About Buddakan - Philadelphia

Stephen Starr’s Buddakan is a spectacular restaurant featuring exotic flavors of modern Asian cuisine with creativity and drama. Bon Appetit notes, "The mostly white space is striking, with a lit-from-within communal table in the middle of the room, a waterfall & a ten-foot, candle-bedecked Buddha. The religious icon watches over hip customers indulging in pan-Asian cuisine that far surpasses the fare usually found at hot spots like this." Newsweek reports, "Design also serves as a signifier for cuisine. You walk into Buddakan, one of the hottest new restaurants in Philadelphia, past a shimmering waterfall & Japanese river stones & you say to yourself, 'ginger-miso everything' even before you see the magnificent 10-foot Buddha dominating the dining room." Named one of “America's Top 50 Restaurants" by Travel & Leisure and 'Top Restaurant for Fun' by Gourmet, Buddakan has become one of the country's most talked about restaurants.

Delicious food in a trendy atmosphere, perfect for a date night or with a group of friends. The meal was amazing for the restaurant week special, but I’d return to pay full price. Mildly disappointed by the “Zen-gria”, but otherwise 5 stars all around. The Dip Sum dumplings were especially fun, and whimsically plated.

Went for restaurant week. The food was great; I ordered the sea bass. My bf on the other hand was not so pleased with his beef teriyaki selection. There was not much meat and much more unidentifiable food items in the dish.

Food was OK and we were kind of underwhelmed considering the reputation and the cost. Also, we were put off by the $4 each green tea. Server was great.

I went there with my husband during the restaurant week for lunch on Monday (Martin Luther King’s Day). We made reservation so there was no waiting time. Th front desk and coat-check were nice, but the lady lead us to the seat looked very unhappy and angry...
The foods were pretty good and our server was pretty friendly.
Overall it was a nice experience and highly recommended to check it out during the restaurant week. It would be nicer to go there at night!

The food was ok: for example, the Pad Thai was harder than what is usually served at other places. I think they tried too hard for the Asian culture vibe. The music did not go with the decor which was a bit amusing; however, overall it was ok. Not the best Asian cuisine and certainly not the worst.

Very bad service. Food was delayed and the chair had bread and sugar crumbles from previous customers.

Unimpressed by the food and the service. I had high hopes for a special evening out but found that the entire experience was lackluster. I won't be going back.

Appetizers and drinks were great. The entrees are a little overpriced. We had an eventful time. Someone slipped on a step (it was raining that night) and EMT arrived during our night. We also saw a few celebrities.

Overall disappointing- we were seated near the front door, which had a front hall area to help block the wind but with the cold temperatures we still had artic blasts of air coming our way here and there. We had a small table by some steps which our waiter stood on often and so was like towering over us. The dumplings were good, just not a wow. Actually the edamame dumplings were the best. We sent the lobster egg roll back due to it not being cooked enough- like the wrapper was still doughy and the inside was clunky and not impressive at all. We had to almost argue with our waiter that we STILL wanted the crab sticky rice- once he was convinced that we still wanted an actually entree or side to share , I was not impressed. I know it was just sticky rice- but not much flavor going on...no ginger, garlic, scallion, Mirin...just what seemed to me like canned claw meat on some slightly sweet soy sauced rice. I had two cocktails which were VERY good, But for my 30th birthday I sure wish I had picked somewhere else.

One of our favorite places to eat.. Asian Caesar Salad perfect .. the duck is tender and almost like filet .. lobster fried rice had chunkx of lobster .. the dim sum donuts are the end to a perfect meal .. our waiter was attentive without being intrusive and gave great service

My wife and I went there for our one year anniversary. The atmosphere was really fun and the food was amazing, a bit pricy but well worth it. Our server, Mark, was spot on and very attentive. Offered his opinion on the menu and shared his favorites. Make sure you get the dim sum donuts for desert. Easy valet service and coat check made everything even easier and convenient. Would definitely go back to try some of the other entrees.

We had dinner here while visiting Olde City. The ambiance is cool, and the the food was very good. I was seated along an isle and was bumped by patrons and waiters several times during my dinner. The Chilean Sea Bass was served a tad underdone for my liking, and the service was good but just a little slow.

Entire staff was professional and accommodating given our last minute change in party size. We had several specialty cocktails which were interesting twist, e.g. Geaux East - like Sazerac with an herb essence - very tasty. Dumplings and Edamame great to share. Filet is our favorite - go for the double. Beignets are the favorite dessert - get a few orders. Service was attentive and very hospitable to all in our party.

We’ve been dining at Buddakan since it opened in 1998 and have never been disappointed but our New Years Eve dinner was by far the very best experience we’ve ever had there! The atmosphere was dynamic, the crowd was eclectic, the service and cuisine were on point and there were absolutely no flaws! The perfect evening!

I have to say I was very disappointed. I love this restaurant and I usually love the food but on Saturday December 30, 2017 it made a liar out of me. I wanted to take a friend of mine out for his birthday and since I brag about Buddakan being my favorite restaurant I took him here.I was so disappointed and surprised that the house salad that I order along with the crab sticky rice was so salty and oily I could not taste the food so therefore I didn’t eat it. I didn’t return it because I didn’t want to ruin my friend birthday but I was so disappointed and I save my whole appetite for that evening because I knew I was in for a treat and I knew it would be a great portion and on top of that expensive that I saved my appetite however I went to Wawa for a sandwich. So I just wanted to let you know I was so disappointed in Buddakan.

Food was okay but the service was horrible. Asked for the waiters recommendation for something Spicy and he just would recommend whatever is the most expensive on the menu. Took 15 min to get a drink menu. Maybe I just over hyped this place.

 (New York Area)·Dined on December 29, 2017

Initially we were seated at a table near the front door where there was a lot of traffic as well as cold air every time someone open the door. We requested a different table and the hostess moved us to the back near the bathroom. And this treatment was with a reservation for two that we were in time for!! We had three appetizers , two main courses and two speciality cocktails . None of the dishes were memorable - dumplings and salad were damp and mushy, scallion pancake was hard and did not seem to have scallions . Drinks were over iced

Only decent part of the evening was the attentive service of the waiter.

Not sure what all the hype is about — Philly has so many better restaurant experiences so this one can be missed.
