BRINE, known for fresh oysters, crudo, and prime cut chops, is Caswell Restaurant Group’s second foray into the eclectic and innately New England dining scene of Newburyport, MA. Proprietor Nancy Batista-Caswell’s appreciation of the local harvest and her affinity for European classics results in a restaurant devoted to flavorful seafood—ceviche, crudo, sashimi, and beyond—and butcher chops, with a healthy dose of Spanish and Italian influences throughout the menu. The main attractions at BRINE are backed up by soups, salads, Po-Boys, and “off the page” daily specials to provide plenty of variety.
This neighborhood hangout welcomes all and leaves pretension at the door. The low-key design and elevated standards of service allow the food to speak for itself, and Manager Gissele Tache and her staff are always on hand to recommend an adventurous catch, a fine bottle of wine, or a sweet after-dinner treat.

Server was nice but made errors. Chef said food was safe for food allergy but it wasn't, and we only noticed after starting to consume it. The manager was not appropriately responsive or compensatory.
Fabulous dinner. Great wait staff, wonderful decor, incredible food!
Great new space! Very loud. Excellent food and service!
I had the Halibut and my husband had the Short Rib. We got the Grits to go with both and it was delicious! It was not a cheap meal but you get what you pay for right?
I'd recommend Brine to everyone, especially on Thursday nights after 8 PM.
Wonderful right across the board!
Great spot. We had dinner outside, but would have been equally happy inside.
Brine has always been wonderful but even better in its new larger space.
The food was good but be prepared to spend a lot of money for not a lot of food. To put it into context we had eaten a lunch BEFORE coming here so we didn’t leave hungry. The interior and exterior is very trendy and pretty. The volume inside was extremely loud mostly due to the blaring music. We could not hear our waitress or each other speaking. We are also a young group so can’t blame it on age just yet 😂 overall ok for a special occasion
Son’s high school graduation
The music was deafening!! Why would an upscale foodies place blast an 80's playlist when the acoustics were already really loud. I have been coming here for yours and love the new digs but the noise- level - both music and customers was awful. Please please please stop the loud music and do something about the acoustics.
New location, very noisy, tough to share conversation with your guests. Food was ok, portions small for price, generally overpriced for what you get. Remodel space is upscale. Not a steak house and they serve your steak (very good) on a plate with a small portion of steak sauce (nothing else, looks strange). Sides are extra, for the same cost better off going to a real steakhouse. Desserts were good, service was very good. I think they are going for tourist crowd and not looking for us local patrons. Many other great choices in Newburyport. Try Loretta (seafood) Mission Oak Grille (steak) Paddle Inn (creative menu) for excellent food and drinks at a more reasonable price point.
We had four small plates and sides which were imaginative and good, though the salad was forgettable. The eggs and bacon, seafood pate and roasted greens were great. It was ridiculously loud and the prices were on the high side, both of which were expected.
Delicious! It rained just before our reservation so they had a bit of overflow inside but they made it work for our party of four. The music was very loud so we were yelling at each other all night. Food was very good so we made do
While we were excited to dine at Brine in their new location having adored the original experience of dining at this restaurant, we were a bit disappointed by our experience. The cocktails were great and the food itself— though portions tiny for for the price—was overall quite delicious. However, the ambience of the former location is nowhere to be found. The restaurant is extremely, extremely loud, to the point that the two of us had to shout across the table at each other. The servers also seemed completely overrun. Our waitress returned every few minutes to ask us to place the remainder of our order, and she even warned us how long it would take for certain items on the menu to be prepared (essentially telling us that we were taking too long to order our main entrees). We were not lingering or taking excessive time by any means, so this really made us feel like we were just being rushed through so the next table could be seated. Unfortunately, the lack of personalized experience of dining and the noise level seriously detracted from our meal; and—unless dining can be guaranteed to be outdoor— I don’t know that we will hurry back for round two.
Great food, service and seating. Poor acoustics had to yell loudly to have a conversation with my husband.
Birthday Celebration! Love EVERYTHING about Brine!
The food and service were very good. The Octopus appetizer was tiny for $22.00 but everything was well prepared and the server was very friendly and helpful.
Amazing oysters, delicious entrees, exceptional service. Such a beautiful new space and great atmosphere. A favorite place in summer for us. Wine list is great too.
This was our 3rd visit since opening and it just keeps getting better, great new offerings!
Went on a Thursday night and it was great. Inside was quite loud w music and echo but would be fun for girls night out. My short ribs were delicious, side of fries very good, perfectly salty and hot. Also the cauliflower side was delicious. My husbands oysters were great but his 12oz sirloin seemed much smaller than 12oz to us. Like the size of a deck of cards. He said it was tasty but especially since it was a la carte, left him wishing for more. Always very tasty food and great service.
We dined at Brine to celebrate my wife’s 50th Birthday. Overall it was an excellent experience. The food was amazing and the service was fast, efficient, and polite. Before Brine moved in this use to be our go to breakfast place in Newburyport. The renovation is very tasteful and I liked that it echoes the look of the original place. Overall a really great experience!
Good to be back. The restaurant has a great build out and the foot is superb!!
Fresh, delicious oysters. Tasty cocktails. And a fun, relaxed environment. Will visit again and recommend to friends and family as well.
Excellent meal! Delicious, fresh and creative seafood! I would highly recommend!!!
Always good fresh seafood!!
The food is good. The renovations fabulous. Service is outstanding but omg, the music is so loud it makes it impossible to hold a conversation with anyone at your table. I seldom walk out of a restaurant but since my table mates and I were interested in hearing each other we began to leave. Fortunately, the waitress was able to seat us outside and we had an excellent meal. The wait staff was attentive and pleasant. I loved the old Brine and hope that the management will consider reducing the music level so I can continue to list Brine among my favorite Newburyport restaurants. Until then, I can't recommend it unless you don't care about eating with really, really loud music.
Beautiful outdoors. Fresh seafood. Excellent preparation.
Couldn’t wait for Brine to reopen and it did not disappoint! The new decor is clean and beachy bright. The food was delicious as always👏Well done!
As always, the owner and team did an amazing job with the decor of the space and the food was unique and so flavorful.
Re-opening of Brine in new space. Loved the atmosphere & food! Wait staff was attentive & energetic. Outdoor space looks very inviting. Overall, a wonderful experience!
thank you for the kind words and venturing back out
Cameron was awesome. 20 mins before oysters arrived, but wine service/wine was great, and dinner fabulous. A bit on the loud side - acoustic-wise...
Really like Brine and very excited to get back…new space, different vibe, fun! Food was really good…we had oysters (a little on the small side comparatively, pricey but shucked perfectly), shrimp, chowders and a couple crudos to start. Enjoyed the cod and halibut entrees as well….all delicious! Service had some hiccups (chowders served and had to ask for spoons, entree sides served with the oysters) but know those will be resolved as everyone gets back into the groove. Looking forward to going back, very energetic!
thank you for understanding that staffing is difficult at this time. But we are doing our best in our new digs.
It was great to have Brine open again! Halibut Crudo was amazing, Caviar biscuits were delicious. The Tuna special was one of the best seared tuna dishes that I have ever tasted, love the crispy potato strip wrap! Cannot wait to go back again!!
Great to be back!
Our party of 3 ordered 3 small plates, focaccia bread, cocktail, beer and wine. We dined in the outdoor seating. The menu is pretty small. Some positives were my fried oysters & egg were light and crunchy but the salsa verde did not really work well with the dish. The focaccia bread was good and the grilled avocado salad was good. The outdoor seating is on a busy Street so was noisy, but that was not under their control. Service was good, timely but our waitress was not very friendly and actually seemed a bit cold. We felt like she was a bit irritated that we were not ordering more rounds of food. Prices were on the higher side and there was also a $3 Covid surcharge. The 90 minute window is still in effect. We had to wait a long time for the shrimp cocktail to arrive as for some reason it was not ready yet for the diners. This was puzzling. Overall it was a good experience but not great. It is a very eclectic menu so I may not be for everyone.
Was excited to try Brine’s new location for my birthday. We sat right down for our 7:30 reservation. Ambiance was great but way too loud. We waited forever for our round of drinks and even longer for oysters that were just dropped off without even telling us which were which. Waiter never came over to ask how they were or take our dinner order. All and all, an hour and a half at the table and we never even had dinner. Left and went to Tuscan Grill.
Our experience was outstanding. We were shocked to hear this was the official opening in the new space. The service and food was flawless. The food is fresh and interesting, the space is fun and sophisticated. Well done!
So happy this restaurant is back bigger, brand new & beautiful! Very friendly staff & every bite was delicious!
The food is fantastic.
Our server was knowledgeable and friendly.
They were clearly understaffed so the service was slow. We waited 10 minutes before even seeing our server.
It was WAAAYYYYYY too loud.
