Brussels Bistro Ratings and Reviews
We've dined at Brussels Bistro on numerous occasions. We have never been disappointed. Last night we were there for our Son - Laws birthday. You must start with their Mushroom soup in puffed pastry and then the fun begins. If you like Mussels, this is the place to go. The Beef Bourguinon, fantastic! Their selection of Belgian beer will satisfy any beer lover. There are always nightly specials created by the chef, don't forget to ask! All in all, a wonderful dining experience . Tomorrow morning, we're going for Belgian waffles, yummy!!!
We had a friend recommend Brussels some time back and came for dinner with some friends visiting from overseas. All the reviews that mention this place being a gem are spot on. The food was outstanding, you have to try the mussels and the frites are perfect! Our friends had the pork shank and the tartare and they raved about both. The waitstaff are fantastic, great drinks and beer and we will definitely be back.
Just adore the simplicity and fun of this establishment. It is unlike anything in Southern California. There is a rollicky exuberance of patrons enjoying this treats that are served by a loveable waitstaff. The beers are awesome, the frites (French Fries) divine ... and everything else has fabulous flavor - which comes at the expense of calories and cholesterol - but, if you look ahead, there are certainly tasty options available and often wonderful specials. A true gem.
This was our second visit to the restaurant. It was not as wonderful as the first visit; but still it was good. We arrived early at 4:45 on a Saturday evening and only the front window area was busy. So we got outstanding service further back in the restaurant. We barely ordered anything and it was there. My lemon drop was okay but not good; not very lemony. The appetizer was very good as was the salad and it was large enough to share; lots of field greens. The first time I had mussels Provencal and I regretted not ordering them again. The chicken on a puff pastry was good but not enough to order again. The biscuit the chicken sauce was on was very tough and hard to cut; the puff pastry was about the size of a silver dollar and it was on top of the chicken sauce. My husband like his steak and frites. The fries are always good and crisp and plentiful. We were too full to have dessert so we had a coffee drink and we both liked it. I didn't care for the first glass of wine I ordered and the waiter willingly exchanged it for another, which I liked much better--a French Chardonnay. We would go back; but I would order something else next time.
We've been coming to Brussels Bistro for years and love it every time we go. The smoked salmon pasta is delicious and they serve you enough to have for dinner the next night as well. My husband always orders the pork shank....tender and again, well enough for a second meal. The mustard sauce that accompanies the pork is out of this world! Dip your pommes frites in it!
We sat outside which is a small area several steps below street level. Service was excellent. Bread was crusty outside and soft inside-wonderful. The chicken stew over puffed pastry was excellent. Large portions. The mussels with garlic and white wine lacked flavor. Fries were great.
sitting in the patio area was a quieter, though we missed wishing several birthday wishes to patrons inside. The mussels were great for sharing. A short, well-curated wine by the glass list. Others in our small group enjoyed their dessert. We came a long way and enjoyed our experience.
This was a family lunch pre-theatre for a matinee at the Laguna Playhouse. We all ordered different dishes and everything was excellent, even for the fussy eaters in our group. Mussels are somewhat of a specialty and are offered in half a dozen different ways, they were some of the best my sister in law had ever had. My mother rolled her eyes in delight after her first taste of Cream of Asparagus soup. The bread was warm and crusty, earthy, excellent. Service was attentive and not even a tad pretentious. The restaurant was relaxed, quiet, pretty and all the staff were very polite and accommodating.
Friends introduced us to Brussels Bistro a few weeks ago and we couldn't wait to go back. We used to make a 1/2 day out of going to the San Clemente pier for mussels. No more. The quality of the mussels at Brussels Bistro means we're going to make trips to Laguna Beach instead. 20 minutes from home.
If you're a beer drinker, try the tasting flight.
Service on both visits was perfect: attentive, polite and on top of our needs- bread refills, taking shells away, diet coke refills.
In addition to the mussels, Caesar salad, escargot, boeuf bourguignon, pork shank, apple tart, chocolate mousse...every dish we ordered was well prepared and flavorful.
If you're not familiar with this gem, you'll want to be!
I have been here many times and have never had a bad meal. This is a place that the food is so good that I have went home and tried to recreate it. The waiters are funny, friendly and are there to give you whatever you need. I love to cook so most restaurants dont match up. Not this place. I look forward to coming here and trying new things.
Honestly, this place is such a gem. The service was incredibly warm. The atmosphere and overall feel was fun, very clean, authentic and special. My husband and I can't wait to try all the menu offers in our future visits. This is absolutely my new hot spot. It's not everyday the owners have integrity and put every effort to bring such a unique pleasurable experience from their country to ours. Thank you again
Food is always great. Service is friendly and charming. Beer is terrific. Ambiance is lively, but sound level is moderate - you can have a conversation. Feels very cozy and international in nature. You will hear diners speaking 4 different languages on any given night. Feels like a true European bistro!
First time here, excellent mussel options, I had the curry sauce which was great. My husband had the hanger steak that didn't last very long.they also offer oysters . Great beer selection and happy hour until 6pm, also has full bar. Small quaint place down a small flight of stairs in the heart of Laguna village. Look forward to returning and trying other dishes.
Brussels meatballs for all 4 of us. They are our favorite dish on the menu. We've been coming almost annually during vacation since 2004 when Brussels Bistro opened. The fries are just crunchy enough and flavorful when dipped in the garlic or andulouse sauce.
This was the 2nd time we ate at this restaurant in 8 days. Loved it so much the first time, so decided to return when our daughter was in town last weekend and we were celebrating her birthday. We had requested an outdoor table if available and when we got there we saw several tables (some outdoors) empty. However when we asked for one of these they said they were taken. We told both the host and the waiter of our earlier request and they said the outdoor tables were not available. One of those outdoor tables remained empty the entire time we were there. Once the waiter knew we were dissapointed about our table he was very cold for the remainder of the evening.
The trout entree, which had been delicious the week before was dry and overlooked. My husband got just a few vegetables on his plate unlike what he has been given in the past.
Definitely did not meet our expectations of showing this fabulous new restaurant we had discovered to our daughter. Embarrassing, dissapointing experience.
It was like going back to Brussels. Mussels and twice cooked frites, Belgian draft beer - outstanding. Too bad we were only in town one day - too many other dishes to try. The folks next to use raved about the porkshank and the beef stew with beer (carbonades Flamande) And with good reason - owned by 2 Belgians with a French staff - in SoCal!!
Only issue, it's downstairs, below sidewalk level, with brick walls and noisy!! Or exciting after a couple of beers.
And remember - think of Belgian cooking as French food in German proportions.
This is our go to place when we come to Laguna Beach from San Diego
We love their choices of flavoring for the mussels....what made me a tad disappointed is seeing when we received our bill that curry mussels were $32 and everyday were $28
Missed it on the menu and would not have mattered in ordering however $4.00 for curry seasoning?
Again not their issue due to my choice of enjoying this restaurant on the street however twice while eating the blasting alarms of separate cars went off that startled everyone.. it caught everyone's attention
Nothing one can do about it and it certainly wouldn't stop me from coming back. I guess it's apart of the ambiance!!
The bread they serve along with the food is outstanding!!
This was our third visit, I believe. We have been working our way through the menu. This time we shared some apps. The cheese croquettes were crispy outside and gooey inside. The grilled shrimp in herbed garlic butter was a generous portion with lots of butter for dipping the bread. The bacon-wrapped brie was delightfully rich with a side of watercress (I think). The surprise was the endive salad with ham and gouda. Not a trace of bitterness that you may find, if the endive is 't cut properly. There's a large assortment of Belgian beers on tap and an extensive wine list. Save room for dessert - anything with Belgian chocolate, the finest in the world IMHO.
