Contemporary American

Browntrout is a comfortable, casual fine-dining experience. We celebrate the bounty of local farms with classic American dishes as well as nods to foreign fare. Located in the North Center neighborhood, we offer outdoor patio seating in the summer as well as a large communal table that accommodates parties up to 18. We have a full bar stocked with local spirits and beer, seating there is first come, first served. Choose from a worldly selection of wines as well as craft cocktails and local beers. We serve the same organic hand-made food for the children, who eat free from 5-7pm. Our rooftop garden hosts an array of herbs and vegetables and sustainably farmed products are sourced whenever possible. Seafood and meats are all free range and sustainable. We dined at Browntrout on its last night in business—August 30, 2015. As always, the food was excellent, and the service friendly. We've consistently visited three or four times a year for the past six years, and are sorry to see Browntrout go. Incidentally, I can't seem to select any of the "what would you recommend this restaurant for" checkboxes except the one marked "neighborhood gem." Browntrout was that, but it was also "fit for foodies," and, on Sundays, when there was live music, had a "vibrant bar scene."

This was our first time at Browntrout. We ordered the fried chicken, which is a Sunday specialty, and it was quite good -- tender and juicy. I think this restaurant would have more business if the Number 11 bus was still running. Too bad it's going to be closing at the end of this month.

Browntrout is a quiet little place with a very nice ambiance (good indie music in the background), tasty beverages, and outright amazing food. Some of the portion sizes are small (such as that of the fish I had my first time there), so if you're hungry you might ask your server for appropriate suggestions; the very helpful staff we've interacted with have known details down to where and how everything was sourced. The food, though -- the food! Their 25%-mushroom burger is one of the best I've ever had (to cook it beyond medium-rare would be a crime). The garnishes and sides with that fish were likewise outstanding. There's much on their menu I haven't yet tried, and for that reason we'll be back.

The highlight of the experience was the hostess. Kind and genuine from the start to finish. The mussels and lake trout spread were lackluster. Needed more seasoning as they were very bland. Such a shame too, the mussels were the largest I've ever had. The server delivered our food and forgot to even come back and take an entree order so we decided to go get BBQ down the street. Half price wine bottles was nice for a Sunday night! Really wanted a good neighborhood restaurant but the service and food fell way short.

I picked this place to take my two boys who live in the area. The food was unique and tasty and a good, upscale place to visit. It was a change from their usual pizza/burger place for sure! Our waiter was attentive without being invasive which we really appreciated. He was also very knowledgeable about the food.

We were seated right on time and received prompt but not rushed service. The menu is somewhat limited, which I imagine follows a philosophy of let's do a fewer number of dishes very well, than a larger number not so terrific. But I would recommend checking the menu in advance to ensure that you'll find what you want. While we enjoyed the meal, we all thought it was somewhat pricey for the level provided. And while the rolls were great, paying $6 or so for them was not something that I am used to. For us to return, it would take another special occasion.

We were disappointed that the menu was different than what was posted on-line as that was what drew us to this restaurant. The web page should be changed if the menu changes. The food was good, not particularly creative and not great, and we felt it was overpriced for the quality and presentation.

We had a fantastic mushroom, egg, and grit appetizer. There were several appetizers and salads to choose from -- all good choices. However, there were only 4 main courses to choose from -- hangar steak, walleye, salmon, and the special fish and chips -- and I would have liked more choices. We both had the special and it was really good -- delicious and filling. Dessert (butterscotch) was so-so. No chocolate desserts to choose from, which to me is a big mistake!

Its a bit expensive for the portions you get, but all of the food I had tasted great. I love that its locally sourced, but unfortunately that means they run out of things. I went at 7 on a Sunday evening, and they were already out of 2 of their entrees. When the menu isn't that big, that can be a problem

We enjoyed dinner here before an ATC play (The Projects - which we recommend). Our waiter recommended the mushrooms - they were yummy. The softshell crab was very good as well. We also split the fish and chips - tasty and moist with a very ample portion of fish so we were glad we split. The albarino Lago de Condesa was a tasty compliment to the food. We finished with rhubarb strawberry sorbet and pistachio chocolate chip gelato - both bowls were quickly emptied. Our waiter noted our time constraint throughout our meal with good service and brought our check so that we could easily stroll down to our show.

My brother is on a health kick and is all about local foods and all that jazz. I took him here for his birthday and he really liked it. The mushroom starter, trout and baked cheese were amazing. The hazelnut beer was very smooth and I definitely expect to visit again. The birthday dinner was a complete success.

Food was good albeit very slow coming out of the kitchen. House made ricotta appetizer was unusual & delish. Risotto OK & meatball grinder was abundant & probably better if it was hot. Crazy $2 charge per drink if you want it on the rocks?! (Like scotch or whiskey) One server was obnoxiously loud.

Our party of four greatly enjoyed our dinner on Saturday night. The weather was balmy so it was a bonus to have the large front window open to the air. Though I have eaten at Brown Trout a couple of times before, this was my most outstanding meal. The Walleye was fantastic and the others at my table enjoyed the trout. We took advantage of the free corkage for vintages over 10 years old with a 2004 bottle from Walla Walla. That policy helped bring me in the door Saturday though I understand they offer free corkage on Thursdays for any vintage.

Great food from sustainable resources, the best of seasonal choices "a la minute", and knowledgeable, very friendly service make me wish to return again and again. Great variety in the menu, many fun specials ( oysters are $1.50 per before 7p) and even nights of BYOB without corkage charge despite a very well rounded wine list make it so that everyone should try it out. You won't be disappointed if you're looking for a very nice food experience in a convivial surround.

We've been wanting to try Browntrout since we saw the restaurant's review on Check, Please. Was happy to find out they were open for Easter Brunch. The Eggs Benedict and French Slow Cooked Mushroom Omelette were outstanding. I found the Bloody Mary a tad too sweet. I left my glasses at the restaurant and they were kind enough to track me down through my Open Table reservation. Thank you!

We have been to the Browntrout quite a few times and always enjoyed it. We especially liked the fact that it was in the neighborhood. However this last visit was less than enjoyable. The service was very slow, the server was frazzled with us sitting there waiting for our cocktails for half an hour. The appetizers came before the drinks. When I complained the server got defensive. The rest of the dinner was also sub par. We have decided not to go back. There are too many good restaurants out there.

Does farm to table mean they wait until you order, then find the farm, get the ingredients and then prepare the food. Our food was exceptional but the food preparation time on my visit was poor to abysmal. Our waiter apologized several times during our wait for food. Fortunately my dinner companions helped to pass the time or we may have left before the food was ready. The food including kale salad, Bolognese and appetizer were all high quality, tasty, and plated well. Enough that we will try again and determine if the slow kitchen was an exception

My family and i dropped in on a Wednesday night and they had noticibly stepped their game up from an already impressive one. I am always impressed. They are with notably a Gem and a considerable entity in the Chicago restaurant industry. I am happy I live in the neighborhood but i would totally travel from the Suburbs as my friends do. I always bring out of town guests here it is the best for that because it is consistently impressive.

Browntrout Restaurant has a limited menu. But, the choices are intersting and the menu was perfectly explained by our knowledgable server. The drink selection is good as is the beer and wine list. Almost all items are locally produced. The oyster (which aren't from the area) were fresh as well. It is a small place but is quiet and comfortable. It is really worth your time to visit this gem.
