About Buddakan - Philadelphia
Stephen Starr’s Buddakan is a spectacular restaurant featuring exotic flavors of modern Asian cuisine with creativity and drama. Bon Appetit notes, "The mostly white space is striking, with a lit-from-within communal table in the middle of the room, a waterfall & a ten-foot, candle-bedecked Buddha. The religious icon watches over hip customers indulging in pan-Asian cuisine that far surpasses the fare usually found at hot spots like this." Newsweek reports, "Design also serves as a signifier for cuisine. You walk into Buddakan, one of the hottest new restaurants in Philadelphia, past a shimmering waterfall & Japanese river stones & you say to yourself, 'ginger-miso everything' even before you see the magnificent 10-foot Buddha dominating the dining room." Named one of “America's Top 50 Restaurants" by Travel & Leisure and 'Top Restaurant for Fun' by Gourmet, Buddakan has become one of the country's most talked about restaurants.

Buddakan - Philadelphia Ratings and Reviews
Delicious food, great service. The vegetable portions were large which was nice because they were delicious. I had the Kung Pao lobster and I wish it hadn’t have been battered- but the coating was light and it was very good. We also had cocktails which were good and not strong. We shared everything and did not feel rushed at all. I didn’t think it was too loud. I will probably dine there again because it’s a nice walk past the liberty bell to the theaters.
Tables jammed too close together. Seats with faces of models on them...yuck!!!! ...comes off as very contrived..very Urban Outfitters. The faces on the seats sends an unconscious message that the real people sitting there aren't good enough..I don't like to sit on a Calvin Klein face..music too loud and clublike.Went to Buddakhan a couple years ago..thought the ambience a lot better then!!!..not sure I would eat there again.
We went to buddakan for the first time for my husbands 30th birthday and it was fantastic. We were a little confused on how to order at first but our waiter was awesome and patient and directed us in the right way. The food was incredible. We reccomend the spicy shrimp bou buns and the peppered beef. If you haven't been before, go!
Overall, our experience was above okay, but not great. I scheduled the dinner for my 51st birthday for 6 people. They tried to put us upstairs in a corner? The next table they gave us was literally on the line where food is picked up from the kitchen. Basically the 2 worst tables in the house. When they called to confirm my reservation, I mentioned it was my birthday and we wanted to be in the main dining room and to please choose a good table. Obviously, that did not make an impact. My daughters literally were on fire from the heat of the kitchen through the whole dinner. I am not happy about that. It would have ruined our dinner, had it not been for us deciding not to ask to be moved again and we were going to make the best of it since it was such a special occassion. My daughter had to tell them again it was my birthday, since that also did not make it to our server. The food was really good, the drinks were just okay, and our server was good as well. I have been here several times before and with groups of 6 to 8, and would have rated the restaurant and A in the past. Buddakhan, you were at best, a C+
Went here for the first time for anniversary, the ambiance was very nice and romantic, however it was quite crowded and loud. We were seated quite close to another couple who was talking very loudly unfortunately. The food was delicious though, and the service was great. Overall the only thing that would have made it better was more privacy.
I treated my husband to Buddakan for his birthday and we had a very nice time. He had been to the restaurant once in the past but it was my first time. Our reservation was met quickly and we were escorted to our table. It is dimly lit but creates a beautiful ambiance. Our waitress, Chelsea, was very nice and explained the menu and recommendations. We ordered the chicken and ginger dumplings for our appetizer which were fresh but a little overpriced for 5 dumplings, in my opinion. My husband got the duck breast and I got the pad Thai as an entree. Both were delicious and more than enough to take home. We ordered the Mandarin Fudge Cake for dessert which was extremely chocolatey and rich. The mandarin oranges on top & sorbet cut the richness slightly. With our meals, I had the passion fruit lemonade which is tart and delicious but the amount is small for the price. My husband got the sake flight which he enjoyed. Overall our bill was less than I expected for all that we received. I would definitely go back in the future and I believe my husband enjoyed his birthday meal.
My waitor larry was outstanding and the hostess accomodated my seating from upstairs to downstairs because my 81 year old grandma could not go up the stairs ...it was her her birthday and Budakkan was very accomodating to our needs I recommend this place to everybody.
