Brother Jimmy's BBQ-New Brunswick Ratings and Reviews
Restaurant was in a great location next to the train station, below a parking garage and near one of the Rutgers campuses. I was seated in the dining area and ordered an appetizer of chips and spinach dip. Chips were cold and the dip needed salt and more cheese added as it was hard trying to scoop the dip onto the chips. Thumbs down to that. I tried their can't sugar cherry soda which was great. The fried okra tasted as if they were a bit green since they weren't tender enough when I bit into them. Ribs, BBQ chicken and fries were good though. Too bad I needed a doggy bag for the rest of my dinner. I was stuffed. The ambience is the usual that you see in a BBQ restaurant. I saw a sign that was posted up with 50¢ wings on Saturday's, Wednesday's was Rutgers night and so on. I'll guess that the restaurant gets packed on those days. Foe me, the restaurant was just ok.
Service was practically non existent. The table was tiny, we had to put our own dishes in the bussing area we were next to after the appetizer because no one came to take the plates or cups. Waited 10 minutes to pay for a beer at the bar that had only one other customer.
We have been a fan of Brother Jimmy's in New Brunswick for 2 years now. Our last visit was in August. The menu has changed and the quality of the ribs has really fallen. The ribs were dry and tasteless. the "not lean" brisket had NO meat. We were very disappointed. The hushpuppies and the Cheerwine were the highlights of the meal.
Please return to your earlier quality. This was awful.
I thoroughly enjoyed dinner at Brother Jimmy's BBQ. The food was delicious and the service top notch. My only grade lower than five stars because we were seated at a table next to the bar area and three ladies were sharing drinks just on the other side and it was like we were part of their rather loud conversation. I'll just ask for a seat away from the bar next time, but there will definitely be a next time.
We will never go back! I am from Louisiana...the cornbread was nasty. The hush puppies were a joke. The brisket was tender with no flavor. My kids would not eat their food. We sent back the nacho appetizer as the cheese & meat were dried out. The guacamole looked as if it were old.
The maple butter served with hush puppies was just strange. It was SO LOUD!!!!!!!!!
The server was very attentive and friendly and had the food prepared exactly as I requested. The BBQ burger was excellent as was the chipolte bbq sauce. I'd pass on the baked beans. They were just okay. There was a very nice selection of beers. My parking was covered by $2 since I spent over $20. If you go on Wednesdays bring your Rutgers university ID and get 25% off the food cost too.
When I ordered a Buffalo Trace old fashioned on the rocks the server brought me Buffalo Trace on the rocks; then she brought me a Manhattan, served up. Finally I got the drink I ordered initially, but the funny thing was that the two incorrect drinks were on the bill after dinner. Fortunately the food was on point, as always at Brother Jimmy's.
We went for the wing special on Sunday, but ended up enjoying a full meal. The BBQ was great and the service was friendly. This will be our go to spot when enjoying food with family and friends. It's also a nice spot to meet up for drinks and enjoy the game on TV.
Service was lacking. The cocktail server and the busser were more on their game then the main food server. Restaurant 101 ---- Hot beverages should never be delivered without a spoon and sugar. Food quality was ok however the taste as a result of a very heavy hand with salt was a fail. Prices heavy for the missteps.
Took forever to get our drinks and to get our food order in. Apps came out in decent time.
Brought out our dinner, and instead of removing app plates and tray, just handed us our food and wanted us to make room on the table for our dinners. All but one got their dinner. We had all finished and were asking for a doggy tray when they brought out the last dinner. Told them to wrap it because were finished. They took off that dinner plus 20% discount because we were so aggravated.
Went for lunch on a Sunday and had a good time. Food was good, although we thought the side portions were a little small. Husband loved the rib sampler. They have "all you can eat ribs" on Sunday, but we didn't try that.
Service was good and decor was spot-on.
We eat here regularly - the food is generally very good, especially the fried chicken and sides. But the expensive fancy drinks have become inconsistent again - the "Grand Strand Margarita" tasted like water - not tequila and fresh lime. We sent them back once and they came back the same, so we gave up. But for the price they need consistency and excellence.
We had a good lunch at Brother Jimmy's. The brisket sandwich was terrific and I like the various sauces you could add to it. The sides are great and you get more than a fair share of them! Parking is literally right above it- easy to get there, park and get out!
