About Buddakan - Philadelphia
Stephen Starr’s Buddakan is a spectacular restaurant featuring exotic flavors of modern Asian cuisine with creativity and drama. Bon Appetit notes, "The mostly white space is striking, with a lit-from-within communal table in the middle of the room, a waterfall & a ten-foot, candle-bedecked Buddha. The religious icon watches over hip customers indulging in pan-Asian cuisine that far surpasses the fare usually found at hot spots like this." Newsweek reports, "Design also serves as a signifier for cuisine. You walk into Buddakan, one of the hottest new restaurants in Philadelphia, past a shimmering waterfall & Japanese river stones & you say to yourself, 'ginger-miso everything' even before you see the magnificent 10-foot Buddha dominating the dining room." Named one of “America's Top 50 Restaurants" by Travel & Leisure and 'Top Restaurant for Fun' by Gourmet, Buddakan has become one of the country's most talked about restaurants.

Buddakan - Philadelphia Ratings and Reviews
Three friends got together for a reunion dinner and Buddakan was the perfect venue. All of us had eaten there previously and wanted to go back. We weren’t disappointed. From the dim sum starter for the table through 3 delicious entrees and the wasabi mashed potatoes and curried cauliflower as sides, we had a great meal!
Celebrated my son's 18 th birthday. We have visited this restaurant on multiple occasions and have been very satisfied with the food and service. This experience was not great! All of our appetizers were delicious. 2 out of 3 entrees were very good. Desert was amazing. Service was blah! Seating was poor. Nothing special.
It is quite loud in there but absolutely everything else was stellar. The dishes were imaginative, beautifully presented, and delicious. The wine list was extensive, and I was pleased that they serve all their sake chilled! Our server, the hostess, and the others who waited on us were polished, pleasant, and went out of their way to offer suggestions. They even put a sparkler on our dessert!
Once again, the food is ‘worth writing home about’ with regard to diverse and appealing menu and excellence of execution from the kitchen. Peking Duck was particularly superb. Waiter Andrew is top drawer. Looking forward to our return, and worth the round trip from Lancaster.
We took our daughter and husband there to celebrate her birthday. The food is always amazing! Service was a little off but it was a Sunday evening...Still good but not the usual
top notch service we usually receive.
The hostess is awesome and always knows the table we love best. Definitely one of our favorite places to dine!
We have been to here several times and are never disappointed. Ingredients are fresh. The Tuna Pizza and the short rib scallion pancake are misnamed, however. Both items had somewhat tough bread-like bottoms, where we were expecting something much more delicate. Delicious nonetheless.
When you open the door, you already know this place is going to be great. Excellent service starts with a nice friendly welcome. The room is fairly dark, but lighting is well focused on the tables. Great open space with more private tables or communal seating in front of the Buddha. What a sight! Food selection is good. The food is great. I am a vegetarian and my wife is not. We both found what we wanted. Service is quick, but not overwhelming. You will get what you need when you need it. Drinks, wine, appetizers, main courses... each worth a trip.
Haven't been to Buddakhan in many years and it is no longer the hot spot that I remember it to be. That said, the Spicy Rock Shrimp Bao Buns and the sea bass were excellent. Some of the other menu items that we sampled were good but not great. We were seated at a round table downstairs and the ambiance was festive and perfect for our large group. The hostess and servers were professional and accommodating without being overbearing. I would return but with lower expectations.
I was entertaining an out of town relative for lunch and I’m glad I chose Buddakan. The bento box lunch is delicious with ample, diverse choices and the price is modest. I highly recommend the bento box. My guest needs gluten free food and yet there were some gluten free choices, there could have been more, but overall it is delicious, high quality and a great value.
We try and come here every time we go to Philly. Tried and true. This time, though, there were issues. The bar was a mess. It took nearly 15 minutes from order to reception of 5 drinks (2 of which were pre-made). That is nuts. After we sat down, our server, Mark was a true professional and understood our table and the menu. We will probably come back, but skip the bar.
Food delicious as always. I live the tuna spring rolls and the tuna pizza. Calamari salad always a favorite. I have an issue with the saki they offer and the pricing. There are no reasonable bottle choices. Nothing under $99. I find that offensive. Their sommelier or liquor buyer could do a better job finding product in the $40 or $50 range.
I️ was really disappointed with this place especially because of the price. The most enjoyable menu item was the dim sum sampler. The main courses lacked flavor. I️ know I️ can get better food in Chinatown for much less so left not going to return. The location is very unique but not worth the cost. The survive was also very slow the entire night ordering and getting the check took about 15-20 minutes each. Would not recommend this place sadly. I️ really wanted to like this!
Dinner was delicious! Buddakan is always good but tonight it was great. They have changed up the menu a bit with some new wonderful items. The thing that just made the night amazing was our waiter, Marc. He was amazing! He was very attentive and made great suggestions that we just loved. We ordered some things we might not have if not for Marc's suggestions. So glad we listened, enjoyed the whole meal. I have had good waiters but Marc was great, he made our whole night.
We had a great experience, the excellent food was accompanied by friendly service. Some of out best choices were the interpretations of standard dishes (beef fun chow and beef rice), the difference being the quality of ingredients and flawless preparation. Any one can make an overly complex dish; true excellence is delivering a relatively simple dish at the highest level, and that was achieved.
