An absolute disaster. Arrived at 8:35 for an 8:30 reservation because we arrived at the listed address on King Street and there was no indication anywhere that the entrance was half a block up the side street. Told that our table was just being prepared and asked to wait at a stand up bar so that we could be hustled for drinks, and of course we were positioned 10 feet away from our already ready and waiting table. When my wife sat on here chair it was extremely wobbly and it took 3 waiter visits till we finally told them to just exchange it with another. Noise level was excruciating.
No question that the quality of ingredients is extremely high, and when we had prepared dishes they were well prepared. We had a good plate of salumi with a few cheeses added, then a $50 plate of a very good gnocchi with truffles, then waited another 40 minutes for the other pasta dish that we had ordered which was the disaster of the night. It was described on the menu as special pasta made in Sardegna in a lamb broth with lamb neck, cheese and a special olive oil. It was assembled in front of us and turned out to be basically an Italian Ramen soup bowl. They placed the large bowl of soup in the middle of the table, and gave us serving utensils and two plates! to eat it off of. Ridiculous and a $48 bowl of soup. Overly pretentious and they think they are lot mor about hip and hype that a great dining experience. We high tailed it straight out after that, foregoing coffee and dessert, 2 1/2 hours was more than we could stand
Certainly the best Italian meal we have ever experienced. Right from the moment we were greeted at reception with polish and open friendliness to the moment our waiter asked us to wait because the Chef wished to speak to us before we left.
An astonishing experience really.
Entirely inconceivable why this restaurant has a cult following. Awful ambience, ceiling has black soot on it, walls have hideous black panels, chairs and restaurant are as though one is in a barn. The highlight was after we had the cheers plate and asked for bread, crackers or something similar and they stated we could order something off the menu. I have dined at MIchelin star restaurants throughout the world for decades and never ONCE had a restaurant have the audacity to charge for bread or crackers with a cheese plate. One of the senior staff was pretending to care or listen to my friend regarding his suggestions for improvement.
We drove about 50km from Newmarket to have dinner at this outstanding Osteria. Needless to say, the traffic was extremely bad that day and it took us about two hours to get there. We were hungry and thought it was a bad idea to drive that long just to eat but when we had our salumi and gnoccho fritto arrive at the table, we thought it was well worth the drive. There is no other place in Toronto where you can order a thinly-sliced lardo di Colonnata that goes so well with the gnoccho fritto. Couple that with the best-in-town (maybe continent) burrata pizza with an order of lamb's brain wrapped in prosciutto, I was in heaven. That is if you're an adventurous Italian foodie. Definitely worth the drive in traffic!
Great food, and friendly, relaxed friendly service. The chefs in the open kitchen have open and frequent communication with the front of house staff, making for a great dining experience.
Only (slight) negatives : 1. dining chairs are REALLY uncomfortable (chair forces you into a slouch, and the back digs into you unless you sit ramrod straight) - would recommend the banquettes instead of a table; and 2. the lighting level was a bit too low, even for a romantic setting (there were three tables at one point reading the menu with smartphone flashlights).
Other than that, a great experience, and they gave us a lovely little make-your-own pasta kit at the end of the night.
Not up to previous visits. This used to be our go to restaurant for fine food. Restaurant is showing its age. Lacklustre service and food that is good but doesn't say wow. Had ask several times for sparkling water and coffee before delivered. Menu is tired and uninspired. Host was too preoccupied with staff conversation to welcome. Not coming back for a while.
The food is very good, not extraordinary, and dishes are way overpriced. Not worth the fuss in the writing of the menu or the presentation by servers. The lighting of the dining room needs professional attention: very gloomy. My first time at Buca one year ago with a group was exciting, but after this experience, I will not go back or recommend the place. The restaurant now falls in a category of Toronto restaurants I call 'money machines' which put profit and fuss way over the pleasure of eating.
I decided that this would be a great idea to take my wife for our anniversary and it was fabulous. I worked with the staff to help prepare for our arrival and left it to them to help make the meal memorable. The food was innovative yet comforting. There were several dishes that were reminiscent of my childhood vacations back home - everything we tried was as though Nonna was cooking it for us with love. The staff was very attentive yet not overbearing. The dessert, the Torta Di Sanguinaccio, simply AMAZING and brought back memories; my Zia would make this regularly and Buca did it up just right! Upon finishing up, one of the chefs came out to greet us and ask how everything went with our meal. He hmwished us a happy anniversary and handed us over a small care package filled with uncooked fresh pasta and a recipe for cooking it up - we eat out regularly and have on occasion have run into some great food however, never have we been treated to great food, great ambiance, caring staff and the thoughtfulness that went into this care package. We will return, next time with family and friends. Get up, get out and make the trip to this place, you will not be disappointed.
Not a great experience at Buca... Our Server seemed very judgemental and uninterested in serving us, and she didn't give us a last call for the kitchen closing. We were going to order a lot more food, so it was unfortunate that we didn't really have a full dining experience. Even though the food we did order was really good, I don't think it could have made up for the service we received. For a higher end restaurant on King street I was really surprised by this experience. It's unlikely we will be back.
We read a lot of good reviews about Buca, so we decided to reserve for dinner.
Unfortunately, we made a mistake for our reservation time and came 1 hour late.
It was embarrassing, but the staff at Buca were very nice and helpful and found a
space for us, even if the restaurant was crowded. We really appreciated this!
The food was really amazing and atmosphere was also great. We’ll go again and make sure to check our time twice before going.
Amazing food and attentive, helpful staff. You won't be disappointed enjoying a meal here although a bit pricey.
Seeing it was Friday night the rooms were packed and the restaurant was very loud and the dim lighting made the menu challenging to read. Could be my age and eye sight however it was an excellent experience.
Authentic Italian cuisine so you will find creative dishes that incorporate the “whole animal”.
The menu has limited choices so if you are not that adventurous with the sheep brain, horse clod and pork blood there is limited choice. Their salami du buca is made in house and MUST be tried, the pizzas are also great so I am sure everyone can find something that will please them.
Service is top notch! They also send you home with a boxed diy meal to enjoy when it is your birthday. How great is that!
Excellent pizza (the only plus of the evening)
Appetizer didn't arrive prior to pizza (so was cancelled).
Wife's pasta dish was cold and the sauce on it was congealed (had to be sent back resulting in our eating separately)
Champagne never arrived (server realized she had forgotten but not even the meagerest of apology).
3 dishes meant for other tables arrived at our table.
We elected to skip dessert and coffee.
All in all - an excellent way to ruin an anniversary dinner.
Must order fig salad! It was delicious. Full of different flavours!
Fungi pizza was great. Thin crust. Simple and healthy.
Duck pasta was ok. Sauce was yummy. Pasta was undercooked.
Don’t order fried fritta. Did not enjoy this. It was just a big hallow fried dough and had slivers of pork fat. Not at all tasty. It left a greasy slimy feeling in my throat.
Expecting to be impressed, I was ready for an expensive evening but the big bill was the only item that blew me over... I didn't get it. Our appetizers was effectively a charcuterie without bread or crackers (we had to order tiny bread rolls separately), so we had to order the cheeses, breads and meats separately. As an entrée and the Carbonara which I have personally managed to prepare with more flavour (not good). My dinner companions were also not particularly impressed but it was my idea, so I picked up the tab which lessened the blow for them.
Enjoyed the cheese appetizer (tasty but slightly small portions?) , olive oil with bread knots, arrabiata pizza, and scallops, all good for sharing. Also, impressed by one of the higher range Brunellos from extensive list. Service very friendly and capable all around.
