Brown's Beach House - The Fairmont Orchid - Kohala Coast Ratings and Reviews
A perfect beachfront location and views of the surf, sand, cove and ocean as far as you can see. The tables are well spaced so no issues of noise esp if you sit outside. The service was fast and very friendly. The menu is extensive with surf or land dishes and a broad wine by the glass or bottle. We could not have had a greater dinner and evening experience for a hotel- based location.
Browns is at the Fairmont Orchid where we are staying.....it is located right on the lawn, beachfront. Perfect setting.
The food was excellent.... as was the wait staff. Varied menu offerings between meat and fish....plenty to choose from....
We would definitely eat here again...
Came here twice about a year ago and the experience was great. Tonight was pretty bad. Horrible seat, fish tasted like it was three days old, lobster was cold, creme brûlée had good flavor but not prepared well. Wine was different vintage than on the menu, hostess and waitress were both rude and inconvenienced by us.
Lovely hotel - best part of evening was cocktails overlooking ocean with guitar serenade in background. Restaurant is located next to beach with requisite ocean ambiance. Dinners were good, but nothing noteworthy. Service attentive. Price reflects hotel and location i. e. high.
Our second time back after 4 years....still EXCELLENT. Dining on the beach with Hawaiian music at sunset...what more do you need? All dishes and service were excellent. Our bus boy was the same gentleman we had 4 years ago...been there 18 years. Long term staff usually attests to quality at a restaurant.
We were hesitant based on the hit or miss nature of many of the reviews but everything about our experience was first rate. Food was excellent and the service matched-- the pace was sympathetic to our wanting to linger and the dessert touch that acknowledged our anniversary was really nice. Our endorsement is unqualified.
Great food and great service. One thing that was disturbing was watching one of the workers drag a large bag of trash through the dining room while people were eating! Need to find another way to do that or just wait until the restaurant is closed. Not very appetizing!
This felt like hotel dining and we liked Merriman's much better.
The setting outside with ocean views was great. The service was also very good.
The food is where it fell short, it looked the part in presentation like so many hotel restaurants do but did not deliver in flavor profile or execution. The seared ono appetizer was was great quality fish but it was under seasoned and did not have much flavor B. The poke appetizer had a beautiful presentation with three accoutrements to add but they were just for show and did not make sense, who needs to add pink salt to an already salty dish? The poke itself was not exciting and could not be helped by what they offered to add B. The Mac and cheese was over cooked making the dish mushy and the cheese sauce lacked flavor D. The crab crusted Kampachi had good quality well prepared fish but the crab had no flavor and the mushrooms and asparagus were over powered with some sort of grey mush that tasted like pureed black beans(I tried to go back and see what it actually was but their menu online is not current)
The chef needs to go beyond coming up with dishes that look and sound good and actually taste them and tweak them until they are perfected.
Although the food was good the conflicting music with Logan playing and loud disco music from the near by wedding ruined the evening. Would not recommend as very high price to not be able to relax and enjoy dinner. The restaurant/ Hotel needs to eliminate competing wedding music. In a effort to make more money, the hotel really runs a wonderful atmosphere of a high end restaurant!
The night we ate there was very windy; little or no protection. Ruined any ambiance. Opa special was very good. Server was very good as well. Featured wine was not available. Very pricey but so is everything at the Fairmont. OK but better value and food is available at other nearby restaurants in my opinion.
I have dine here for 15 years straight and love everything about it. On this particular night, something was amiss. There were high winds and the waiters were moving tables back under cover. We ordered and our appetizers took a bit longer than expected. Then, 90 minutes later our dinner arrived. We saw our waiter (very tall) once over this period of time, with no explanation. When our dinner finally arrived, I asked the waiter if we should order dessert now. Still no apology or explanation. The waiter sent the matre’ d over who told us that they were down from 8 people in the kitchen to 3. My daughter’s fish was very overdone and potatoes OVER peppered. We mentioned it to the waiter, who ignored this. I don’t think I will go back!
When in Kohala we always go to Brown's. The setting is magnificent on the beach. Service is always top notch. I am old school Hawaii having traveled there a lot when Pacific Rim and the Great Chefs of Hawaii were getting started. The flavors were always startling and fabulous. I find that Kohala has gotten staid in their ways--catering to no gluten, no carbs, veggies have gotten too expensive, flavor of choice is wasabi and in ten days I was never offered a dish with mango, pineapple or papaya. That being said, food was okay and we went twice because we love the ambiance.
Went for my birthday with my family. We arrived early to have a cocktail at the bar before our reservation and told the hostess so she was aware and left her totally flustered. Our server was very mediocre, we poured most of our wine ourselves and she rarely checked in on us. And the restaurant is next to their casual bar which was playing a football game. So with every touchdown or interception we could hear the bar crowd shouting. Food was solid but not spectacular. The live music and view were helpful though.
We came to Browns for my husbands 53rd birthday, while we were on family vacation with our adult children. To quote our son, “EVERY molecule of every bite was AMAZING”. Our standard has just been raised...every great meal will now be compared to this experience. Thank you to Chef and to Alice for this fabulous memory. Oh. And the view isn’t bad either.
