About Buddakan - Philadelphia

Stephen Starr’s Buddakan is a spectacular restaurant featuring exotic flavors of modern Asian cuisine with creativity and drama. Bon Appetit notes, "The mostly white space is striking, with a lit-from-within communal table in the middle of the room, a waterfall & a ten-foot, candle-bedecked Buddha. The religious icon watches over hip customers indulging in pan-Asian cuisine that far surpasses the fare usually found at hot spots like this." Newsweek reports, "Design also serves as a signifier for cuisine. You walk into Buddakan, one of the hottest new restaurants in Philadelphia, past a shimmering waterfall & Japanese river stones & you say to yourself, 'ginger-miso everything' even before you see the magnificent 10-foot Buddha dominating the dining room." Named one of “America's Top 50 Restaurants" by Travel & Leisure and 'Top Restaurant for Fun' by Gourmet, Buddakan has become one of the country's most talked about restaurants.

The Pan Seared Sea Bass and the Dim Sum Doughnuts were exceptional! Other items I tasted were good - not exceptional - but good. The service was great, and the decor was very nice!

Visiting during restaurant week was a bit of a hassle because of the large crowds, but the food was worth the wait. The menu offered a nice selection of what I'm assuming to be customer favorites along with an excellent selection of sake and wine.

Buddakan was amazing. Went for the first time as part of restaurant week and it was so worth it!
Great sized portions and most things are made to share. Dumplings are delicious and the pan seared Bass I had was just falling apart (in a good way).

Staff was really friendly and very attentive. The only complaint I have is that they sat us near the door and the draft from outside was freezing!

Otherwise, I'll be back. Still dreaming of the Pepper Beef now...

being that it was restaurant week...I feel like I was rushed so they can get the table ready for the next reservation. Very crowded, loud, and food was just good...I believe my dining at Buddakan is done.

I went during restaurant week and it was a real bargain. The bubble tea cocktail was delicious and the best bubble tea since I was in Hawaii! The sea bass was perfectly cooked and the chocolate tart divine. Would go back with a larger group without food issues so plates could be shared - everything we ordered was definitely large enough for sharing. But don’t share the chocolate tart - keep it all for yourself. And if you don’t like Asian food, don’t worry. The food was Asian-inspired, with just a hint of Asian flavors.

We decided to have a girls' night at Buddakan in downtown Philadelphia as part of restaurant week. We sat at the large table in front of the Buddha statue. Good service. Some dishes were better than others. We especially enjoyed the Caesar salad, fish and beef entrees and of course desserts. Would come here again in a heartbeat.

It's always a treat to be at Buddakan during restaurant week -- there's no stinting on quantity, quality, and the staff couldn't be nicer. Our waiter -- a new dad with a two-week old at home -- was a delight. Though must of us go to Buddakan at other times of the year, one group of us has made a tradition of a restaurant week lunch. Thank them for us.

Delicious food in a trendy atmosphere, perfect for a date night or with a group of friends. The meal was amazing for the restaurant week special, but I’d return to pay full price. Mildly disappointed by the “Zen-gria”, but otherwise 5 stars all around. The Dip Sum dumplings were especially fun, and whimsically plated.

Went for restaurant week. The food was great; I ordered the sea bass. My bf on the other hand was not so pleased with his beef teriyaki selection. There was not much meat and much more unidentifiable food items in the dish.

Food was OK and we were kind of underwhelmed considering the reputation and the cost. Also, we were put off by the $4 each green tea. Server was great.

I went there with my husband during the restaurant week for lunch on Monday (Martin Luther King’s Day). We made reservation so there was no waiting time. Th front desk and coat-check were nice, but the lady lead us to the seat looked very unhappy and angry...
The foods were pretty good and our server was pretty friendly.
Overall it was a nice experience and highly recommended to check it out during the restaurant week. It would be nicer to go there at night!

The food was ok: for example, the Pad Thai was harder than what is usually served at other places. I think they tried too hard for the Asian culture vibe. The music did not go with the decor which was a bit amusing; however, overall it was ok. Not the best Asian cuisine and certainly not the worst.

Appetizers and drinks were great. The entrees are a little overpriced. We had an eventful time. Someone slipped on a step (it was raining that night) and EMT arrived during our night. We also saw a few celebrities.

Overall disappointing- we were seated near the front door, which had a front hall area to help block the wind but with the cold temperatures we still had artic blasts of air coming our way here and there. We had a small table by some steps which our waiter stood on often and so was like towering over us. The dumplings were good, just not a wow. Actually the edamame dumplings were the best. We sent the lobster egg roll back due to it not being cooked enough- like the wrapper was still doughy and the inside was clunky and not impressive at all. We had to almost argue with our waiter that we STILL wanted the crab sticky rice- once he was convinced that we still wanted an actually entree or side to share , I was not impressed. I know it was just sticky rice- but not much flavor going on...no ginger, garlic, scallion, Mirin...just what seemed to me like canned claw meat on some slightly sweet soy sauced rice. I had two cocktails which were VERY good, But for my 30th birthday I sure wish I had picked somewhere else.
