BRINE, known for fresh oysters, crudo, and prime cut chops, is Caswell Restaurant Group’s second foray into the eclectic and innately New England dining scene of Newburyport, MA. Proprietor Nancy Batista-Caswell’s appreciation of the local harvest and her affinity for European classics results in a restaurant devoted to flavorful seafood—ceviche, crudo, sashimi, and beyond—and butcher chops, with a healthy dose of Spanish and Italian influences throughout the menu. The main attractions at BRINE are backed up by soups, salads, Po-Boys, and “off the page” daily specials to provide plenty of variety.

This neighborhood hangout welcomes all and leaves pretension at the door. The low-key design and elevated standards of service allow the food to speak for itself, and Manager Gissele Tache and her staff are always on hand to recommend an adventurous catch, a fine bottle of wine, or a sweet after-dinner treat.

Limited menu but everything was very good. Didn't try the raw bar but it looked like a greaat place to try raw oysters if you like them

Everything is always so good at Brine, but this time I had Lobster Roe linguine, and it was insanely delicious. I will be thinking about it for some time, wishing I could have it again.

Nice atmosphere, service and food were great. Make a reservation! We had a reservation, but the restaurant kept turning away patrons even though empty tables were available.

Creative, unconventional food, good for a special occasion. We went early so no problem with crowd or noise.

Great restaurant. Fabulous and good selection of oysters which was our primary reason for going. Definitely want to come back for the specials on Thursdays. Remainder of the menu is somewhat limited, but still plenty of good choices. But the oysters were sublime. Friendly and attentive service.

Every time I visit Brine, the food is always fresh and creative. Oysters always top rate. Small plates to share with the table is a great way to taste everything.
Bravo!

This is the first time that we ate ate Brine and enjoyed the experience immensely. Although we have passed the restaurant many times in the five years they have been at this location, we never went in and regret not having tried it sooner. The hostess and wait staff are very friendly and helpful and are quite good in timing the various courses. They ensure that everything is alright without being intrusive. The food is superb. The serving sizes are not "massive", rather they are perfect for the incredible culinary experience that they provide. You will find a marvelous and innovative collection of dishes from the appetizers and crudos through the entrees. Bon appetit !!!

We dined at Brine Friday night for the first time, had a lovely waitress and loved the atmosphere. At times it was very loud but the music was great and we enjoyed the energy.

While the food presentation was stunning, I found the prices extremely high for what was plated. I actually left hungry. I also felt the wines by the glass were steeply priced at $15.

I work in the hospitality business so I am not unfamiliar with food costs and pricing. There are many dining options in downtown Newburyport. I would recommend Brine to a friend but would first suggest they look at the menu and recommend having a snack first.

We had a perfect meal. Great selection of oysters, a terrific salad and 2 fabulous entrees. This has become our new North Shore favorite.

Disappointing. This place used to be really good (although they continue to charge the “really good prices”). Clam chowder was incredibly salty. Octopus was terrible - the consistency of rubber bands. The cod was OK but really bland. The filet was good, but the meat was a bit mealy. I don’t know what happened, but this place is not what it used to be.

The food was delicious and the service was great. We were pleasantly surprised to have a dessert on the house in honor of my husband's birthday. The music was a bit too loud, which was the only drawback.

Reason for low ambiance rating— Biggest problem was that we were seated in the very leaky window nook on a frigid night. Made for a very uncomfortable experience and cold (expensive) meal.

My wife and I had an early New Year’s Eve dinner here and enjoyed it very much. The hostess was extremely pleasant and offered us a choice of the front window table or in the back. We chose the back as it was a particularly cold night. We shared a variety of oysters, beet salad, carrot soup, and the sausage of the day - all very good. Also tried and liked the Left Handed Milk Stout beer.
Service was attentive and friendly. Definitely will go back.

I was expecting a lot more for the hype on this place. While the environment and staff were great, for the prices I was expecting more. Got decent fish and chips plus an oyster roll which was on a massive bun with only 3 (yes 3!) fried oysters on it. I was expecting at least double that amount.

Went there with a large group as we were visiting friends- they accommodated us no problem. Everyone is just so kind here. Food is delicious - their steaks beat most of Boston steak houses. We each tried a different cut. Wine list was moderately priced. Worth every penny!

I was surprised to be able to get an 8pm Saturday night reservation at the last minute. Then we found out why. The restaurant was about 1/2 full and lacking ambiance and activity you'd expect for a prime time slot. The menu was certainly local but hadn't seemed to change much from the summer and needed a more seasonal makeover. We didn't order wisely for sure, but there really wasn't much comfort food for a colder November night. Raw bar, caviar, beet salad was all okay but the Power Tower of seafood was stingy and overpriced. The servers were knowledgeable but the food took a long time to come (odd given how empty it was) I may try again, but will wait for next summer.

We had heard mixed reviews about Brine and were curious to try it out so we thought what better time than during restaurant week. Sadly their fixed price menu was disappointing. It was almost as if they didn't want you to order from it. Our waitress wasn't very friendly and seemed very put out when we asked questions. Someone in our party asked if they could do a surf and turf entree to combine the fillet and scollops. She asked the chef and it was a flat out no. The two men in our parties ended up ordering a fillet each and then an extra entree of scollops which was a good thing because the portions are so tiny they would have been hungry. We ordered one appetizer -- large shrimp cocktail -- which were not very large at all. We all had salads and they were excellent. Overall the food was very good but there just wasn't enough of if. We had 2 cocktails each and the bill ended up being over $450. A friend who had said they didn't care for it noted that the bill for his wife and him was over $200 and they went home hungry. My other friend who loves it eats like a bird. So there you have it. If you're not a big eater and don't mind paying outrageous prices, you may be happy at Brine. It's very small and loud so be prepared. Such a shame...I was hoping I'd like it more but would recommend Poynt or Sea Level over Brine.

In a 30-seat restaurant, it should not take 30 minutes to get a cocktail. Table was wedged by door and host stand. Can't imagine how that must feel in the winter. Crudo was delicious. Scallops well over seared. Wine refill also took much too long. Manager comped it.
