A cute and cozy restaurant with unique decor and tasty food but marred by a terrible server who seemed on the brink of falling asleep or passing out.
Sadly, in spite of the atmosphere, not place to linger. By 10pm on a Saturday evening the staff was stacking things and tidying up.
I went to Buck's for dinner with friends with my bachelorette party. The food and ambiance were delightful, and the service was superb. The owner was so friendly and helpful and welcoming with us. This is such a special hidden gem in DC.
Kind of perfect!
Professional service in a pleasant setting and excellent food at a reasonable price. You
Very helpful staff. Good choices on the menu. I had the halibut. We were able to stay for a long time and catch up with friends. No pressure to leave.
The service was attentive, and everything we ordered came quickly. However, our main courses arrived while we were still enjoying the appetizer, and the bill arrived just as we started our dessert. This made us feel that we were being rushed out the door to turn over the table.
The food was delicious! The fried oysters were perfectly done, crisp outside and soft inside. My husband liked his small steak and I loved my scallops with grits, carrots, and onions. We both enjoyed and shared the charred (grilled) chard. Finally, we liked the fresh lemon flavor of the lemon sorbet we had for dessert.
Really enjoy the food and wine. Wonderful ambiance for date night or a larger group.
Always a real treat. Food is delicious, waiters a little less than seamless, but ambiance was perfect and visiting friends loved it. Will be back!
Great and refreshing.
Reliable. Enjoyable. Local.
Welcoming, festive and good food. The flower arrangements are spectacular too.
It was the perfect table for our sixsome of family. We could all hear each other and celebrate the day. Wonderful.
Had a fairly early reservation (6pm) and the place was about 25% full. The service was almost too fast for the first part of our meal. When it filled up, the service slowed to a bit on the slow side. The food was really good. The mini corn dog appetizer was a step above a state fair corn dog in quality - though that may not be what one is looking for in a corn dog. :) The short ribs were excellent. They had a crusty glaze on the outside and were fully rendered inside; you could cut them without a knife. We shared two desserts, the chocolate cake and apple cobbler. Weirdly, they were both a whole level better when you ate one with the other's accompanying add-on (eating the cake's whip cream with the cobbler, and the cobbler's vanilla ice cream with the cake). Coffee was excellent.
Five of us met for an early (5:00) dinner. We were seated at a corner table in the back so conversation was easy. Service was relaxed because that's what we wanted: we hadn't seen each other in a while and had some catching up to do. Onion rings were fabulous with a light, tempura-like batter. Burgers were very tasty. I'd highly recommend Buck's for a casual lunch or dinner.
The ambiance at Bucks is always so lovely. To add to that there were fresh flowers everywhere. The place looked so beautiful and spring like. It was such a treat. The food was outstanding, as usual. We are crazy about Bucks.
Very ordinary dishes. Nice but absolutely overpriced.
12$ for a starter Cesar salad. That was literally a whole unchopped romaine lettuce, with dressing and 2 anchovies places on top.
Dinner for 2 without drinks for 90$. VERY poor value.
For my husband’s birthday, we came on an “expedition” from Annapolis, based on reviews we had seen in the WaPo and elsewhere. We were not disappointed and enjoyed every course. The tender biscuits and delicate onion rings set the standard for every dish afterwards. High quality, perfectly prepared, attractively presented - and everything just tasted great. Even though the place quickly filled up, we never felt rushed, and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. We all commented if we lived near there, it would be a “neighborhood gem” and regular place to go. Wait staff was cordial and attentive.
This is just a gem of a restaurant. The staff is friendly and professional. It has great ambiance with a comfortable vibe. The menu is approachable, but the food is expertly prepared. Great wine / beer / cocktails too. And the chocolate cake is incredible. Can't wait to go back.
Food great, service great, price OK, but noise almost unbearable--difficult for three people to have a conversation.
I always enjoy Buck's. This time the table shared their onion rings-excellent and light! The pork chop and chocolate cake are not to be missed.
Lovely warm ambiance. Good selection of entrees but apps need more interesting options. Reasonable wine list.
We arrived early and had a delicious quiet meal. Buck's is a little pricier than other neighborhood restaurants, but the service and ambience were great.
Buck’s is one of my favorite restaurants. It is indeed a neighborhood gem.
The restaurant is charming and cozy and the service was great. Good cocktails, and my husband and I really enjoyed our salads—beet and Caesar. The beet salad with dill chèvre was absolutely delicious. Our friends enjoyed their entrees. Although the fish and chips was just good, not great, the steak/frites were reportedly very good. I had blackened rockfish and it was completely over cooked—very dry and with little sauce to help. The sorghum was also not very good, although the pickled cabbage slaw was good. My husband enjoyed his scallops but not the sauce they were served with. Both desserts, the chocolate cake and the apple cobbler, were excellent. A pleasant overall experience, but I should have paid more attention to the waiter when he tried to steer me to the meat section of the menu.
We really enjoy Buck's! We brought our friends and they had never been to Buck's and they loved it, too. The food was very good and we decided to get the chocolate cake based on Tom Sietsema's review in Friday's Post: it was delicious! The manager was great and we had wonderful evening.
We enjoyed a low key dinner with friends and everything was delicious. Service was prompt and friendly. The Manhattan was generous and perfect. The short ribs were moist, flavorful, and with the polenta a rich and satisfying dinner on a cold night out. Others had the chicken and cleaned their plates. I Love the atmosphere at Bucks all the time - it is festive, yet low key. I like it when the lights are not too bright, and this place gets it exactly right. Intimate, yet fun. So glad Bucks is in my neighborhood.
Buck’s has quickly become our favorite neighborhood place. The service, food quality and overall experience is fantastic. It is a casual place that is not overly pretentious... but man is the food great. We keep coming back and will continue into the future. On last visit I had the “Big” steak and my husband had the wood fire grilled lobster. Both were fantastic.
Good service and great food. Menu is very interesting.
Had dinner with friends really great food enjoyable atmosphere wonderful wine
Great experience, good food. Nice neighborhood spot with great service.
Wonderful, beautifully spiced meat, in a lovely ambiance and friendly service.
We've been here a number of times, and always love it. The ambience is so inviting -- lots of candles, wood, and a general rustic, comfy feel. And the food is terrific and a good value. We love the hangar steak, and the wood-grilled sides. On our latest visit two of us enjoyed seafood options as well. One had the scallops and another the rockfish. Location on the same block as Politics and Prose, the best independent bookstore anywhere, is a plus as well.
Always one of my favorites...the cozy, comfortable interior is a wonderful accompaniment to the consistently delicious food and drinks.
Wouldn't take our Opentable Dining Points reward, after we'd gone through the trouble to print it and bring it, and don't know if we can get the points back to use somewhere else. It's one of our favorite neighborhood places-- the food is solid and the ambiance very nice-- but the manager's attitude of "well we don't know how to use those" made us feel unwelcome, especially when it looks like they work just like a Mastercard cash card. To be fair, the manager did offer to give us a gift card if we couldn't get the rewards points refunded at Opentable, but why not just know how to take them in the first place?
Steaks were very disappointing
The long table and linen curtains create an atmosphere of an African safari. The service was excellent and the food is always quite good. A gem of a spot.
I am hoping we just caught the restaurant on a bad night (weeknight, late January) but the service was horrible and very slow. Our server did nothing to acknowledge that the kitchen may be backed up and just ignored us until we asked about the status of our meal. It took about 45 minutes for our entrees to be delivered. We did not order an appetizer. The manager (?) also did not provide us with any assurance that our meal would be delivered soon, or that anything would be provided at a discount or comped. I had been to the restaurant several months earlier and had a lovely meal with excellent service.
The family walked over to Buck’s for a lovely dinner on the weekend. Everything hit the mark. Great scallops, steak that was rare as requested (strangely difficult outcome to experience in DC). Service was relaxed and lovely, just right attentiveness and we were not rushed at the end (again, sadly rare in DC). All good.
Another delicious meal at Buck’s! We had some issues with getting a table at first and our food took 45 minutes to arrive but they were very nice about it. Will definitely return.
