Everything was really great except the hostess was extremely rude and short with us. She barely took us to our table- just set menus on the table and pointed to it. Gave us extremely rude looks for the duration of our visit. Besides that- our server and the other staff were great and the food was delicious!
Our waiter was absolutely fantastic!!! Food and sangria were delicious. Love coming to this place.
I will absolutely be returning to Bulerias! The restaurant was beautiful, the staff was friendly, and everything we ate was outstanding! This is now my go-to tapas restaurant!
I came here for my birthday dinner. Friday night for 6 people. They indicated only having 6:30 or 8:30 time slots so I figured it would be a hoppin place. We were the only ones there for probably an hour at 6:30. They sat us in the corner of the basement at, what we discovered, was the DJ mixer table? It was uncomfortable to sit at because it's a lunky table with minimal leg space. Also very dark and dingy in that corner. We asked to move to a brighter table and this wasn't a problem. Majority of the food was decent, chicken was flavorful but the paella left little to be desired. It was so bland and we sent it back. I don't think this place is really worth the cost. I didn't like the ambiance, it didn't seem like a ton of people were there on a Friday night which seemed odd. The waiter was pretty attentive and polite. Overall, it was an underwhelming experience.
This is my all-time favorite tapas place. I have never been disappointed in a dish I've ordered. There is delicious bread to start your meals. I would highly recommend eating here. The price is very moderate for a tapas place and totally worth the high quality food.
WHERE THERE FOR 2 1/2 AS OUR FOOD WAS NEVER DONE AND THE MANGER ONLY STOPPED BY OUR TABLE AFTER WE ASKED FOR HER.
Great selection of tapas. Octopus, empanadas carne and jamon Serrano were excellent. Good selection of Spanish wines.
This was my first time at Bulerias and we were meeting a couple id friends from out if town. After reading all the reviews, that were either 5 or 2 stars, we were reluctant about about Bulerias, but it was the only Spanish restaurant in Chicago with a reservation at our desired time. We came in, the waiter was very nice and attentive our friends came in we ordered the paella negra (black due to the squid ink). It's was simply delicious! Then we ordered the gambas al ajillo (garlic shrimp), carne en tostada (steak on crostini) tapas and pollo a la brava (a spicy chicken dish) and of course red sangria. Even though the portions were on the small side for the price, everything was truly delicious! The waiter only faltered once. We're ordered more bread and 15 minutes later he came back indicating they had ran out of bread...?? Really!!?? Well I don't hold it against him. Management probably restricts his ability to give out more bread. I would just likely go back.
I really don't like leaving bad reviews, but I think that this is the most mediocre Spanish food I've ever had in Chicago. Every single dish that we ordered was bad to mediocre. The patata bravas came out oily and soggy, we ordered some chicken and chorizo dish that tasted like it would be a dish you'd get at a questionable Chinese restaurant, the mushrooms al ajillo tasted like they just served us a canned of mushrooms drenched in vegetable oil, and worst of all, they drizzled olive oil on the jamón íbero, like did they do that because they are criminally stupid or were they trying to conceal the taste of the cheap ham they are serving? What a disappointment.
Several visits over the years. The food is as good or better than the more famous Cafe Ba-Ba-Ree-Ba and the service is much better (Manuel). Portuguese mussels, bacon- wrapped dates, spicy potatoes, and bananas with caramel.
Great experience and the food was awesome. My only complaint would be if you charge for additional table bread, make it clear. We spent a lot of $$$ to get nickel and dime'd for an extra piece of bread.
Really solid spot. Service and ambience were great. Portions were quite large, food was tasty.
We came to Bulreas for a business lunch. The service was great. The dining area is very intimate which was cozy on a terribly cold rainy day. Our favs were the beef skewer (very tender and flavorful) and garlic potato salad - YUMMY!
Dined at Bulerias on New Year’s Eve. We’ve been there numerous times in the past and enjoyed it. We made our reservation for 2 through OpenTable and clicked the button to redeem points for a gift card toward our reservation. More on that later.
Service was slow, but not bad. We ordered our favorites off of the menu. No complaints there, other than the crostini’s served with the baked goat cheese. They were cold, soaked in oil to the point of being soggy, and obviously prepared way in advance.
At the end of the meal, we received the check that had an extra 20% added on for groups. I asked our server and was told that it was “something we’re doing tonight”, and she refused to take it off the bill. When I showed her the OpenTable gift card, she refused to accept it. I understand that it was NYE, but the restaurant had nothing in writing about not accepting gift cards. I certainly didn’t appreciate the 20% charge for mediocre service and the obvious indifference we were shown. Undecided if we will return.
Food was ok on this day and it came out slow when there really wasn’t that many people in at the time.
Jamón Ibérico was 3 thin slices of ok ham at an extremely high price. Paella negra had way too much inkl (I’ve had hundreds of these throughout Spain and other restaurants in city) and it’s supposed to be seafood but literally only had 1 shrimp, 1 calamari and one squid , ONE each.
They said they were low on items due to the prior day; I suggest if you can’t make a dish right, with the proper amount of ingredients or up to par (maybe they had limited chefs ) don’t offer it at all. May try again in future.
Great meal, great service, and quality price.
I always have great service and the food is delicious. One of my favorite places to recommend .
Slow ish service but good food!
Went for thanksgiving. So much tasty food.
Went with my daughter and her 2 college roommates. Loved the ambiance and the food was so good, and many diverse options. Girls loved Tapas for the first time!
I always enjoy Bulerias. Their food is consistently very good and never disappointing. Their sangria with a shot of Brandy is so delicious and addicting I almost want to go there just for that alone! If you are lucky one evening while you are there, in the lower level of the restaurant, they have live music with flamenco dancing. Fun, entertaining and adds to the whole evening. I would recommend Bulerias to friends and family for good food, a great time with a great atmosphere and service.
When we arrived and told there was no table for us and that we would have to wait. They marked us as a no-show on opentable even though we were all there within 10 minutes of our reservation and 2 people were right on time. After a short wait we were seated in the very hot basement. The waiter was very nice but either overworked or very to service as we waited a long time to get our wine glasses. There is a $15 corkage fee for BYOB you can get reduced to $7 by signing up your email to some list. The food had hits and misses. The shrimp was very good but the croquettes were greasy. There are much better tapas restaurants in Lakeview.
Found this little gem by accident. Doesn't look like much from the outside but don't let it fool you! Food and service were great! Very attentive. A little too dark for our liking but nothing terrible. Didn't know they had live music downstairs. Will come back to check that out.
Server wouldn’t have served us if I didn’t call him over. Nobody came over and asked how our food was tasting. It’s like we were invisible. Will not go back. Food is tasty and is the only saving grace. Terrible service
Recently enjoyed another wonderful evening at Bulerias with vegan and carni friends -thanks to the accommodating staff who were spot-on in their recommendations of delicious tapas! This is a great place to meander with friends and to enjoy the ambience whether outdoors or inside. We were also entertained by the exquisite vocalist, Ms. Cecy Santana, singing bossa nova, baby! Doesn't get much better...
Every dish we ordered was wonderful. We are looking forward to trying more items on the menu.
Overall very good tapas. Absolutely loved the Dátiles and Paella, but my boyfriend didn’t enjoy his pincho de carne (he said was too salty).
Food was great, service was impeccable- helpful with deciding on type and number of plates, attentive but not overwhelming.
Great date spot with quick service and great food.
Excellent service ! Delicious food! Really good prices
Fantastic service, great food
The management hasn't updated menus in so long that the servers aren't able to properly do their jobs. They did their very best to find us a bottle of wine that fit what we were looking for, but they had to search for it. This means that management isn't paying enough attention to the guests' experience nor their wine program. The wine list seems great and provides good value, but the maintenance is lacking. The bottle we decided on was served at proper temp, so ownership has invested there. The food was so salty we didn't each much of it. It is so unfortunate because their menu is creative and interesting to read, but the execution just isn't there. Service itself was great. It is clear that the servers are just working with a management team that doesn't have it all together.
We love Bulerias! The DÁTILES are the best anywhere! Peach margarita with a shot of Brandy - Plátanos Caramelizados! OMG!!!! Don't miss this place - a Chicago treasure!
Great food and friendly service. I recommend the papas bravas, the chorizo and the gambas al ajillo. Good wine selection, the only issue is the temperature of the red wine bottles (54°F) as I like mine room temperature (around 70°F).
This was our second time there. It was a less than optimal experience for us. When we got there, there was only one server (other than the bar tender who didn't ask us a thing) who was scrambling around. We waited for a bit before he came over. Then seemed so frazzled and confused. Wasn't the most 'warm welcome'-ing experience. After we sat down, it was quite a while before he brought menus over. Then more of a wait to ask for drinks. The food was not bad...portion sizes rather small but that is tapas for you...so that's fine. All through the evening, the HVAC kept blowing on and off loudly. Also, there was a Flamenco dance performance on in the basement. Super loud banging is all we could hear. Not a peaceful experience at all. All in all, I would say, it was okay....we won't be going back there again most probably (but never say never , I suppose ;-) !)
The steak options were delicious, but stay away from the salmon and the calamari. The calamari was extremely chewy and what is advertised as great salmon pieces is the smoked salmon from the deli packages.
Great menu, great food, great service. Atmosphere is a somewhat lacking but the food makes up for it.
The service was highly lacking (it took over 30 minutes to get the bill) and the portions aren't enough for two people to split.
Great tapas experience overall. Sangria is customizable with extra shots of brandy, etc. And the food choices had tapas classics but with many unique items to choose from as well. We also found it to have a very respectable amount of vegetarian options as well. Food and drinks were both outstanding and the service was very prompt.
