This neighborhood hangout welcomes all and leaves pretension at the door. The low-key design and elevated standards of service allow the food to speak for itself, and Manager Gissele Tache and her staff are always on hand to recommend an adventurous catch, a fine bottle of wine, or a sweet after-dinner treat.
Food was outstanding. The staff were super nice and friendly. A little pricey but on par with food in the area
Amazing meal end to end. Tuna was incredible and the veggies were mind blowing. Excellent service.
We are first time visitors to Newburyport. First visit to Brine. The restaurant was a major disappointment. On arrival were seated at a window table. Seemed nice enough. Turned out flies liked it too. Ordered cocktails. Attempted to order Canadian Whiskey sour. No Canadian whiskey. Ok, went with bourbon sour. It was awful - sent it back in favor of vodka tonic. When that arrived, it was vodka with a twist. Sent that back also. Decided on wine. Wine list preposterously overpriced. Ordered dinner. Similarly overpriced for what was advertised as a mid-price (two $$). Food was competently prepared. Service was episodic.
Food was innovative and stunning
Best oyster I have ever had: smooth, creamy, sweet. The bread had a crunchy flakey crust that made it extra delicious. The roasted cauliflower soup was smoky and smooth: it was the best cauliflower soup we have ever eaten. The cauliflower was cooked in a smoker and that flavor came through perfectly balanced with the soup. My husband had the filet with cornbread and huckleberry jam: it was delicious; the cornbread was almost a corn pudding, the filet was cooked exactly as ordered and the huckleberry jam was the erect complement. I had the halibut with apples and romanesco: the halibut was cooked simply but it was delicious; the dish was very good but wasn’t remarkable. The wine list is very good: some of our favorite California wines are on the list as well as a great selection of European wines.
Great cozy place in the heart of downtown Newburyport. My wife and I both had seafood entrees, tuna & halibut, which were delicious and a rightly portioned.
Its a small place so the noise level can be elevated. Extensive wine list and mostly on the high end. Great locale for meeting friend(s) for a sips of vino. Friendly staff, great ambiance, highly recommend.
Went here with a coworker for a nice casual dinner, the drinks and food were amazing and the atmosphere was lovely!
We had an awesome dining experience at Brine this past weekend.
The oysters were amazing, the atmosphere was ambient and the main course was delicious!
Try the corn cheesecake for dessert- you won't be disappointed!
Top quality food, cocktails and service. Chef was very accommodating to changes from the menu. I loved everything about it. Charming town too. And something that has never happened to me before, but a stranger at the bar did a "pay it forward" for our table by buying our two cocktails for us. God Bless him whomever he was. And my cocktail with the Jalapeno infused tequila was one of the best ever.
It had a good layout and 8 kinds of oysters to choose from. The lobster roll was good but could have used more mayo. The oysters were excellent and the beer and wine selections were also good.
Brine is a cozy, small, establishment in downtown Newburyport, MA. Space is limited, but we were able to get a table for two, via OpenTable for 6PM on a Friday night, with only 3 hours to go. They have a good assortment of seafood options. My seared salmon had an excellent wood taste.
We were here for first time! We were looking for a fresh sea food! However, we were disappointed after our dinner! I ordered the lobster bake and comes with chicken sausage that tasted horrible! The lobster tasted like was from costco lol anyways! We were just visiting here, so we are not coming back!
The food, service and atmosphere were great!
Been to Brine several times. Food is consistently excellent -- creative, delicious and a little surprising. Great service.
This was my third trip to Brine and I was a bit disappointed, the raw oysters were delicious and the server was very helpful in helping us choose from the daily selection. As always the wine list is interesting with fair serving sizes. We both had the haddock sandwich and this was where the disappointment started, because it was a little soggy, flavors seemed muddled and not fresh, maybe the roll was too big for the haddock. Usually I leave Brine excited to go back, next time I may try another seafood restaurant or maybe it was a one off lunch.
Very nice spot for fresh seafood -not cheap though. Bar seats are great.
This was our first time at Brine. The food was outstanding! Each dish was bursting with great flavors! My husband had oysters and clam & pork chowder to start. He also had the small plate of lobster salad, while I had the salmon. All were expertly executed. We finished with the flourless chocolate cake which was divine. Our server was great as well. Would definitely go back again.
My husband and I went to Brine for our anniversary dinner. It was not the right place for us. It was crowded and noisy. The food was pretty good, a bit on the pricy side. The service was on the slow side but we were not in a hurry. It would be a good place for 4-6 people. The tables are close together and it's a small space so groups larger than that would be difficult for them to accommodate. It was the romantic, quiet place that I had in mind.
The quality of the food and the preparation was good, as it has been in the past. Service didn’t seem to be on top of their game. Server confused my table with others on more than one occasion. Also when you order shrimp cocktail and the server brings your spouses appetizer first with the excuse that my shrimp cocktail was being prepared at a different food station and then after waiting for a while the server brings you your shrimp cocktail with only one shrimp and informs you that they had run out of shrimp, it is a clear indication that they didn’t have their act together tonight. Hopefully the next time will find that they have their act back on track.
The food and service were great however the portions were small and we left hungry. You need to order a starter.
I was hoping to top the night off with a desert and fill up. We ordered chocolate cake and received two small pieces - they looked like two pieces of candy with two tbs of ice cream on top of each. We literally each had two bites of desert.
Amazing service! We went out for our anniversary and couldn't have been happier.
Great food and service as always!
Completely under staffed. The food was fine, but the service was terrible in the entire restaurant. When you are paying $150 for a meal for 2, you expect better than this.
What a joke. Who wrote the past reviews family members?
Although the menu is limited, the food is fresh, delicious & top quality. There was a large party there at the time. Combined with its small space & lively music, the acoustics weren't great. Once they left, it went down several decibels.
Very good seafood
The lunch menu was quite limited . Sandwich, salad . The “CRUDO” , an Italian term for raw seafood , is a method of delivery , presentation and preparation, apparently not at Brine. The people were not aware of the term other than the definition . The server was pleasant as was the bartender. I’d give them another shot
Sorry, just okay. Maybe we ordered badly.
The food we chose was good, not great but we didn't eat much of what brine is known for. For example, didn't try the oysters. My friend had fish and chips which she said was wonderful, and looked like a generous portion. I had a few of her fries and agree that they were real homemade fries, perfectly crisped. I am a vegetarian and had scoped out the menu in advance and was looking forward to a batter-fried avocado sandwich but it was not available. I settled for the vegetarian soup of the day: fresh pea soup made with creme. This was very fresh but lacked seasoning to make it stand out. I also had an odd salad of greens and cheese which was more cheese than greens. I asked if there was any bread and was told they would make some toast for me. I didn't really understand why I couldn't just have bread but okay. And finally, they were out of the chocolate dessert so we skipped that. So lunch for two,, no wine, cocktails, oysters, or dessert: $49.00 before tip.
Best of Newburyport. Fun place. Always a hit when we bring friends.
Brine is our favorite in Newburyport and the North Shore. Ask for a high top! We go there frequently!
Best dining experience in Newburyport. First rate food, service and drinks.
We visited Brine on a Friday night in the Summer...basically prime time. The drinks were excellent and so was the food. The service was great at the beginning but as the place got busier and busier it definitely slowed down. We waited around 20 minutes for our dessert to arrive however we understood since it was very busy. Other than that this is our second time at Brine and the oysters and food never disappoints!
While cocktails and food are above average, and the oysters fabulous, on balance the cost of eating here outweighs those factors. For my dollar, I prefer SeaLevel also in town.
Our meals very absolutely delicious, as always! We go every year for our anniversary....and in between if possible. Our waitress was attentive, knowledgeable and delightful! Highest recommendation!
Super crazy busy, this restaurant isn’t as good when it’s that busy, it truly affected both the food and service. I still like the restaurant and will continue to go, but will skip
It if it is that busy.
My friends and I had a wonderful time dining at Brine. The oyster selection was great, the cocktails well balanced, and the food was beautiful as well as delicious.
This is our second time at Brine. Agian the food was absolutely delicious, but the service was a not as good. It is a very small restaurant. We sat at a table right next to the door. It was so close that at one point it swung into the table . Luckily our drunks were full at the time . Then it took over 30 min for our appetizers. We finally had to ask the hostess for some bread because it had seemed that our waiter had disappeared.
Once the apps arrived they were fantastic. I had the scallop and my husband the bacon and egg oysters. For dinner I had the perfectly seared Tuna and my husband the caviar.
This was our third time visiting Brine and it certainly did not disappoint . We came for our last date before baby comes and it was fantastic. We had exceptional service, and the kindest waitress. The bar tender even offered to make me a mock-tail not on the menus which was out of this world!
For dinner I got the Mezuna salad and Salmon which were both absolutely amazing. My husband got Tuna crude which was to die for and the striped bass special entree, which was phenomenal.
Our only complaint is the entrees were a touch over priced. We will be returning soon
Great oysters, home made soup , salad. My partner had a wonderful steak done perfectly. Nice wine list. Service top rate. Love this place!
Lovely restaurant and staff. Food was outstanding... packed to go. Thank you to Brine for accommodating us during a medical issue. We so appreciate your understanding and help. All is well and we will return.
