About Buddakan - Philadelphia

Stephen Starr’s Buddakan is a spectacular restaurant featuring exotic flavors of modern Asian cuisine with creativity and drama. Bon Appetit notes, "The mostly white space is striking, with a lit-from-within communal table in the middle of the room, a waterfall & a ten-foot, candle-bedecked Buddha. The religious icon watches over hip customers indulging in pan-Asian cuisine that far surpasses the fare usually found at hot spots like this." Newsweek reports, "Design also serves as a signifier for cuisine. You walk into Buddakan, one of the hottest new restaurants in Philadelphia, past a shimmering waterfall & Japanese river stones & you say to yourself, 'ginger-miso everything' even before you see the magnificent 10-foot Buddha dominating the dining room." Named one of “America's Top 50 Restaurants" by Travel & Leisure and 'Top Restaurant for Fun' by Gourmet, Buddakan has become one of the country's most talked about restaurants.

We had a great experience, the excellent food was accompanied by friendly service. Some of out best choices were the interpretations of standard dishes (beef fun chow and beef rice), the difference being the quality of ingredients and flawless preparation. Any one can make an overly complex dish; true excellence is delivering a relatively simple dish at the highest level, and that was achieved.

Dinner was wonderful. There were 4 of us and we ordered everything family style. Crispy calamari salad with sweet miso dressing was wonderful, the small is huge. Had lots of dumplings and dim sum fo appetizers. Wasabi filet, pork, another steak, and the black cod for our meals. So much food we left full.

The food is outstanding and the main reason to go there. The decor is interesting but not the reason to go there. The service was great. I have a shellfish allergy and hey provided me with a special menu. The noise level is unbelievably high and hard to have a conversation with another person. The room is on the cold side.

Food was delicious, no doubt. It was really busy for a Tues evening. Our 2nd time here, ordered 1 app, 1 side, 1 entree, 1 noodles and ended up spending $100, which wouldn't have been an issue had I not substituted all the meat for Tofu. The noodles are $27 with or without the beef, which makes no sense to me (no prices listed on the vegetarian menu)

My friends and I had a delicious lunch in a lovely unique atmosphere. The service was beyond excellent. The dim sum was very appetizing. The neighborhood is pleasant. Near Washington Sq. We were all stuffed with quality food at a good price. Can’t speak highly enough of this restaurant.

This is my favorite restaurant in Philly. I always come here when in town for business. I am Asian and I love the creative blend of seasonings and flavors in all the dishes. The crispy calamari salad was outstanding. The Dumpling Sampler and Pork Belly Buns were really tasty. There was an odd number of us dining, and they adjusted the number of pieces per order so we each could try the items. The Dim Sum Donuts are a must for dessert!

Dinner at Buddakan is not likely to disappoint. We started with the Edamame Dumplings, wife loved I wouldn't reorder. Entree she had Five Spice Duck Breast, I the Pan Seared Sea Bass, both were delicious as were the sides. Everything perfectly cooked and flavorful! Shared the Poached Pear with cardamom ice cream dessert , delicious! Overall experience made even more memorable thanks to our amazing waitress, Chelsea. She was professional, knowledgeable, personable and intent on making sure we enjoyed our evening. Ask for her if she's on! Looking forward to our return visit, next time with friends and family!

This was a tremendously disappointing visit to what was formerly one of my favorite Philly restaurants! I brought a friend from out of town. We were seated at a tiny table wedged behind a pillar. It made service awkward. The place was not packed on a rainy Tuesday night so not sure why we were placed there—two well-groomed professional women. The cocktails were not their usual taste. The food was okay but not the usual excellent preparation. I felt our server rushed us along. Food came out so fast we hardly finished our appetizers. We were never asked if we wanted dessert & just settled on coffee. The place was shutting down @ 9:00. I felt rushed, unattended to & quite let down.

What happened to the service at Buddakan?? We arrived at 930 for a 10pm reservation. Went to the bar for a drink and checked in at 945. At 10:20, checked in again and they had no record of us checking in earlier. Finally received a table and our waitress was HORRIBLE! She was slow, unfriendly, rarely checked on us. Then, we asked for dessert menus. She came back 15 minutes later and brought our check. Never took our dessert order so we just paid and left. Tonight was not indicative of our past experiences but very disappointing nonetheless.

we were seated within minutes of our reservation, right next to a column. There were four of us, and I had to move my seat away from the column, much closer to one of our party, who luckily, was my husband. It felt a bit cramped. The service was great. Our waitress answered all our questions, and our food arrived within a reasonable amount of time. I drank a cosmopolitan and asked for it with Absolut Citron. It was not as sweet as I know a cosmo should be, although I did order two more!! I noticed that the lemon wedge garnish was brown on the edges (could have been reused :-( We loved the kobe satay and vegetable tempura appetizer. The salad was boring and could have used more flavor/dressing. I substituted shrimp for chicken in my pad thai, but the dish was incredibly fishy. We ordered the chocolate mousse dessert, which arrived with sparkly candles for our anniversary. Unfortunately the mousse was quite inedible. The waitress said it had citrus in it, but honestly, it tasted sour and off. All in all, 3 out of 5 stars.

A great upscale dining option in Old City. Gets busy and a bit loud for dinnertime (naturally). Shareable plates encourage a variety of options for the table, and it’s all delicious. Don’t miss the black pepper beef!

This is our second trip to Buddakan, the first being to the Atlantic City location. We were not disappointed as it lived up to the fabulous meal we had had in A.C. The giant Buddha was welcoming, the decor similar and the service spectacular. The service was paced to allow for a leisurely dinner with no signs from the staff that we were taking too long.

We were celebrating our son's 21st birthday so we had sake along with our starter cocktails. We also tried multipale small plates and had two dinner entrees. There was plenty of food for all of us and it was fun to taste the different items on the menu. We took our waiter's advice and had the Tuna Pizza and Crispy Calamari Salad. Both were a study in contracts of flavors, textures and lots of freshness. I highly recommend them. Our son tried the Lobster Egg Roll but it seemed to be like many Chinese egg rolls with lots of cabbage and not enough lobster. As for entrees, I ordered the Wasabi Tuna Tataki, and my husband ordered the chef's special Duck Fried Rice. Both were delicious but I thought the Tuna Tataki was outstanding. Definitely recommend it!

For dessert, we shared a 5-Spice Pumpkin Tart, which tasted like an ultimate Pumpkin Pie. They put a lit sparkler in the tart for our son's birthday and, thankfully, did not sing to him. It was a wonderful family evening that we will not forget.

Lunch at Buddakan was certainly not as good as the dinners we’ve experienced there. First of all, the server was not of the “A” class I expect from a Starr restaurant. She spilt water and did not wipe it up. She served one member of our party a wrong entree and, also, when English Breakfast Tea was unavailable, she substituted Earl Grey tea without consulting. Why not ask or bring a selection of teas, rather than presume? Also, please clean up the coffee cups and saucers where you spilled before serving. The food was, overall, very good, but a couple of items were spicy hot, but not indicated as so on the Bento menu. For example: the shrimp entree and the cabbage salad served with pork bun were rather spicy. Overall, a somewhat disappointing lunch, primarily due to inexperienced service.
