Nice menu, limited choices but the mussels were outstanding. Say at the bar after dinner, fun watching John, the owner, show off his talents behind the bar. Very clean and great presentation. Would go back!
Excellent food and service. You can tell that the cocktails are made by experts in their craft. A very enjoyable meal and experience overall.
Buffalo Proper is the best value in Buffalo!! We eat here every time we’re in town! The farm-to-table menu coupled with the Chef’s incredible creativity is delicious and the price is far lower than you’d expect for such quality. And the drinks!!! I have no problem spending $10+ dollars at the bar when each drink is made with thought by a true mixologist. Just tell them your favorite flavors and they will mix something you’ll ask for every time. Dinner for two with an app, multiple plates to share and a couple of drinks a piece for around $100; you can’t beat it.
We tried this place for the first time and we were thrilled. We chose the special which was pick 1 small dish, 1 main dish and a drink each. The food was amazing!! We could have been full with the small dish though. The mixed drinks menu seemed interesting too. Next time we will have to try one. I would have liked a few more beers on tap. But I found a Stout that wasn’t bad.
The friendly staff and delicious food (and desserts) are reason enough to visit Buffalo Proper. And, come to think of it, they are also reason enough to keep coming back.
Food was absolutely amazing and the drinks were fabulous. Steak was awesome.
The atmosphere is pleasant. The food was great. Service was better than average. Cocktails are pricey, but that's to be expected if you're choosing to visit a handcrafted cocktail lounge serving unique offerings. Would go again.
Decent food, good ambience, friendly bartenders, accommodating waitress.
Snooty host/ not welcoming of families. Seemed bothered by our mere existence from seating us up until half-heartedly offering the dessert menu.
Although I've dined here a number of times, I would not recommend it again at this price point if the host is going to make your party feel like an unwelcome burden.
If they can be nice and a little less pretentious, then yes, it's a cool spot for the atmosphere.
Food was excellent. I had a burger, and said it was the best burger I ever had. My husband had a pork dish and he as well loved his meal.
Only complaint, I made reservation on line. They did call me to confirm. It was snowing out and when they called we told them we would probably be a little late to which they responded “no problem”. We had trouble with an Uber ride(we are from Long Island), and they kept calling us. When we arrived, there were plenty of empty tables. When we finished dinner, same amount of empty tables. Not quite sure for all the phone calls.
Service was excellent. Food was just too odd. Too many flavors competing with each other. Music was odd and very loud. Beautiful place but menu needs to be toned down with more traditional, appealing dishes. Trying to hard to make unique food doesn’t always work.
Bartender makes your drink taste and look like a piece of art. Food was, as always, amazing.
My daughter and I attend every time we go to see a play at Shea's. Not only is the food delicious but the service is great and we don't feel rushed and the staff is very friendly. Some people might say it's a little pricey but I don't tend to go out very often and coming here is a treat!
The food was to perfection and the atmosphere is done impeccably well. Some other reviews had said that the service was not great, but in my experience it was wonderful. The server was attentive and provided details on drinks and dessert choices when asked. Food was served in a timely manner as we had asked due to the theater tickets we had. Overall I would say 4.5 out of 5. I would definitely recommend it and would dine there again.
Great place for a great meal and drinks. Definitely a good fit for buffalo
First time here and it was excellent! Our server was outstanding. The food was cooked wonderfully, though my burger was a bit messy. We were seated right away by a chipper host, taken care of by the busser and server greatly and enjoyed every minute. The ambiance is great for a date, not too loud or quite. We will definitely be back!
Small plates and large, innovative dishes skillfully prepared!
We went before kinky boots and had a very nice dinner but it was 40 minutes between salad and entrée which seem to be quite a long period of time.
The menu is short and sweet, but offers something for everyone. The menu changes frequently to match the seasons. Beautiful old building with a very nice atmosphere.
The hostess was very busy and was not easily found. The other bar staff did not take it upon themselves to direct us or attend to us in anyway.
I had to go up stairs to find out if we would be seated.
The server upstairs was very busy and directed me back downstairs to find the hostess to be seated .
Drinks and appetizers were great. Both meals were very tasty and well presented. My kimchi pancakes were burnt but the beef was tasty and the spiciness was to my liking.
My wife's cod was well prepared and very delicious.
Aside from the initial confusion the night ended positively with informative conversation with the server upstairs.
Would recommend the establishment to anyone as there was an eclectic mix of diners and guests at the bar.
My server was impeccable. I wish I could remember her name! Bah! The food is always amazing. Love Love Love
Reading the menu options, we thought there wasn’t enough to choose from. But in fact no more were needed. All courses were of high quality. Creative and delicious. Good wine selection too.
First time eating at Buffalo Proper, and our meals were delicious. The service was excellent, and we took the hostess' suggestion on her favorite meal. The braised beef beautifully plated and tasted amazing. We'll definitely go back!
I wish we had this restaurant where I live Oakville Ontario
Second time there....super fun cocktail menu and bar staff.
Food was good...just not very hot
Great way to experience the Restaurant scene in Buffalo, Menu is creative and always something for everyone.
Appetizers and drinks were tasty and reasonably priced; mains were ambitious but disappointing, especially for the cost. Would recommend for drinks and snacks rather than dinner.
I have been here many times. Always left satisfied with the value
Was little loud when we first walken in, but then settled down....food is EXCELLENT ! A little confusing with 3 servers waiting on us, all asking if we've decided what to order yet....but we would and will go back.
POOR service with GREAT food. It was a 90 degree day in September and it was HOT in there. We ordered an app but the server never put it in. We would have ordered more drinks had the waiter come and checked on our empty glasses. Also, they delivered two of four entrees only to realize it was to the wrong table. They took them away and ours arrived shortly there after. Good place with GREAT food but poor service and a very limited menu. Not sure I would go back.
The creative cocktails here are amazing. Dinner was well prepared and tasty. The only complaint is the lack of air conditioning in the upstairs dining room.
Amazing!!! Waiter was awesome food was so so so so good!
Brussels sprouts are a must!
This was my second time eating here. Both times I split the Tomahawk ribeye with my party. The first time, it was beyond amazing. This most recent visit, however, the ribeye was served lukewarm at best with very little flavor. I ordered an old fashioned (as I always do) and this time it was served in a rocks glass only half full, with crushed ice (instead of the one giant cube). By the time the drinks reached the table (as we were sitting in the upstairs dining area), it seemed as though our drinks had sat and somewhat melted at service bar. Had there been a bunch of other tables, I wouldn't have been so disappointed, but we were the only people dining that evening. I was slightly embarrassed, as I had talked the food up so much, and our meal, drinks and service left much to be desired. To be fair, I am not one to complain, so I didn't mention anything to my server (except about how my drink seemed so much different than every other visit, to which she replied "oh, yeah, the bar just must be really busy". Nonetheless, I've always enjoyed Buffalo Proper for the ambiance and cocktails, so I'm definitely willing to give it another go.
The place wasn't too busy for a Friday, but my date and I were sandwiched between two other tables that were about a 2 feet away from eachother. Took awhile to get drinks and service was a little slow and awkward. We shared the tomahawk steak and I thought it was good for the price. Nothing incredible, but still solid. I did order two of the "manlier" sounding cocktails on the menu, but they were super weak and sweet. Paid $10 per drink (which is common nowadays) and left the restaurant with a taste in my mouth that I just ate a 16oz bag of skittles - not the best feeling after paying $59 for a big steak.
I wouldn't not suggest coming here, but this last time was by far our worst experience. We've had really impressive food here in the past, which is why I would still suggest coming here. The Brussell Sprouts are legendary if they're on the menu.
Overall, I'd say this place can be hit or miss. When they hit, it's a great experience. When they miss, you'll be wishing you went elsewhere. It's tough to come here over Toutant which I feel is always on their game, better food, and less expensive.
Went here for date night and ordered the Japanese style fried chicken. Great value for a small meal, and the Pim(p) cup cocktail was fabulous.
Buffalo Proper is a favorite of mine when in the area. It's creative, great use of old house, unique menu, good atmosphere. The service can be inconsistent but it is never bad; only good to great.
Loved Buffalo Proper, but my recent experience leaves a bad taste. Ordered ice tea, was told they didn't brew any. Ordered the special....Proper Pasta....they were out. It was so hot in the restaraunt that my son had to get up and go outside several times to cool down. Other tables were also complaining. If your customers are that warm, turn on a fan or get air conditioning. Our waiter seemed out of it!! Checked on larger table 3 times, never asked us if we wanted anything more to drink. Food was delicious as always!
Buffalo Proper never disappoints. Food was creative and tasted great. Service was outstanding.
The service has always matched the level of food and drink. Polite, friendly without the waiter thinking they are your friend. The level of inventiveness, flavors and thought that goes into all the dishes is of the highest quality . I've been there 4 or 5 times both alone and with friends and will continue to sing it's praises! John is the best bartender I may have ever had! I'm from Cleveland and we have some outstanding restaurants. I wish we had a Buffalo Proper too.
great dishes, well done, late in the evenings the place changes its mood to more of a loud/hipster hangout, but the food is good, prices are fair, no complaints...
