Brown's Beach House - The Fairmont Orchid - Kohala Coast
First time there for dinner. Everything was wonderful, Food was delicious and served at appropriate intervals. Server Christian fantastic
Perfect oceanfront location. Extremely attentive service. And the food was excellent. Great for a very special occasion.
One of our favorite places to dine. The setting is beautiful and they are ver accommodating to vegetarians.
An absolutely first rate experience in all aspects. My wife and I both had the crab encrusted kampachi which was delicious. Our table was almost in the water and the sunset was spectacular!
Mi wife and I had two seafood dishes - both were excellent. The Kampachi dish was one of the best preparations of this delicious fish that I have ever had.
Brown’s has always been expensive but we planned a special anniversary dinner there because we got married at the Orchid and it’s a super special place for us. The scenery is amazing and it’s always a lovely experience to eat there and watch the sunset, but the food is incredibly overpriced yet average. The staff is super friendly but we still left feeling ripped off. Sadly, I don’t think we’ll be back.
Wonderful atmosphere, food and service. The crab encrusted kampachi was one of the best dishes I have ever had.
Good service and food delicious
Wonderful Kampachi topped with crab and purple potato puree. Perfectly balanced cocktails. It's pricey, sure, but nothing shocking given its a resort and in Hawaii.
We had a waterfront table that was located apart from the other tables and it was perfect for a romantic sunset dinner with quiet live music. The food was prepared beautifully and tasted amazing! We loved everything that we ordered. Recommended for a special date or celebration.
Delicious, fresh and local food. Service was friendly, knowledgeable and timely.
The view was amazing with the sunsetting on the water. Service was excellent. We had a terrific server, Christian. Food was executed very nicely. Good wine selection.
Wonderful !! We will definitely be back again!
Everything was fantastic. Dinner on the beach watching the sunset can’t be beat! Do not skip the mauna lani mule! Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the evening.
I am never disappointed with Browns. You can’t beat the location and the food and service is always top notch. Not cheap but well worth it. Will be back
We were celebrating an anniversary and were given a table right by the beach. Lovely setting with live music but not too loud. Loved the ahi Caesar salad. Excellent service.
So disappointed. We went to Browns for a special birthday dinner with a reservation two weeks in advance. OUR FORMER VISITS WERE FINE. We had to wait for a table following 3 groups w/NO reservations who were seated before us... Non- plussed bored hostess. no magic or special welcome. We felt invisible. (Do they realize what we were to pay to eat there?) We were seated in the back & on the outskirts way away on th4e edge of the table set up and far from the front tables nearer the water. WE NOTICED a table in the middle that we could havae been seated at but it was never filled..we should have asked to be moved to that table as that area had an experienced server. We had an inexperienced & poor server who was NOT prompt in greeting us. Bus boy had body oder & in was in a hurry to clear plates. He spilled my glass of expensive red wine, he really didn't look too sorry and laid two napkins over the spill. The wine barely missed my sons slacks. Ithe wine was replaced but our server never followed up with an "I'm sorry." Food was not great. The beef filet had some chewy sections. The Kampachi dish sounded good- but it was awful. Poke was okay. Beet salad okay. Appetizer -kona prawns were okay. It was hard to see my food. The best part was the mud pie. We will not be going back next year. Very expensive for a disappointing meal and dining experience. We had such high hopes for a special evening.
Anniversary- interesting that the Japanese couple adjacent to us received a complimentary desert with “Happy Anniversary” and we received nothing despite being Mauna Lani homeowners and Mauna Lani Advantage card members!!
Dinner was exceptional - very fresh fish and creative presentation. The beautiful sunset setting was enhanced by the wonderful guitar player and his music. It's a special place to have a great meal and create memories.
Great restaurant with a breathtaking sunset view.
A little pricey! Could have used a chicken entree option also.
Absolutely wonderful! Great Service and outstanding food and wine. The setting and live music made it a memorable occasion. Highly recommend.
Our waitress Michelle was very attentive and Dylan was always there to pick up our plates and add water to our glasses. Both had funny and lively personalities.
The food was delicious and the atmosphere was impossible to beat. The tikki torches and the local artist blowing the conch shell made this dinner experience a 5 star plus.
The restaurant is oceanfront in a beautiful resort. We started with a delicious beet salad, followed by light airy bread and super thin flat bread, probably the thinnest and the best well seasoned i’ve ever head, salted butter and macadamia hummus was impressive. I ordered the filet mignon and my husband the surf n turf. His meat was overcooked for medium rare so they may have swapped our steaks. Some pieces had a little fat on it as well. Good seasoning, the vegetables on the filet mignon were very salty. The creme brûlée was very different, had a foamy texture and not what i was expecting. They are creative and have a nice presentation. Our server Alice was extremely polite and pleasant.
We made our reservation for 6 pm to catch the 7pm sunset. (Bring a sweater as the trades make for a breezy night.) The appetizers are a must. We chose several to share and were delighted with them. Entrees were excellent, too. We were celebrating two graduations and Brown's decorated two desserts accordingly, much to our surprise! The view is wonderful, and we got to see a sea turtle that crawled up on shore. Live music was very nice. It made for a memorable evening.
Wonderful service, food was outstanding, sunset was beautiful. Live music couldn’t have been any better. Loved every moment, would recommend this place for sure!
Incredible gourmet food! Beautiful ambiance. 100% would recommend
Beautiful beach location, but otherwise underwhelmed by dinner. Server was very slow getting our drink order (15 to 20 min), then failed to tell us any of the specials or daily catch prior to asking for our food order. Finally got that done and ordered a bottle of wine for dinner. Wine did not appear until after our salads/appetizers were done. Server poured a glass as our entrees arrived then disappeared with our bottle of wine for 20 minutes. Upon returning, they asked us if we wanted another bottle of wine, and we had to remind them they took well over half of our bottle away somewhere. 10 to 15 minutes later they reappeared with the remainder of our bottle of wine, well after our entrees were done.
With respect to food, both of us were disappointed in our meals. The Big Eye tuna was okay but not nearly as good as most ahi dishes we had elsewhere during our stay in Hawaii, and the vegetables that accompanied it were barely cooked and extremely bland. My wife's dish (the daily catch) was sub par, and in her case, the veggies that accompanied the meal were overcooked and unrecognizable.
All around, on off night for the restaurant. If you want a similar, but better, beach side dining experience, try Napua's about a mile and a half away. Our experience was far better.
nice location and great service and food was great
An amazing night!! We made our reservation for before sunset so we could enjoy the beautiful view. The food was wonderful and the staff was attentive. Highly recommend
My girlfriend and I just got married and we were celebrating our honeymoon. We were staying in Hapuna Beach and decided to try Brown's in the Fairmont. When we called the Fairmont, the individual we spoke with was a jerk. Told us not to come early because we were not allowed to walk on their beach, sit near their pool even though we were going for dinner and using the spa. Of course when we got there Aloha spirit was everywhere so none of it was an issue, but perhaps management can give talking points to its staff.
Food at Brown's was excellent. We had the Mushroom Mac and Cheese, Grilled Octopus, Island Vegetables, Fish of the Day and Salads. Our waitress was attentive probably too much so, but hey better that than being ignored. The challenge was is that the online menu had virtually no resemblance to the actual menu. This was very noticeable to my wife who is gluten free and suggested we go the the restaurant for the gluten free options highlighted online but non existent on the actual menu. The problem was our dessert. We had ordered the creme brulee and it was more like liquid pineapple mush with bits of candied fruit. No texture, no taste. We brought it to our server's attention and she kindly suggested we just eat the coconut sorbet as it was better anyway. When she served the dessert she brought it to us on a beautiful plate that Happy Honeymoon written on it in chocolate. Very cool and appreciated.
The location on the water is great but close enough to their beach so you can hear frolicking and partying which was a bit of a mood killer in the beginning. With the vog we caught an amazing sunset and felt unrushed to enjoy the location.
All in all would recommend but cannot give it the fifth star for food because of the unimaginative pedestrian creme brulee.
This is on the short list of our favorite restaurants on earth. The outside sitting area, next to the beautiful small swimming bay with the rest of the ocean right in front of you, with nothing blocking the view other than a couple of palm trees, is magical. The only other high-end restaurant view that rivals this in all of the Hawaiian islands is Merriman's in Kapalua on Maui. The food is equally incredible. The Kampachi fish encrusted with crab is amazingly good; better than the Kampachi we had anywhere else in recent years (if ever). And the service was great; attentive without being overbearing.
Beautiful setting! The food was delicious: had the grilled octopus starter, venison (from Maui) entree and the Ono (fish) stew. A wonderful and varied wine list. Our server, Ann, was wonderful: helping to guide us through the menu and pairing wines with our food. It was our last night in Hawaii and Browns made it very special!
Service was great. Having gluten-free options for my wife’s allergy is always a great thing. Especially, having gluten-free bread with a hint of hawaiian salt & honey. The great service was a definate plus. The duck was amazing and the mushroom mac n’ cheese with truffle oil was too. Main meal was also delicious for the both of us. The Hawaiian sea bass was good; a bit too ginger tasting for me; but my wife really liked it. And her Opa was more to my liking with an amazing sauce. But hands down the BEST poke we have had leaving in hawaii (17 years here for my wife and 9 years here for me). It is the MUST have starter to any meal.
Browns was exceptional in every way: Cuisine (Filet, Fish), service (Christian) and ambiance. Exceptionally-romantic.
Celebrated my husbands big 50. Atmosphere and view are stunning. Michelle gave us the best service and felt like a friend. Food was wow! Great mellow live music. Fabulous experience!
We spent a lovely evening at Brown's Beach House; it's one of our favorite places on the Big Island. The atmosphere was wonderful: balmy weather (though it was cloudy and no sunset), and great live music by a singer who sang all of our favorite songs. My only other comment is that most, if not all, of the entrees on the menu appeared to be (delightfully) rich. I'd like to see some simpler items on the menu.
A restaurant is first and foremost about the food. Sadly, Brown's leaves much to be desired. My wife and I shared dinner here and agreed that the beat salad was good and it all went downhill from there. My swordfish was served in a broth that was uneven with grossly overcooked abalone and shrimp. Her mahi mahi special had an "aioli" on it and was served over Angel Hair pasta with cherry tomatoes. The Aioli was too close to mayonnaise and when it mixed with the pasta the dish became strangely flavored.
This is a special location, truly one of the most beautiful settings in the world. It is unfortunate that management has chosen to neglect the most important element of the dining experience.
The server was great. Cocktails were basic but well prepared. The setting is unmatched. The food was just.. well... bad.
My husband and I enjoyed our dinner here very much! We live on the island, in Hilo, and had come across the island to celebrate our anniversary- we picked Brown's for its location and menu, and we were not disappointed! Lovely and comfortable outdoor seating, great view, and we were blessed with one of the most colorful sunsets we have ever seen! Soft live music and torches added to the ambience. Excellent service, appealing and creative menu, delicious food and drinks, dietary need easily accommodated. All around wonderful experience, would definitely recommend to friends and will consider coming back :)
Ambiance as always was simply spectacular. Strongly recommend requesting a table outside with a reservation ~45 min prior to sunset. No better setting for a romantic dinner. My only complaint (and this was disappointing, to be honest) is that the Filet Mignon I ordered medium rare was prepared medium well (kind of broke my heart a little, but didn't want say anything at the time and risk disrupting what was an otherwise incredible and romantic evening). Overall though, this is still one of my favorite fine dining experiences on the Big Island
We had a beautiful ocean-front dinner. The setting was romantic. The live guitar player/singer was tremendous. Food was excellent. We shared an ahi Caesar salad to start, then had steak & lobster, with a side of pasta, and a dessert. Both of us thought, for the price, we should have had more lobster. Service was friendly and efficient without being disruptive. All in all, it was a lovely setting and delicious meal. We were glad we went!
