It was a weekday dinner with a good friend. This place was just perfect. Their service was very attentive and all staff were very friendly and kind to walk us through the menu options. The food was very tasty and presented elegantly. I as a chef can see that they use very high quality of fish, meat and vegetables, and flavor was really there. The egg flan with truffle was very silky and the sauce has great texture. Fish on Sashimi course was excellent. Chef did his work on each kind of fish.
It’s totally worth for the quality of food and time. It has become our favorite- good for daily dinner and special occasions. Highly recommend.
We went on friday for my friends birthday. Spent over $1000 and in this price range you would assume that everything is close to perfect or at least the attempt is there.
1. it took extremely long to get our first drink order in
2. the overall dinner took from 8.00pm to 11.30pm which is way too long and by 10.30 everyone on the table was already exhausted and the additional food that was served coudnt be consumed with excitement. Bottom line is the timing of serving all the different courses is totally off, it takes way too long and is not in flow with the overall experience.
3. the waiter mixed up the plates with special request
4. one course was missing "the top of a sandwich" so you couldn't eat it and we had to wait for it to be served
5. no one asked if we would like to order a second drink, our glasses weren't refilled for a while and we had to actively ask a waiter.
6. coat check is not heated, even mid class restaurants like Soccarath are able to heat the coats for guest and a meal there is only 70$ per person.
Bottom line is the poor service, overpriced experience and no attention to detail makes this experience not recommended . We have choosen the most expensive menu available in the restaurant but it does not held up with the overall experience. Very disappointing for spending so much money.
The food and presentation was impeccable, the service was among the best I've ever received, and the environment was a perfectly quiet, private dining experience.
We were also given a wonderful complimentary dessert for my Birthday. What a lovely surprise.
I cannot imagine how any aspect of my dinner could have been better and I definitely plan on returning.

got the kaiseki tasting menu, food did not taste great, the oyster appetizer was especially funky, and their obsession with holding the food together with a hard shell biscuit like material confuses me. not an authentic japanese dining experience, perhaps will suit the taste of american diners more.

We enjoyed another wonderful dinner here. The food is flavorful and pure, with high quality ingredients and little to distract. For what you get, the tasting menu prices are extremely reasonable and hopefully remain as they are for a good long time.

You can have much much better meal than brushstroke for lower price. Ramen was below average.
The food was too sweet, one couldn't taste the oysters because of the sweet condiments they came in. I was hoping for a more traditional Japanese menu. This is a fusion restaurant which try to cater to this country sugar addiction. Quite a disappointment.

We arranged to come here for my birthday for the Kaiseki because we enjoyed it so much in the past. I received several calls confirming our reservation on Thursday and Friday of that week. The night we arrived, after being seated, we were told there was no kaiseki. I was really upset by that. Then my cocktail took over 15 minutes to be delivered to our table. The waiter who brought out our orders was very hard to understand so I did not get the full info on the dishes we had. The food was great as usual but it seemed like the death knell was near for the nearly empty restaurant. The TOTO Japanese toilet wasn't even working properly, none of the buttons did what they were supposed to, except the one that closes the toilet cover. Sad, as we really loved it two years ago when we went for our anniversary.

Had a memorable evening at the counter, watching the Chefs preparing the food very precisely w/o any hectic. Food was very good. Still very much recognizable as authentic Japanese, but with a twist.
Brushstroke never fails to surprise us with new dishes and winning flavor combinations. Service is impeccable: attentive, yet without being intrusive. We always keep Brushstroke at the top of our list especially for our out of town guests, but it’s great for date nights too.
Brushstroke is the best restaurant I've ever been to -- and I've been to a lot of the "top" ones. It's #1.
We chose to eat at Brushstroke on our final night in NYC - worth the wait. The service was outstanding - knowledgeable and very friendly (notably the sommelier who is a star). The food was outstanding - even a full vegetarian menu. We will definitely visit again next time we are in the city
New ramen was delicious, especially the sweet corn!
First off, yes it was expensive. Was it worth it, yes. Although not every bite was something I would try again, I absolutely would try the tasting menu again. The staff was impeccable, both the front and back of the house. The food was fresh and expertly prepared, delivered, and explained. It is an experience and as long as you appreciate it for what it is, you will not be disappointed.
My husband and I had dinner at brushstroke on Christmas eve. we had the 9 course, and the 5 course omakase. The 9 courses had a few very tasty dishes. I especially loved the "seasonal kobachi from sea", everything from oysters, sweet shrimp and shrimp liver were amazing. I can still remember the sweet after taste. The "toro uni ikura sushi in masu box" was also excellent. I find the wagyu too fatty, not my favorite. The 5 courses' food were just average, the only memorable dish was the soba, the soup was rich in taste and comforting.
The omakases are quite big in portion, we could barely finish everything. Overall, I would go back and order a la carte.
The waiters there are so nice. the food is just in the medium level.
Our meal at Bruststroke was exceptional. We had the delicious Kaiseiki Lunch 5 course menu. They also have a Vegetarian Kaiseiki menu. Definitely a must go restaurant.
We celebrated our 8th years wedding anniversary here. We had 5 courses meal. Everything is perfect.
brushstroke is our go-to restaurant for a special evening out, and it never disappoints in any way. Every dish in the 9-course kaiseki menu s a delightful surprise, especially the seasonal “kobachi” of seafood, so good we didn't want to give up our plates. Wine and sake pairings were spot on for every course, service was polite and efficient. We're already looking forward to our next visit.
We were big fans of Brushstroke and haven’t been in a few years - and were keen to try again. A big disappointment. We immeadiately noticed that the service had slipped after being seated - then the food presentation, which was fantastic, is just okay. And finally, the food is nowhere near the quality as it used to be. Needless to say we won’t be returing.
A beautiful and thoughtfully laid out space where every detail is presented beautifully. The service was spot-on as you would expect at a restaurant of this caliber. That said, the real star of the evening was the food. Not unfamiliar with Japanese cuisine, I have been to many equally as fussy establishments to find some serious Japanese faux pas. A beautiful balance of tradition and creativity. The only negative was the very noisy group sitting near us but I would not blame the restaurant for this. I look forward to going back soon. A very memorable experience!
I've been to every good restaurant in NYC more than once (having lived here for decades) however wanted to try a place that was "new" for me. It's a short list so I thought I would try Brushstroke. Let me back up. Annually, I try a new sushi restaurant in NYC around my birthday. Someplace I wouldn't necessarily go monthly. This meal was not for my birthday however a friend's birthday and I was treating. I've been to all the greats: Nobu (on a regular basis), Nakazawa, O'ya, Akashi, you name it. Based on the reviews, I had somewhat of a high expectation. Unfortunately, I was extremely disappointed. We chose the tasting menu and 2 out of the 8 dishes, we had to pay an up charge. Really? Additionally, we had a waiter who did not speak English well and also had a cold. We ordered a bottle of sake and was not steered in the right direction. But above all, I ended up getting some sort of a food allergy reaction (even though I have no known allergies to food). Now, I understand, for a regular Monday evening meal that doesn't cost hundreds of dollars, you don't expect the meal and the experience to be perfect. However, for a special evening, with the meal costing more than what I had spent at Nakazawa, I would never recommend this place. It's a complete waste of money and experience. Even if the food was sub-par (which is not okay at this price point), if the experience and decor were notable, that would have in some small measure made up for the lack there of. However, that was not the case and I was reminded of why I had never wanted to try this place in the first place.

The food was ok.. The bento box was awful.!!! It felt as if the fish had gone bad - it was just a bad dish.
Overall the menu was a little boring.. Nothing really interesting.
Food was fair. A few dishes I liked but nothing memorable. On a few the flavors were off, such as sable floating in tuna water/ blech. Nothing I would go back for. Froofy. Very pricey. Service was good. The space is pretty but no big deal. Small with a few very nice tables and several all jammed together in one spot. It's ok to try once but I won't go back.
Presentation is a key point of Kaiseki. Pictures on website is great. But didn't see any of that during our meal.
Also food wasn't anything special either. Instead of trying to refine traditional items it looks like they attempted fusion style. It really didn't work.
Servers didn't really know what they were serving and it was difficult to understand what they were explaining as they were serving the food.
I definitely would tell my friends to avoid this place!
Date night special!
Wonderful food and service with close attention to our eating and questions. We had the tasting menu. It was fabulous. There was a delay between the 5th and 6th courses so we had an extra course of wagu beef (better than what we had in japan) and two extra desserts complements of the chef!
It’s not dinner, it’s an experience.
