BRINE, known for fresh oysters, crudo, and prime cut chops, is Caswell Restaurant Group’s second foray into the eclectic and innately New England dining scene of Newburyport, MA. Proprietor Nancy Batista-Caswell’s appreciation of the local harvest and her affinity for European classics results in a restaurant devoted to flavorful seafood—ceviche, crudo, sashimi, and beyond—and butcher chops, with a healthy dose of Spanish and Italian influences throughout the menu. The main attractions at BRINE are backed up by soups, salads, Po-Boys, and “off the page” daily specials to provide plenty of variety.
This neighborhood hangout welcomes all and leaves pretension at the door. The low-key design and elevated standards of service allow the food to speak for itself, and Manager Gissele Tache and her staff are always on hand to recommend an adventurous catch, a fine bottle of wine, or a sweet after-dinner treat.

Brine Ratings and Reviews
We had heard mixed reviews about Brine and were curious to try it out so we thought what better time than during restaurant week. Sadly their fixed price menu was disappointing. It was almost as if they didn't want you to order from it. Our waitress wasn't very friendly and seemed very put out when we asked questions. Someone in our party asked if they could do a surf and turf entree to combine the fillet and scollops. She asked the chef and it was a flat out no. The two men in our parties ended up ordering a fillet each and then an extra entree of scollops which was a good thing because the portions are so tiny they would have been hungry. We ordered one appetizer -- large shrimp cocktail -- which were not very large at all. We all had salads and they were excellent. Overall the food was very good but there just wasn't enough of if. We had 2 cocktails each and the bill ended up being over $450. A friend who had said they didn't care for it noted that the bill for his wife and him was over $200 and they went home hungry. My other friend who loves it eats like a bird. So there you have it. If you're not a big eater and don't mind paying outrageous prices, you may be happy at Brine. It's very small and loud so be prepared. Such a shame...I was hoping I'd like it more but would recommend Poynt or Sea Level over Brine.
In a 30-seat restaurant, it should not take 30 minutes to get a cocktail. Table was wedged by door and host stand. Can't imagine how that must feel in the winter. Crudo was delicious. Scallops well over seared. Wine refill also took much too long. Manager comped it.
I've never been disappointed eating at Brine. Fantastic food. Seasonal ingredients, made and presented beautifully. At this most recent visit, we sat outside (lovely weather) and I enjoyed the mussels (very fresh, delicious broth!) and panisses (great flavors, texture -- slightly crispy exterior, soft interior). Great wine list. Service was excellent.
We had been for lunch a few times and this was our first time for dinner. My husband had the duck special, which was fantastic. I had the salmon with mushrooms. I think it was the best mushroom I've ever tasted and the salmon was perfect. Started with delicious mushrooms. Service was friendly and very good. Highly recommend!!
Brine is a good small restaurant, unfortunately you pay for it in $$$$, which is why I gave it 3 stars overall. Prices are way too high for what you get. I would not find myself ever going back because at their prices there are so many other places to go and get more for the money.
We went for our anniversary dinner. Made reservations on line and was offered a tiny table for 2 near the door. A couple came in after us who also had a reservations and they sat at a four top . I guess they said they were a paty of three and the third person cancelled. Not sure if they figured out the system and knew how to get a bigger table. We opted to wait for seats at the bar. The bartender Molly was amazing. The food presentation was beautiful and the staff were kind just not sure we would make the trek again for dinner.
The noise level was so uncomfortable for everyone in my party including 17 year olds and 40 year olds. We waited an extraordinarily long time to get our entrees. Wait staff clearly uncomfortable and avoiding eye contact while rushing back and forth across thiis narrow crowded seating area. All around very disappointing.
Food was good but seafood - salmon and swordfish - were quite undercooked. Salmon went back. We don't like our seafood well done but we real don't like when it's gelatinous like. We liked the vibe. It's small and casual with nice little bar. Overall we were a little disappointed with extent of main entree selections. However, great selection of oysters and nice wine list.
The servers were nice but the place was busy and we waited quite awhile for each course. Two of the items we wanted were out of stock, so they comped an alternate dish which was a nice touch. Wine list excellent, oysters very good and nicely plated. We liked it and would return. The room is very loud, however.
brine is our favorite newburyport restaurant - great menu, good vibe and delicious, nicely presented food - generally 4 stars for me. last night i perceived the service to be unfriendly. it is also my 5th or 6th experience in the past 2 weeks where i felt hurried. i am not sure if it's just summer help or if it is the way servers are being trained but generally i like to order an appetizer and then decide on what's next. where small or sharing plates are involved i like to decide as i go along and i let this be known upfront. with the exception of restaurants with a perfect expediting service (for instance hugo's)
