Food was good. Seems many others there really enjoyed the wine selections! I kept seeing glass after glass being served. Would go again. Specifically for the grilled veggies with Quinoa. It was very tasty.

I chose Buck's for a birthday celebration in. honor of our son in law based on strong recommendations of WaPost food critic Tom Sietsema. We were disappointed. My fried oyster appetizer was good, but I was very disappointed with my main entry, the brioled pork chop. I felt it was undercooked and, thus, flavorless. Pork chops need to be well done to bring out the full flavor. My wife's halibut was blah: halibut is generally a bland fish and needs a lot of seasoning to spruce it up; we both felt Buck's failed here. I got no reaction from my son-in-law to the hamburger he ordered, but the fries he shared with me were very good.

Buck's is located in a row of mostly old and drab shops on upper Connecticut Ave. There is parking to the rear if you arrive early enough. The Buck's website suggest customers cut through Comet Ping Pong two doors down to reach the Buck's front entrance without having to walk around the block. The visual experience of the Comet Ping Pong may not be the best preparation for an evening at Buck's but it is worthwhile to experience a site that acquired some notoriety due to a an incident that occurred after the 2016 elections.

Pleasant setting for a casual meal. Fried oysters and heirloom tomato salad were superb. Service a bit perfunctory, but reasonable.

Buck’s is an underrated gem! Charming ambiance, incredible food, good (if slightly pricey) drinks. I love bringing loved ones here - always a delightful and delicious time.

Went for a birthday dinner (my 70th) with dear friends and had an amazing time.

In addition to a delicious meal and great wines (we ordered softshell crabs served over a summer succotash, side orders of the chard and Caesar salad, as well as hot wings and the onion rings starter), we had a wonderful waiter, who had just the right balance of friendliness and efficiency. He recognized that we wanted time to visit and did not rush us. He and the other staff member made certain that we had everything we needed.

The food was fresh and a great value for the price.  The chef nailed the soft shells and the chard perfectly. They even surprised us with complimentary glasses of champagne when we arrived. We loved everything and are looking forward to returning.  It’s a great place!

Once again THANK YOU SO MUCH for everything!  We will be back for sure!!

I'd been trying to get to Buck's for some time, finally made reservations on Sat. 9/14/19 to celebrate my birthday with 2 other couples. Overall, it was ok. The food was very good, the menu was very good but the cocktails were off the mark. Good wine list. Our tab was $550 with dinner, 2 appetizers, 2 bottles of wine and maybe 4 cocktails. Lively place. We may try it again.

Went to Buck’s for my wedding anniversary at 8:15 on a Friday night. The hostess seated us outside, which was a score since it was full to the brim and buzzing loud inside. The halibut, pork chop and iceberg wedge were delicious. The server was efficient, if lacking in any personal touch. I found it strange no mention of our anniversary, in spite of mentioning that in our reservation. It is a sweet spot, but felt like it was missing some kind of warmth that I imagined it might have.

I was looking forward to trying this restaurant for such a long time, and was finally able to take my father. While the lighting is lovely and overall ambiance is nice, we were, sadly, underwhelmed by the food and the service was very very slow. With such simple "treats" for the table, we were expecting them to be superb but they were disappointing. The steaks were delicious but too salty. Their drink menu is limited. For the price, we expected much more.

I'm vegetarian and I was disappointed. Why, you might ask, did I go there in the first place, and did I not read the meat-and-fish-heavy menu beforehand? Well, I did, but I also read Tom Sietsima's glowing review. While the chocolate cake was certainly marvelous, everything else was forgettable. The one vegetarian entree (quinoa bowl) was just about okay— the roasted chard was smoky but the squash tasted rather flat and the quinoa was pretty bland (yes quinoa usually *is* bland, which is why I'd expect a chef to do more with it). When I asked whether they had any vegan protein alternative to the egg, the server offered a pretty blunt "no" (surely the chef has heard of lentils, chickpeas, tofu, nuts, tempeh etc. if they've heard of quinoa). The fried green tomatoes were mediocre --the tomatoes lacked flavor, the coating was uninspired, and the price ($16 for a plate with two slices) sort of audacious. They boast about their lack of "pretense"- I'd rather they actually pretended to care about vegetarians.

My wife and I always split the big steak, and it is always excellent. The wedge salad is our standard against which to measure everyone else’s, usually to their detriment.

I thought Buck's was a little off its game. Two of us ordered steak. Although the steak was tasty it was overcooked (I had ordered medium rare and the meat was cooked to medium). I suggested to the waiter that the meat was overdone but he was disinclined to take it back. I had also asked for my salad with dressing on the side but the dressing came on the salad (which was corrected). The friends we were dining with both had the halibut and said it was just average. The peach tart dessert was not fresh or particularly tasty. The wait staff also completely messed up the check.

Ugh! Four of us dined here, choosing to sit outside as the inside was quite noisy. However, with the traffic noise, it wasn’t much better outside. 2 of us ordered halibut which was fine. 1 ordered a small steak & 1 ordered a hamburger....both over cooked. BUT...then we got the bill.....$1 up charge for a small bit of tartar sauce 1 of us ordered, and a $2 up charge for my requested veggie substitution. Now it’s not the $3 that matters but the fact that the waiter never mentioned the up charges, nor were they listed anywhere on the menu. Makes me wonder what other up charges they foist on unsuspecting diners. If you go here, BEWARE of substitution charges. Ask what up charges there might be. There are so many restaurants to choose from that I won’t be returning here because of their “surprises” on the bill.

It wasn't worth the $180 we spent with 4 people. I had a bacon cheese burger that was dry and unsatisfying. My wife and daughter had fish and chips. My daughter didn't finish her because the fish was soggy and the portions of fish were small. We had corn dogs for appetizers that were pretty bland, and at 3 for $9 was way over priced. I will say the french fries were really good but that's about it.

Three of us had the halibut for a main course and it was overcooked. Maybe we should have said something but we were a party of six engrossed in conversation so we kind of let it slip. One friend said she could hardly eat it. My husband's pork chop was very good and he loved the wedge salad, though I thought it was overdressed. The decaf coffee was excellent, hard to find.

A great dining experience! Service was warm and welcoming, and prompt. Great selection on the menu. The pimento cheese appetizer was a favorite, as well as the fresh baked biscuits. Halibut with zucchini mash was melt-in-your-mouth delicious. I am looking forward to coming back soon!

Large steak, so I'm told, was the best ever. The small steak looked really small -- it wasn't my order. But we probably waited an hour to get any food served at all. It would have been very helpful to have waiter tell us the wait would be that long. We would have ordered some appetizers. Salads were good but quite small for the price. Broccoli slaw is amazing - charred taste and tasty dressing. Chocolate cake with whipped cream was good, not great.

I thought that after securing reservations for 2 at 6pm on a Saturday we would procure a nice table. Instead, the coupe ahead of us, with no reservations, was offered a middle window table. We were offered the communal table or a small table by the window in the corner near the door. At our cramped table, we waited for a waitress. The lucky couple ahead of us received bread and was giving their order, while we were getting our water glasses filled. I guess that you could say that our service was slow. We finally got bread just before our appetizer was delivered. The onion rings were inconsistently cooked, the pork chop was good, abet, being smaller than I remember. The large steak was fine. This, being our second visit, was not a fondly remembered as the first. I suspect that we will try again, hoping for better service, a nicer table and larger portions.
