Steakhouse
Welcome to a taste of history!

Denver’s original steakhouse, The Buckhorn Exchange is located in the city’s oldest neighborhood, just 5-minutes from downtown Denver -- with a light-rail stop right across the street. This National Historic Landmark and Western Museum has been serving the finest in Old West fare since 1893.

Prime grade beef steaks, buffalo prime rib, elk, salmon, quail, game hen, and succulent baby-back pork ribs are just some of the marvelous offerings on the Buckhorn menu. Exotic appetizers such as alligator tail and buffalo sausage are available, and no dinner is complete without the house specialty, Rocky Mountain Oysters.

For lunch we serve up a lighter fare including our renowned Grandma Fanny’s pot roast sandwich, enormous beef and buffalo burgers and more!

There is no better place to bring out of town guests for a Colorado dining experience. The food is spectacular and unlike steakhouses that add on for salads and sides, they are included with entrees. Buckhorn, please don't ever change!

Came to Denver for work and was originally looking for steakhouses when I found Buckhorn Exchange. When I saw the variety of game on the menu, I changed my mind and knew I had to try some buffalo. I got the 12oz buffalo prime rib (blackened) medium rare and it was one of the best meats I’ve ever had. The server was awesome and the environment was great. I’ll be going back before my trip ends for sure. Highly recommend.

It's a once in a lifetime experience because you'd really only want to do it once. The food is wildly overpriced for how good it is and the service is slow. The ambiance really makes up for it though, all the wild west stuff is so cool. And they have the first liquor license in Denver right behind the bar. If I had to do it again, I'd just order a bunch of appetizers (rocky mountain oysters and fried alligator looked good) and skip the extremely expensive main plates that really were not worth it.

Really fun, delicious and unique experience. Would just have loved the food to have been a bit hotter. Flavors were excellent, meat incredibly tender and the fact that the restaurant has existed so long in the same space is novel. A Denver tradition for sure!

Meat-eaters of all kinds will love this place. My three-generation family of 7 tried a bit of everything. The Buffalo ribeye was excellent. Elk tenderloin was moist and the texture was smooth. The quail/duck/game hen combo was properly cooked and tasty. We sampled gator tail and the RM oysters just to say we'd tried it ... probably won't again, but the horseradish sauce made them palatable. Ambiance was an excellent tour of late 19th C./early 20th C. frontier Americana. Come with a fat wallet. Our kids ordered from the adult menu, two adults drank only water, we got appetizers and desserts for the table. Bill with slightly above 20% tip was just over 700 USD. We're not likely to do this often except for special occasions (this was a 50th Anniversary dinner).

Had the special which was a Bison and Elk combination. Have been to the Buckhorn Exchange a few times over the years. I enjoyed the dinner overall, we ordered three types of appetizers and i wasn't that impressed w/ the size portions for the price and two of the appetizers were not what i would have called "hot" out of the fryer which they should have been. That was the Alligator bites and the Fried Artichokes. There is never ANY excuse for warm food vs. hot food.

Atmosphere is great. Elk, bison, and beef are outstanding. Salmon special not good. A little fishy, the crab on top was grey and a little fishy. Asparagus cooked perfectly. Quail was a little salty. Drinks good but pricey. Service couldn't be better. Never had to wait for anything. I'm ok with spending more at Buckhorn Exchange because overhead must be very high and I don't want them to close. I hope they are around for another hundred years.

Re service was exceptional, the place is very interesting with all the hunting trophies and memorabilia. We ordered one of the specials the 24 oz Tomahawk Waygu for dinner two and were assured that it was Japanese Wagyu not American roses. were disappointed in the quality as it had a lot of fat and much more gristle than acceptable. I would say it was only 24oz because of the huge bone attached. The calamari special was very good, but then mixed eat tips appetizer although tasty had too many gristly pieces. One member of our party said the lamb chops were over cooked and difficult to chew. But, our Other two in the party loved the elk chops. This was our second trip to this establishment and disappointing. Considering the comments about the Tomahawk Wagyu above it was definitely overpriced. But, the prices for the remaining meals were reasonable.

While our family made the best of trying some adventurous proteins and enjoying time together, overall the experience was pretty disappointing, especially given the outrageous menu prices for small, overcooked portions lacking any attempt at presentation. Our server was pretty disinterested, inattentive rude to us and rushed. Assistant servers were very friendly and helpful, but our waitress was a disappointment. We realized that we probably fell for a bit of a tourist trap gimmick restaurant… I don’t recommend it for anyone else.

The Buckhorn Exchange is the quintessential Denver Dining Experience. It is the oldest licensed Tavern in Colorado. It has great food. My personal favorite is the Bison Rib-eye Steaks, with the Garlic Mash Potatoes. I started with the Beer-Cheese Soup which was fabulous. But be warned the portions are large, so feel free to ask for to-go boxes. I always take out-of-town visitors to eat there, and introduce them to the Rocky Mountain Oysters!

We have been wanting to dine at the Buckhorn Exchange for several years now and finally made it! The ambience and history is amazing and the restaurant is very popular! Unfortunately, we had a server with no personality and no interest in serving us. We were a table of six adult family members and our grown children had been there before. They were looking forward to hearing some stories and getting a tour. They even asked the waitress if she could tell us about the building or the taxidermy. Nope. She didn’t want to be bothered. Very disappointing. So when the bill arrived with gratuity added due to our table of 6, she got a $95 dollar tip. She did not deserve a tip let alone $90+ dollars. I hope that Buckhorn sees this review and makes things right. This was a special occasion and she rained on our parade.
