Brown Dog Cafe Ratings and Reviews
Outstanding! Complementary chowder shots from the kitchen started the evening off with a taste bud party. My wife and I had the wild boar and pork chop. Both were excellent - exploding with flavor. The boar is best cooked to medium rare temperature. Bread pudding dessert is a must.
We typically have a good meal at Brown Dog and on our visit had some good items--except for the Wild Board I ordered. I was able to eat some of it, then had it removed from the table. Service staff was on the issue, and they removed the item from our bill. The rest of our experience was good.
We will return.
Service was really not great this time
No vine counseling
Errors in the menu brocolini were replaced by non cooked brocoli
And green beans ended up being chard
Without being told before
One would expect to be informed properly on what you get on your entree if the latter is going to be over 25 dollars
I used to love the place!!!!
Brown Dog is always a good choice for my husband and me. The ravioli small plate was terrific - red curry sauce was perfect! My scallops were perfectly prepared with no sandy grit that often comes with scallops. His steak was delicious as were the accompanying potatoes. And this month they are doing Secret Santa! We got a gift card and some other promo discounts!!
We know we will always find an interesting menu and wine list at Brown Dog. The food is as good as any restaurant in Cincinnati. They also have the most interesting wine list in Cincinnati. We always find something different to try and it's at a very reasonable price. This was the 4th time that we have eaten there since they moved to Summit Park and it's a shame that the service never matches up with the food. Always the same issues - trying to take plates away before people are finished, bringing the entree when people are not finished with their salads, not replacing silver ware when dishes are taken away, and disappearing for 20 minutes at a time. Pretty much the same type of service that you would get at a chain sit down, table service restaurant. One good note about the service, we sat next to the kitchen and the guy (handle bar mustache) who was checking the food before it was served was excellent. You could tell that he was very proud of what he did. He brought us a sample of the soups that he had made that evening and they were outstanding. He also personally brought over our salads when he noticed that they had been sitting in the window too long because our waitress had not been checking for them. We'll continue to go to Brown Dog because of the food and wine. We especially like their seafood. Bluenose Grouper was the special that evening and in all of the years that we have been eating out, I've never seen it on a menu, not even in coastal towns like Charleston.
Grilled Caesar was fabulous as we're the burnt carrots!!! My friend got chicken wings and said they were very salty and not very good. Service was in the category of not very attentive, speedy or good at basics like when you bring coffee and milk, bring a utensil for stirring.
Our party of 4 was seated in a corner, which was perfect for us to talk and not be disturbed. Service wasn’t bad, and we were checked on frequently, but appetizers didn’t all arrive at same time (bread came long after soup...usually eat that together). Everyone enjoyed their meal, and the desserts were outstanding. My only complaint would be on the chicken that was added to my salad. I was told it was grilled, so I assumed warm. It was poached, cold and very dry. It feels like it was not made fresh for me, but pulled out of the marinade (strong) in the fridge. Disappointing for this level of restaurant. Salad was good, but I will never order an add-on protein, and do not recommend.
This restaurant should be top notch, but isn't. They charge $4.00 for bread and butter, which should be complimentary. We ordered a Mediterranean Pizza and the Tile Fish Special. Both were just okay. We don't feel like we need to rush back. The restaurant looks nice and service was fine. We have been there three times and have not noticed any improvement in the food.
The evening began with a very bad experience. We were never acknowledged at the hostess station. The hostess had a large party in front of us and she was on the phone. Once she hung up, she was ‘head down’ working from hand written notes and using the pc. When she finally finished, she responded to another hostess by handing her menus etc. I approached and asked if I could tell her we were there and had a reservation, another woman began talking and said she was a ‘walk-in’. She was seated first. We were next. Our issue is not the fact that she was busy, but the fact that we were ignored and no one apologized for the wait or the rudeness.
The wait staff was great and the food was very good.
Ordered the lamb, prepared well, food served hot. Service was not good, slow and order not revised properly. There was actually a large dog in the outside bar area. I saw many of the servers and restaurant staff, pet and play with the dogs. I pray they all practiced proper sanitary activity before handling food again. Frankly I see no reason to engage with an animal while serving or handling food for others. If you choose to do it on your own time, fine but not when I'm paying $35 for an entrée.
Unfortunately, had a less than stellar experience here the night before Thanksgiving. We had been to Brown Dog a little over a year ago and had a pretty good experience. We ordered entrees (pork chop, duck, and scallops) which were meh but nothing special. Not worth the price. Music was bar like and we noticed that everyone around us was eating burgers and pizza. Made for less than a nice dinner experience. Our daughter was in town for Thanksgiving and we had hoped to have a nice family dinner, but I could not recommend if that's what you're looking for. Maybe for pizza and beer but I doubt if we'll go back. Too many other options.
