We had a great time. Our waiter was very knowledgeable and when we asked for recommendations on food he gave great choices....the place is very lively and would go back to see the live show. Food was excellent and dessert was delicious.
This was our first visit to the Ashland Avenue location. The food was excellent. The service was friendly and warm
The bathroom was trashed. The faucet was disconnected and loose. Someone had spilled a liquid on the stairs going down to the bathrooms and the floor had standing water.
Outstanding. Love the food and ambiance, and the server was lovely!
Would have rated higher on value if not for the service being so slow. However, the food is great. Highly recommend the datiles, the queso cabra, and the filet. Pass on the mussels.
Wonderful authentic Spanish Tapas! Great, friendly and attentive service! We will return, Mucho Gracias!
This reservation was for a XMAS dinner. It took over 10 minutes to be greeted after arriving on time. Apparently there was only 1 person working the dining room and bar area. We asked to be seated for our 5pm reservation and were told the dining room was full and the only available tables were high tops next to the bar. I said we were not interested in a high top table as we had an elder dining with us that could not sit at a bar stool plus this was not appropriate for a Xmas dinner especially since we had pre reserved a 5pm seating. We were then told that it would be a 1 hour wait if we wanted a standard table. The server did apologize however this was totally unacceptable. We had pre reserved a table and were told one was not available when we arrived. Obviously, they had given them away to other customers. We left and decided to try and reserve a table somewhere else but encountered a second problem. A new reservation could not be made because our original reservation had not been cancelled by the server. We even called back and asked specifically for it be canceled from the system. It was never done.
We will never ever return to dine at this establishment again.
The restaurant seating was choppy. We sat upstairs where there were four tables and it was incredibly loud. I would not tag the noise level as “energetic”. To loud to converse.
Recommended for a casual night with friends, especially when the weather is nice outside, it's a comfortable noise level where one can converse without having to shout. Food is fine - a couple of items (roast chicken, mushrooms) were really great. Decent wines. Not the best for kids, unless you can sit outside, but great for a night catching up with friends.
It was a slow Thursday night with just us and another table. The wine I wanted from the menu was not available. The one suggested was a suitable replacement. The food menu had the classic tapas selections and did not disappoint. The only real problem was the service as it tended to disappear for stretches. Overall the place was good but I wanted it to be better
The food was very good. They had a large selection of tapas and we sampled a number of them along with two desserts (crema catalan and chhurros) which were delicious. We went on a Sunday night and it was quiet as there were not many customers. The restaurant is narrow and one has to navigate steps to get to some of the tables. We enjoyed the food and the service was good.
Amazing Tapas, loved the outdoor seating
Waiter himself was fine once present, but it took forever for anyone to come to our table. I understand it was a Friday night, but it wasn't THAT busy. Food was incredible, space a little confined, noise level OK, but that was mitigated by several drunk groups nearby. I would still highly recommend, but perhaps not on a Friday or Saturday night.
Great service, delicious food.
Delicious, great value. Not quite the same as being in Spain, but close. Try the seafood soup, croquettes, and of course tomato bread.
Everything was really great except the hostess was extremely rude and short with us. She barely took us to our table- just set menus on the table and pointed to it. Gave us extremely rude looks for the duration of our visit. Besides that- our server and the other staff were great and the food was delicious!
We had a reservation for Mother’s Day for four people. Hostess was not friendly and left to go check out table. Two more different people came to ask about our reservation. This place in chaotic and no one seems to know their role. They took us 10 minutes after our reservation and took us straight to the “DJ Table” and proceeded to tell us it was “our lucky day” because the table was open and the Flamenco dancing was about to start. Waiter was okay and food was okay. 45 minutes into our meal the hostess and a male employee kept staring at us - and still no Flamenco dancing. It appears they were scoping to see if we were almost done with our meal. We literally ordered quickly so we could eat and enjoy the dancers. By the time we were ready to order dessert and coffee, the Flamenco dancing was about to start. This is when the hostess came up to the table and said “we need you to move to the bar and have your dessert at the bar because we have a party of six upstairs waiting for this table. We will give you one free dessert if you move to the bar.” Really??!! Are they for real?! Is this a way to treat a customer with four people that ordered drinks and lots of food? We never asked for this DJ table. We had a standing reservation that we made in advance way before Mother’s Day. Our waiter finally showed up and we ordered dessert and coffee. How coincidental that one of the desserts we wanted was “sold out”. We ate our dessert, had our coffee, paid the bill, and exited this restaurant with the worst customer service we have EVER attended. Never again. Not even if it was free. To top it off , we never received our Open Table points. I had to call Open Table customer service two weeks after Mother’s Day. I spoke to the manager two days after the reservation and she said she would contact Open Table. She didn’t. Save your time and money and go somewhere worth your money.
Our waiter was absolutely fantastic!!! Food and sangria were delicious. Love coming to this place.
I will absolutely be returning to Bulerias! The restaurant was beautiful, the staff was friendly, and everything we ate was outstanding! This is now my go-to tapas restaurant!
I came here for my birthday dinner. Friday night for 6 people. They indicated only having 6:30 or 8:30 time slots so I figured it would be a hoppin place. We were the only ones there for probably an hour at 6:30. They sat us in the corner of the basement at, what we discovered, was the DJ mixer table? It was uncomfortable to sit at because it's a lunky table with minimal leg space. Also very dark and dingy in that corner. We asked to move to a brighter table and this wasn't a problem. Majority of the food was decent, chicken was flavorful but the paella left little to be desired. It was so bland and we sent it back. I don't think this place is really worth the cost. I didn't like the ambiance, it didn't seem like a ton of people were there on a Friday night which seemed odd. The waiter was pretty attentive and polite. Overall, it was an underwhelming experience.
This is my all-time favorite tapas place. I have never been disappointed in a dish I've ordered. There is delicious bread to start your meals. I would highly recommend eating here. The price is very moderate for a tapas place and totally worth the high quality food.
WHERE THERE FOR 2 1/2 AS OUR FOOD WAS NEVER DONE AND THE MANGER ONLY STOPPED BY OUR TABLE AFTER WE ASKED FOR HER.
Great selection of tapas. Octopus, empanadas carne and jamon Serrano were excellent. Good selection of Spanish wines.
This was my first time at Bulerias and we were meeting a couple id friends from out if town. After reading all the reviews, that were either 5 or 2 stars, we were reluctant about about Bulerias, but it was the only Spanish restaurant in Chicago with a reservation at our desired time. We came in, the waiter was very nice and attentive our friends came in we ordered the paella negra (black due to the squid ink). It's was simply delicious! Then we ordered the gambas al ajillo (garlic shrimp), carne en tostada (steak on crostini) tapas and pollo a la brava (a spicy chicken dish) and of course red sangria. Even though the portions were on the small side for the price, everything was truly delicious! The waiter only faltered once. We're ordered more bread and 15 minutes later he came back indicating they had ran out of bread...?? Really!!?? Well I don't hold it against him. Management probably restricts his ability to give out more bread. I would just likely go back.
I really don't like leaving bad reviews, but I think that this is the most mediocre Spanish food I've ever had in Chicago. Every single dish that we ordered was bad to mediocre. The patata bravas came out oily and soggy, we ordered some chicken and chorizo dish that tasted like it would be a dish you'd get at a questionable Chinese restaurant, the mushrooms al ajillo tasted like they just served us a canned of mushrooms drenched in vegetable oil, and worst of all, they drizzled olive oil on the jamón íbero, like did they do that because they are criminally stupid or were they trying to conceal the taste of the cheap ham they are serving? What a disappointment.
Several visits over the years. The food is as good or better than the more famous Cafe Ba-Ba-Ree-Ba and the service is much better (Manuel). Portuguese mussels, bacon- wrapped dates, spicy potatoes, and bananas with caramel.
Great experience and the food was awesome. My only complaint would be if you charge for additional table bread, make it clear. We spent a lot of $$$ to get nickel and dime'd for an extra piece of bread.
Really solid spot. Service and ambience were great. Portions were quite large, food was tasty.
We came to Bulreas for a business lunch. The service was great. The dining area is very intimate which was cozy on a terribly cold rainy day. Our favs were the beef skewer (very tender and flavorful) and garlic potato salad - YUMMY!
Dined at Bulerias on New Year’s Eve. We’ve been there numerous times in the past and enjoyed it. We made our reservation for 2 through OpenTable and clicked the button to redeem points for a gift card toward our reservation. More on that later.
Service was slow, but not bad. We ordered our favorites off of the menu. No complaints there, other than the crostini’s served with the baked goat cheese. They were cold, soaked in oil to the point of being soggy, and obviously prepared way in advance.
At the end of the meal, we received the check that had an extra 20% added on for groups. I asked our server and was told that it was “something we’re doing tonight”, and she refused to take it off the bill. When I showed her the OpenTable gift card, she refused to accept it. I understand that it was NYE, but the restaurant had nothing in writing about not accepting gift cards. I certainly didn’t appreciate the 20% charge for mediocre service and the obvious indifference we were shown. Undecided if we will return.
Food was ok on this day and it came out slow when there really wasn’t that many people in at the time.
Jamón Ibérico was 3 thin slices of ok ham at an extremely high price. Paella negra had way too much inkl (I’ve had hundreds of these throughout Spain and other restaurants in city) and it’s supposed to be seafood but literally only had 1 shrimp, 1 calamari and one squid , ONE each.
They said they were low on items due to the prior day; I suggest if you can’t make a dish right, with the proper amount of ingredients or up to par (maybe they had limited chefs ) don’t offer it at all. May try again in future.
Great meal, great service, and quality price.
I always have great service and the food is delicious. One of my favorite places to recommend .
Slow ish service but good food!
Went for thanksgiving. So much tasty food.
Went with my daughter and her 2 college roommates. Loved the ambiance and the food was so good, and many diverse options. Girls loved Tapas for the first time!
I always enjoy Bulerias. Their food is consistently very good and never disappointing. Their sangria with a shot of Brandy is so delicious and addicting I almost want to go there just for that alone! If you are lucky one evening while you are there, in the lower level of the restaurant, they have live music with flamenco dancing. Fun, entertaining and adds to the whole evening. I would recommend Bulerias to friends and family for good food, a great time with a great atmosphere and service.
When we arrived and told there was no table for us and that we would have to wait. They marked us as a no-show on opentable even though we were all there within 10 minutes of our reservation and 2 people were right on time. After a short wait we were seated in the very hot basement. The waiter was very nice but either overworked or very to service as we waited a long time to get our wine glasses. There is a $15 corkage fee for BYOB you can get reduced to $7 by signing up your email to some list. The food had hits and misses. The shrimp was very good but the croquettes were greasy. There are much better tapas restaurants in Lakeview.
Found this little gem by accident. Doesn't look like much from the outside but don't let it fool you! Food and service were great! Very attentive. A little too dark for our liking but nothing terrible. Didn't know they had live music downstairs. Will come back to check that out.
