This neighborhood hangout welcomes all and leaves pretension at the door. The low-key design and elevated standards of service allow the food to speak for itself, and Manager Gissele Tache and her staff are always on hand to recommend an adventurous catch, a fine bottle of wine, or a sweet after-dinner treat.
Brine is outstanding. Always outstanding!!!
Honestly we were disappointed. We've been to Brine before and really liked it even though pricey. This time there was a more limited menu; no specials. Tuna entree not as described. Nothing special especially given the price.
Dropped into Brine on a rainy Sunday afternoon to have lunch with a friend. We sat at the bar and the bartender makes the most beautiful drinks. Had a great time watching him make traditional cocktails in a traditional manner, they were delicious. We sat and enjoyed rounds of oysters and a fish and chips meal. The food was done very well, the staff was most pleasant and I only wish I could get there more often. Its a somewhat limited menu, but I am a survivor and always find something I can eat. Yes, I suppose it was a bit costly but I had such a good time, I didn't care.
First timers at this North shore Gem. Paul who was tending bar was also our server and was a wealth of knowledge concerning anything food related,Cocktails were tasty and On point. Two different Crudos to start, salmon with pear and basil and scallop with a green tomato sorbet that both my wife and I agreed was one of the best bites of our many tasty restaurant starters! Fresh oysters and clams on the half shell, and small plates of beef tartare and a scallop dish with jalapeno and shiitake's which indicated on the menu was served with a duckfat and brioche tuile but did not.
(disappointment) and was served in a scallop shell instead with no mention of the change kinda miffed at that being in the business myself but..fantastic experience overall
The food, service (special thanks to Karen and Jenny!) and ambience was simply fantastic! Can’t wait to come back!
We were very excited to try Brine. The hostess was pleasant. The oysters were yummy. But...The server had an edgy, cranky attitude. The entree was subpar. The halibut was extremely chewy which is an odd texture for such a fish. I would not go again.
Never a disappointment...always a wonderful dining experience! The creativity of the chef and his staff was outstanding. Plating was beautiful, flavors were perfection beginning with the bread, crudo and entrees continuing onto the dessert... especially when I chose the cheese cake and my hubby chose the oysters! Wait staff and Bartender can not be forgotten, they made our dining experience even more delightful...Thank you ALL!
Limited menu but everything was delicious. Rather noisy for a small venue due nothing to dampen the sound. Wait staff was superb. Problem is small portions for very high prices. Meal for 2 with 2 drinks per person was $150.
Excellent - and expensive. Wonderful assortment of oysters - must arrive early to get full selection. Special dishes were exceptional.
I don't need to go here again. I was treating friends to dinner...not there b/c I like oysters. I ordered the filet, medium well. Clearly a place where the chef doesn't care about the customer. Sent it back, came again rare. The piece of meat was lovely but I wanted it as ordered. As I was with people, preferred to just move on and leave as soon as possible. Way over-priced for the bad acoustics, uncomfy seating, lack of kitchen response and also for bad salt! A guest asked for kosher or sea salt, got iodized salt. Really?!
Slow service, uncomfortable seating. Food is amazing and more than makes up for these things.
We waited an hour for clam chowder appetizer.
Tomato soup and sausage dish of the day were the standouts!
Great atmosphere. Small but lively restaurant with excellent food. One of our steaks was overcooked and they immediately offered to redo it and gave us a comp crudo while we waited. Excellent wait staff and manager, we would definitely come here again.
Impeccable service and wonderful food made going out on a rainy Monday worthwhile!
Food was outstanding but the small plates are a little over priced, 18 dollars for 3 miniature scollops with nothing else.
I have been wanting to try this restaurant for some time now. Whenever I'm in Newburyport it's always busy and full of people. This time, I was smart and made a reservation beforehand. The food was delicious - my husband has very high expectations and he was pleasantly surprised. We came for oysters, but got not only oysters, but also prime steak and duck. Overall, great experience. It does get a little crowded and loud, so if you're looking for a quiet sit down place for dinner, this probably isn't the best option for you. The price is right for the food quality and services offered. I did have a great time and will go again this summer!
The food was outstanding, but eventhough the waitress told us that we would have to wait 15-20 min for the fillet mignon, it was closer to 45 min before we all had our dinners. I had carrot cardamon soup to start, then my husband and I had the sea trout and our friends had the filet and sword fish/mussels respectively. I am not clear what the issue was as the restaurant was not busy on a Sunday night.
Excellent food preparation and good service. Restaurant is small so make reservations. A very popular spot with a nice selection of seafood, raw and other dishes. We had littleneck clams on the half and a baked cod fish that was as well prepared as we have ever had. Would definitely go back.
Getting a bit bored with the same appetizers and salads. A menu additions would be appreciated. A bit noisy with the music as well.
Visited on a quiet weekday afternoon around 1pm. Very casual decor, fun! Raw oysters, clams were great. Clam chowder is creative and good if you’re looking for something non traditional however lacking in clams which was disappointing and it needed to be seasoned more, salt? Tuna appetizer with some sort of grapefruit pieces was just fantastic! I would order that, again. The fried oysters with egg were also excellent. I like the creative menu and would go again with more foodies so I can try more dishes.
Went for Easter brunch. Enjoyed the atmosphere the location and the ambience.Food was Outstanding. The softshell crab sandwich with house cured bacon was to die for. I also enjoyed the duck and fried oyster hash. When we are back in town we will likely go again
I got the 8oz fillet Friday and it must of been the best steak I ever had. Had a couple of drinks that were yummy as well. I definitely recommend this place for your oyster and steak cravings!
Been wanting to go to Brine for awhile and finally had the chance. The restaurant did not disappoint - food and service were outstanding and the caviar flight was a great value (don't hear that everyday) and very memorable. Look forward to going again soon.
Hands down the best restaurant in town. We're lucky to have such a gem in Newburyport.
Brine is great for freshly shucked oysters and excellently prepared seafood. My wife ordered duck and it too was cooked perfectly. The place is small and they try to make do with a single server. Otherwise all was great.
The food was excellent and the service was very good. Unfortunately, we were seated at the back right next to the restroom and the kitchen. The noise level was pretty high partly due to the music (Rock vocals which I like except when I am trying to converse with friends. This was my 3rd visit to Brine ... and indication that I genuinely enjoy the food!
A little over priced for what the food was. Also they need to find a new dish cleaner. Glasses and plates were dirty. The wait staff was great though.
I really enjoyed the bone in Ribeye steak and my wife the filet. We had a great appetizer of smoked salmon and a half dozen of Wellfleet oysters. If I had one complaint is that its noisy and small, so plan accordingly. It’s still my favorite restaurant.
Food is good but small portions and some are described as “small plates”
Some bread with the meal would have been nice for the price
I was still hungry when I left after a salad and “small plate” and $45
Enjoyed a great dinner Sunday evening.Oysters were excellent. My wife being allergic to any seafood had the filet which she deemed as perfect. My tuna was prepared as requested and too was perfect.
Cocktails were fine and wines from an extensive list were good and reasonably priced.
Lastly appetizers of soup and a salad met our expectations.
Additionally while my wife was at bridal shower I enjoyed an excellent fried oyster sandwich for lunch...
As always, the food and cocktails were great! Our Server, Karen was outstanding! Can’t wait to return, thanks again for a great evening!
Wonderful food. Pretty lousy service. Waitress was downright rude. For the cost, expected better.
We've eaten there quite a few times and it is ALWAYS STELLAR! Ambiance when you walk in, the staff is courteous and friendly. We had great cocktails, oysters of course, and the infamous "Bacon and Egg". it just gets better and better. The chef came out and chatted with us at the end of the meal and was great to talk to.
It was nice. A little loud and the food was a little over priced (but the location has something to do with that). The Waitress was very good.
I was disappointed in the portion of fish on the $18 fried fish BLT. It could have had another slice of bacon, as well. The sandwich was tasty, though, but the accompanying French fries were flaccid.
Absolutely amazing meal! Delicious cocktails and a creative and inventive menu.
Yes .. when it re-opens. We had to eat at Ceia and it wasn't the same as sitting at Brine.
When we arrived for our confirmed reservation, the restaurant was dark, there was a closed sign on the door, and a bag of garbage out front. Not sure what happened...
Outstanding food and service. Didn’t mind the relocation to 38 State St. look forward to going back to brine when they return home
