Buck's Fishing & Camping Ratings and Reviews
The experience was disappointing. We had a child w/us who always gets a small plate of plain pasta no matter whether a simple restaurant or fancy. But even though there was a pasta dish on the menu, we were told we could not have a small dish of plain pasta. Also, the spaghetti squash was bland so we requested a small aerving of marinara sauce and was told that there wasn't any.
The roasted chicken was swimming in butter. The shrimp w/rice was too salty.
Very pleasant setting and service. Delicious food although some dishes more interesting than others: Fine roasted carrot appetizer; Caesar salad would benefit from additional anchovies; excellent distinctive scallops; pulled lamb shoulder on kale and fettuccine deserves stronger seasoning. Wine list has ample choices by origin, style and price.
We were visiting DC and visited on Alice Waters recommendation.
The food was delicious. The waitress was lovely although she did not go over the menu or ask if we had any questions. Not much effort in her part was given.
I would visit again as well as recommend.
Hands down my favorite part of the meal was the sundae I had for dessert. It is big enough to share with one other person. The ice cream and fudge were good, but what took it to great was the chocolate hazelnut chip which reminded me of a really thin peppermint bark (only hazelnut).
My steak and my husband's fish were both delicious as well. As were the deviled eggs we had as an appetizer. The waiter was nice and did a great job especially considering it was busy for the holidays.
Onion rings and pimento cheese were really good. Steak was good but fries were room temperature and all of them were short, must have gotten the final few of a batch. The carrot cake was excellent. The apple crisp was just average. My biggest complaint was the fries. Not sure how they made past final inspection from the kitchen.
This was our first time trying Buck's and I'm glad we did! Scallops were delicious and I couldn't eat all five! Served on a bed of delicious polenta and wood grilled veggies. Nice wine selections too. Comfy atmosphere, makes you almost think your in the Village or perhaps Brooklyn. Will def be back to try other menu items.
Although the ambiance is great, we were VERY disappointed with our meal at Buck's. We started with wings that were seasoned with a very odd/bad tasting mix of herbs. I couldn't figure out what they were, but overall the mixture tasted like a bad combination of powdered (rather than fresh) seasonings. Despite being hungry, I could not finish my portion. My husband and I both ordered the hamburger - it was approximately the size of a McDonald's (small) hamburger served on a stale room-temperature sesame bun - for a whopping $15. We also had a side of brussel sprouts that were adequate but very basic and boring; roasted in olive oil, but otherwise plain and uninspiring. We do not plan to return.
Buck's is a warm atmosphere with friendly service and great food. We split a iceberg wedge salad and the onion rings. The onion rings were in a really light batter -- almost like Panko style/Tempura -- and tasted delicious. I had the sea scallops over a creamy polenta. They were excellent. My wife had a burger, which she liked a lot. For dessert, we shared an apple crisp. Yum.
Buck's is one of my favorite DC restaurants. The food is always reliable and creative. I had big, juicy scallops on top of polenta with wild mushrooms. Excellent. The decor and atmosphere add to the ambiance. It is one of the few places we can go with friends and are able to have a conversation that everyone can hear. Highly recommended.
We celebrated my father's birthday at Buck's and they honored my request for a nice table. The staff was polite and friendly. The food is wonderful and comes in just the right amount - not too little nor too much food. We were glad that we could make reservations and were seated immediately, which is particularly helpful now that I have to pay a babysitter for my infant son. Our food came promptly and the waiter cared for us well without hovering. We enjoyed our meal, then strolled down to Politics & Prose to look at books, and then made our way back home. What a lovely evening!
Buck's is always a fun getaway for us, even though we only live about 15 minutes away. The food is great. The ambiance is unique. It's like a respite from everyday city life just a few steps off of Connecticut Avenue. From the moment you enter the instantly calming atmosphere to the very last bite of delicious food...we love everything about Buck's Fishing & Camping.
We went with friends for a casual bite after an event at Politics & Prose, and it was a delightful evening. We were unsure about the size of our group until the last minute but they were extremely accommodating - great food, nice wine, a really nice time all around.
The food and cocktails are consistently delicious. The service was fine, but not up to usual standards. I was surprised that in spite of a fly in our cocktail and our side dish arriving well after entree, nothing was removed from our bill. I guess I should be louder.
Have been meaning to go to Buck's for years. So glad we tried it. Onion rings were a crisp and delicious start. I had the softshell crab, which was great, and my husband enjoyed the chicken. Our friends had the fish tacos and scallops, which they also really liked. Our coffee and sundaes made with gelato were delicious. The place is and very laid back. Definitely will return!
We had the grilled pork chop and soft shell crabs. The pork chop was actually juicy and very tasty. The sauce on the soft shell crab was amazing but I tasted more sauce than crab. My husband disagreed. The cocktails were great. The servers were friendly and attentive without being intrusive. Overall a great dining experience. .
We came to visit my son at American University for the first time and take him out with my husband for his 50th, so a special night and thought it would be a fun place to go. However, we got there 10 minutes early before their first seating and the woman who sat us was rude and acted as if we were bothering her and had inconvenienced her and her staff. We almost left at that point but decided to stay and try it. The waiter was friendly and food was fine, but was disappointing to start out what was suppose to be a celebratory night on such a sour note. Never quite shook that feeling. Will not go back.
My wife and I were very much looking forward to an evening out at the restaurant in our neighborhood, but alas, we were very disappointed. It took something along the lines of 15 minutes before our waitperson showed up, and although she was charming, she forgot to put in our appetizer order, which we didn't learn until maybe another 15 minutes had passed. At that point we also wanted to skip the salad, so we just went ahead and ordered our steak. Sure, it was a very nice steak, but it also took a long time and the evening was so spoiled by then we just took it to go. No one really apologized or tried to make us feel better about out experience even though we tried to let them know. Moreover, I sent an email to Bucks directly that night and haven't heard back three days later. We very much love having good, locally-owned restaurants in our neighborhood, so it was a shame that it was so disappointing.
