About Brothers Restaurant at Red Barn
The Nichols brothers, Matt & Jeff, grew up in Ames, Iowa where their love of cooking, good food and a sense of family and community was nurtured.
The 2013 opening of their second Santa Barbara Wine Country restaurant, Brothers Restaurant at the Red Barn in Santa Ynez, allows them to offer visitors and locals alike great food, wine and hospitality. The brothers strive to have legendary service, innovative cuisine, and a welcoming and comfortable atmosphere that causes you to return time and again.
As chefs, the brothers continue to experiment with new dishes and cuisine, but always with that “from scratch”, homemade element. Fresh ingredients from local producers, a wine list that showcases the region’s award-winning wines and a comfortable and historically interesting atmosphere that takes you back to the romance of the old west. They want you to feel at home, and experience all the best of Santa Barbara’s Wine Country.

There were five of us at lunch , one of us had the beef dip, the meat had no flavor, it seemed to have been boiled. The roll was too fat ,and could not be dipped into the au jus , the au jus container should be a larger diameter! Some else had the fish and chips , he found the fish , very fishy in taste ! The portions are very generous and frankly are a little too large , in that , we took some away. The staff were very hospitable which was nice . Overall we had a good time . We hadn't been in the restaurant in several years , before we used to meet at the Red Barn for our Christmas meet , to exchange gifts , and did the same this year. We liked the remodel and the ambience has improved . Thank you for the opportunity to pass judgement , on your establishment , sincerely , Alan & Dorothy Wilks .
We didn't know what to expect and the pic of the resturant on the website made for a surprise inside. It was very nice! We were celebrating an anniversary and his ribeye was one of the best steaks he ever had. My prime rib was very good. The only item missing that I enjoy was a little a jus on the side. I didn't ask so perhaps they have it. Our deserts were all different and each one was very good. Service was very good for our group.
We are all planning to go back again.
We love this restaurant! We have been here many times and always have a great experience. This time my wife had the pan fried Dover Sole and I had the chicken. Both were amazingly flavorful. My chicken was moist and was of the best I've had anywhere. We finished with the mudpie which was their take on mudpie. It was perfect with caramel and chocolate drizzled over the ice cream. Also, our server, Teri, was friendly, attentive and helped make our experience a great one.
Choose Brothers based on previous reviews and we were not disappointed. This is a first class restaurant with great food and excellent service. We started with a romaine heart salad which we split and still had more than enough. Very tasty. We then had the 12 oz prime rib and Scottish salmon. The prime rib was extremely tender and prepared perfectly. Best I have had. The salmon was fantastic. My wife said that it was the best she has ever had. The service was spot on, answering questions with informative answers. Overall, don’t miss this restaurant as it is great.
Had a fabulous meal at Red Barn this weekend. I had the burger (which I often go there for!!), its very tasty - as are the french fries. My sister had an amazing Veal Chop - that was so big - we finished it for lunch the next day - perfectly cooked! Husband had Sole Piccata - also great. Servings are fairly large!
I must say the food was fantastic! There were four of us for dinner. We had the oysters,salads,soup,rack of lamb, rib eye & prime rib. Everything was wonderful! Also went to the bar for cocktails and the bartenders were friendly! Had the best mojito and my husband loved his Manhattan. Great place, pricey but worth it!
First time visitors. This place came highly recommended, so we were anxious to check it out. We were not disappointed! Glad we had a reservation, since the place was busy. We were seated right away at a nice table right across from the open kitchen. Menu choices were good. My filet mignon was awesome. My wife's parmesan-dill crusted salmon was excellent, and the portion was suitable for two. Good value wine list as well. Finished with a bananas foster bread pudding. Cheers!
Our meal and service was fantastic!
I had prime rib that was very tender and my wife had trout that just melted in your mouth. The sorbet for dessert was incredibly tasty (and since it was our anniversary they did not charge us for it) and they put it on a plate that said Happy Anniversary written in chocolate.
All around, the food, the service, the food presentation and the ambiance make this a wonderful place to celebrate.
We ate there for the first time for our sons birthday. My son and I had the Prime Rib and my wife had the New Zealand Lamb Chops. It was some of the best food we have ever had. The prime rib was outstanding, and my wife, who loves Lamb, says it was by far the best she has ever had. My son had calamari appetizer and my wife had french onion soup and both were excellent. If you have room for desert, try the Creme Brulee. Its made to perfection.
First visit and will not be the last! The service was outstanding —very attentive from the server and bus service. Best I have experienced in a long time. Food was amazing —had the special squash soup — so good. Also the tuna tartare and the stuffed chicken! The chicken was moist and very tasty with the goat cheese — and the mashed potatoes —OMG sooo good! Would definitely recommend!
We came up from Santa Barbara for lunch with friends. The burgers were excellent, especially the ones with melted Stilton and carmelized onions. They let us substitute salad for the fries if we wanted; those fries were darned good, too. A good wine list of local notables, fairly priced.
The service and food were great.
I was disappointed that the special request I added to my reservation did not get done. Apparently they either did not receive it or ignored it. Since I cannot confirm that they received it, I cannot fault them for it.
Also, this is not the place to go if you want to have quiet conversation. It is so loud while dining that the wait staff bends done to table level to talk to you so as to avoid having to yell over the ambient noise level.
Love the food at this place. We had the fried calamari and onions. It was more than enough for two and delicious. Then we shared a tuna tar tar which was great. I would order this every time. Finally we shared a rack of lamb. WOW!! I was cooked perfectly and the potatoes and carrots were wonderful.
The experience was great overall. The ribeye was nearly perfect. Done very precisely exactly how I ordered. You can tell it was very attended to while cooking but it still had character. Also ordered the salmon which came out great as well. I highly recommend this tuna tartare they have there. The calamari was a no go. Do not do the calamari unless you want to dig through onions to try to find the squid. They also forgot to give me the desert for my girlfriend’s birthday. It was supposed to be a surprise but the server totally forgot.
Matt, the chef created wonderful entrees for all us (15 diners). Consistently fine food. Great courteous, professional staff. It was especially nice when Chef Matt (one of the brothers) came to the table and greeted everyone. Gave us the opportunity to thank him for the marvelous meal we had. Whenever we are in the Solvang area, we always make it a must to have a meal or two at Brothers at the Red Barn Restaurant. You have to eat their jalapeno corn bread and Spring Rolls.
