Brown's Beach House - The Fairmont Orchid - Kohala Coast Ratings and Reviews
Went for my birthday with my family. We arrived early to have a cocktail at the bar before our reservation and told the hostess so she was aware and left her totally flustered. Our server was very mediocre, we poured most of our wine ourselves and she rarely checked in on us. And the restaurant is next to their casual bar which was playing a football game. So with every touchdown or interception we could hear the bar crowd shouting. Food was solid but not spectacular. The live music and view were helpful though.
We came to Browns for my husbands 53rd birthday, while we were on family vacation with our adult children. To quote our son, “EVERY molecule of every bite was AMAZING”. Our standard has just been raised...every great meal will now be compared to this experience. Thank you to Chef and to Alice for this fabulous memory. Oh. And the view isn’t bad either.
I've been wanting to try this place since my foodie friend reviewed it. I made reservations for 5:30 to enjoy the sun set. It's a beautiful location on a bay. The setting alone would bring me back but the food is amazing too. The drinks were fantastic. Dessert was good but compared to the rest of the meal left me underwhelmed. Service was fantastic. I'd highly recommend this for a special occasion for locals or visitors.
Appetizers and dessert (beet salad and milk chocolate crunch) were excellent but the entrees (kampachi and lobster/dungeness crab) were just ok...not my preferred style of food so it won’t bring me back. Just too much going on with the sauces and cream corn and mushrooms you couldn’t even taste the fish/lobster/crab underneath.
Although the location was lovely and the service was great, both my husband and I were terribly disappointed by the food. Neither of us enjoyed our entrees, and my husband later felt somewhat ill. He had the tuna, which has been favorably reviewed by other users. I had the kampechi, but I found the dish to be too sweet. Overall, we would neither recommend nor return to Brown's.
There’s nothing I can say about Brown’s Beach House that will convey how great it is. Make sure you get a reservation prior to sunset so you can watch the show. Spectacular views!! The food is amazing also. The beet salad was so fresh and the appetizer prawns were to die for! If you are on the Big Island, go to Brown’s!!
The food deceived us.
Not a 4 diamond gastronomical restaurant
Lack of caracter, usual internationnal food.
We had ahi poke ( usual) and shrimps for staters (too much garlic).
Crab and lobster was very good.
Our dessert, chocolat with grilled pineapple tasted too much truffles: weird tadte for a dessert.
We have dined here several times over the years. This last time was a bit disappointing in the quality of the food. Cocktails good, wine list extensive and service great. Apps and entrees were just ok. Hopefully they will get back to the higher quality we used to enjoy on food.
The restaurant had a beautiful setting right in front of the ocean with a great view of the sunset. The food was really good especially the filet mignon which was tender and moist. Our server was great and offered to take pictures for us in the sunset.
Generally very good and what you would expect from a restaurant of this caliber and price. However, their "award winning" signature desert of chocolate and foie gras was awful and disgusting. It should be removed from the menu. Although it sparked our interest and the waiter represented it properly, the flavors were off putting. Two of the people with us are professional chefs and appreciated the offering. But it was a failure.
We were on vacation and read great reviews. I wish I remembered the name of the hostess. She was so nice. Radim was awesome. And the view is spectacular. The food was so yummy. Please move closer to my home in LA so I can visit more often
This is the best restaurant on the island, not only in our opinion, but it was voted most romantic setting (Oceanside). The food and beverage specials are spectacular. I don't mind paying more for really good food. If you want a wonderful dining experience (complete with nightly entertainment), go to Brown's. We did-twice in 6 days!
Dined here for wife's 40th. It was a good time. Maybe I am too critical, but for the price, the experience could have been much more. The wine list is sparse and not thoroughly thought out. Salads were served with spoiled ingredients and pieces remained that should have been discarded during preparation. The fish and steak were presented well but both were slightly overcooked and lukewarm. We had ordered a special dessert that had trick candles that my wife could not blow out. Then the cake was quickly removed and we saw no one for a good long time. When a sliced cake arrived, the slices were super small....alright, I guess, just not how I would have done it. The service was not consistent either. We rarely saw our assigned person and had to ask the bussers a number of times to do things for us including going to fetch the waiter. For this experience, we spent almost $500. The wine was $165 as there were no good cheaper options. The cake was $45 dollars. It was a lilikoi/raspberry glutan free cake and was delicious. The view is excellent.
Recent vacation stay on the Big Island lead to dinner at Brown’s Beach House.Great view with lovely sunset, sparkling wine the the best opah! My husband loved his ahi as well but agreed I chose the best dish. Appetizer ahi and avocado poke also delicious. Our waiter was helpful, knew menu well and provided great service. Would return weekly if lived close by, but will return next trip
