrium ceiling gives a wonderful spaciousness, particularly when the moon is out. The green leather banquette stretching along three sides of the room, and a little on the fourth, makes Burke & Willis one of the coziest, intimate clubby rooms in NYC.
Everything I have had here is good. Once I had to try the kangaroo burger (this is an Australian restaurant after all). Most recently we started with a dozen oysters. My dining partner prefers smaller oysters, so we ordered the Beausoleils from New Brunswick. They had a delightful briny taste. Burke & Willis provided a cucumber mignonette sauce that struck me as one of the best mignonettes I've ever had.
Every time I come here, I overindulge in the bread. My wife made me go out and search the Upper West Side the next morning to try to find something similar.
Both of us had the branzino. By this time, I was too involved in conversation, but when we stopped to focus on the fish, both of us commented that it was wonderful.
I tried to coax my wife to just see the secretive Manhattan Cricket Club, which has no signs outside and one accesses through a secret stairway inside Burke & Willis. If you have time for more clubbiness and cocktails before dinner, or just want to stop by for a quiet drink, it's a perfect spot!
Nice room, but the service was not attentive. We had to ask for champagne flutes for our champagne, had to ask for plates for our oysters, and the rack of lamb for $40 was 2 greasy cutlets with a smear of something that looks like Velveeta. Disappointing and hard to see anything Australian about it, especially the branzino which was fried to the texture of leather, and the dessert pavlova, which was topped with a blob of funky cheesey tasting cream. Heavy handed, unimaginative food bordering on unpleasant.
