BRINE, known for fresh oysters, crudo, and prime cut chops, is Caswell Restaurant Group’s second foray into the eclectic and innately New England dining scene of Newburyport, MA. Proprietor Nancy Batista-Caswell’s appreciation of the local harvest and her affinity for European classics results in a restaurant devoted to flavorful seafood—ceviche, crudo, sashimi, and beyond—and butcher chops, with a healthy dose of Spanish and Italian influences throughout the menu. The main attractions at BRINE are backed up by soups, salads, Po-Boys, and “off the page” daily specials to provide plenty of variety.
This neighborhood hangout welcomes all and leaves pretension at the door. The low-key design and elevated standards of service allow the food to speak for itself, and Manager Gissele Tache and her staff are always on hand to recommend an adventurous catch, a fine bottle of wine, or a sweet after-dinner treat.

Food was great however the server needs training.
Excellent service, cocktails, and food. We enjoyed eating outside on the patio by heat lamps.
Anna thank you- Patios will be available until 10.28.21 !
We have been to the place before. The food was better. We were a little disappointed with the food last night. It wasn’t worth the amount we paid.
The food was really great, except the dessert which was just ok.
Glad to have outside dining.
Service was great.
Everything was great from service to the food. My only concern was pricing was high.
Lynda, thank you for your kind words. We are experiencing considerably high costs from our vendors during these trying times we hope to see a decline in some costs by the new year.
Great experience with friends
Michael , thank you for your kind words! we are trying our best!
Brine is back! We snagged an outdoor table (how much longer can that last), and were delighted by the menu options. The Lobster Fried Rice and Duck Legs were exquisitely prepared. The Thursday oyster special brought us in, and the high quality at Brine will keep us coming back. From a friendly and well-trained waitstaff, to adequate wine and beer selections, and food fit for foodies, Brine sparkles. Thank you!
As always, the most reliable fine dining in Newburyport. Brine still retains the casual but upscale ambiance of most suburb spots but the food and service are just notches above anywhere else.
This was our first experience at Brine and we would say it was incredible! The wait staff were knowledge about the food and prep. The chef is very creative and everything from apps to sides to entrees to dessert was fantastic! Will definitely be back when we are in the area.
Nice place to dine for dinner. Food was great. Service was decent and atmosphere lovely.
My friend and I enjoyed our dinner at Brine. The menu is not extensive, but the food is delicious. Our waitress was attentive and patient. Love this place! We
Excellent service at the bar and table. Fun vibe. Delicious food - especially the duck legs!
Many of the menu items were out which was a bummer but what we did have was delicious!!! Great energy. A fun and modern spot that feels like you could be in the city. Can’t wait to go back.
Outstanding food and service start to finish. Friendly staff were extremely knowledgeable about menu and attentive. We will be back (frequently).
Incredible food and personable, knowledgeable staff. I very much look forward to returning!
Interesting food excellent preparation, presentation and service. The place is too loud for a restaurant. The prices are a bit high even for Newburyport and I understand rotating the menus but why totally rotate the signature cocktails menu? Especially if you do not offer the last "signature" drinks. Change is critical but too much rapid change has helped close downtown restaurants often over the years
Lovely place with great ambiance inside and out. Food terrfic.
For buck a Chuck be prepared! The oysters are no bigger than a dime
Beautiful new interior, noise level really needs help
Great service! Great Food! Love the new space and look forward to dining outside soon! Thanks for a fabulous evening.....So fun to be back!
Our first time back since the restaurant expanded, well done but a tad loud, but it was Saturday night.
Wait staff made an extra effort to ensure one of our allergies was accomodated.
Swordfish milanese was an interesting preparation, very good.
We will be back!
Great experience! Lovely greeting by hostess, Seated at high top near bar. Our server Paul was awesome.
We ordered a few apps and for dinner choices we selected all seafood options: swordfish, lobster fried rice & branzino. All meals were delicious and cocktails were tasty. We will be back soon!
Meghan is an all star! ⭐️ We sat at the bar, and her personality and her clear enthusiasm for the food, the wine, and the experience really made everything so enjoyable!! The food as always was flavorful and executed flawlessly! I had a relatively new menu item, which was cooked perfectly—please enjoy the Swordfish Milanese if you go—the flavors are perfect!
Excellent selection of crudo, including tuna, hamachi and salmon. Eggs and bacon dish with fried oysters was very creative.
Unquestionably and consistently the best restaurant in Newburyport. Oysters, crudo, entrees and wine choices are all superb, as is the service. We ate outdoors on a beautiful night, but they promised to seat us indoors if it rained. We've never had a bad experience in all the years we're dined there! It's our go to!
Music was to loud. Hard to carry on a conversation.
Delicious but stingy portions sting at this price level.
I think it was $36 for 7 oz of steak. Really. That would be $72 for a normal size steak. My medium rare steak arrived rare, I mean mostly raw. They serve it cut it for you so it's plain to see. We sent it back and after some time got the same pieces a little more done but cold. I guess it sat around for a while after some more cooking.
Clam chowder with pork belly was a good concept but for $9 you'd expect more than 4 clams and 3 little cubes of pork belly in a big cup of cream soup.
We were still hungry for dessert, but balked at paying I forget how much for what would probably be a thimble-full of ice cream or flan. We went round the corner had had some gelato and all was well in the world.
Menu for dinner was very limited , portions of food very small , glass of wine was 1/4 filled , $15 . Below average experience
Very nice food. the serve went out of her way to make us happy!
Loud! Too loud.
Slow service. Inconsistent: hurrying us early on in the evening, stopping by less & less as we waited for the main course, & waited some more.
Small plates were the highlight, both interesting & delicious.
Great service from our server! Food was very good but small portions. Lobster fried rice was delicious but was skimpy on the lobster. Wine was delicious but all very expensive. Had appetizers, main, split a dessert and was hungry later. Atmosphere fun and busy.
Nice but expensive.... not sure I would strongly recommend.
We had a great lunch! We got the octopus, burrata, beef Tatar and chowder. We liked all of the dishes except the burrata. I felt like it lacked flavor. Also I felt like the price was a little bit steep for the amount of food you received. I also got the tequila drink and that was delicious. Our waitress was very sweet.
We were there midweek. Branzino dish was very well executed. I had not seen the Banana leaf prep done before, and the “Nardello” peppers were a nice touch.
Ask for the warm potato salad - we had it w/o any mayonnaise- was really outstanding without the mayo.
We’ve been here roughly five or six times and every meal great. Last night was different. Seated at 7pm and waited about 10 minutes for service in which we ordered drinks and oysters. No complaints - both were great. Then we ordered our entrees and it took close to 45 minutes for them to arrive. I had the branzino which was excellent but not hot. My husband had the lobster bake which was a deconstructed dish with corn chowder in a bowl. It was tepid in temperature, which ruined the dish. We told the server and she said it’s supposed to be that way. No thank you, a chowder should be hot. Then we asked for bread for my husband to finish the dish with, aka sop up all the chowder. No bread! They were all out. How as a restaurant do you run out of bread? The server deep apologized and did offer us a free dessert but it was already after 9 pm and we were exhausted. I’m so sad, I used to love this place. And I know right now it’s hard with a small workforce and messed up supply chains, but for the love of god, if your going to charge over 30 dollars for a tepid chowder dish have bread. It may take a while to want to go back.
Our waitress was spectacular!
Great night. Ended up at the bar. Oyster prices high, but to be expected.
From the moment we walked in, our experience was exceptional. The staff was gracious, the bartender was very friendly and the manager stopped to see how we were enjoying our evening.
Menu choices were eclectic and excellent! Front desk was beyond accommodating, service exceptional and food was ‘lick your plate clean’
Pricey but well worth it.
Next, we will be back for Thursday’s dollar oysters and plan more family events in the future.
Excellent yellow tail crudo and sardine & avocado toast and some of the best bronzino we’ve every had. Drinks also were a hit. Ambiance and service made it a complete experience that was worth the splurge.
We sat outdoors next to the building in which the restaurant is housed. this placed us on the sidewalk where pedestrians walked. There was additional outdoor seating nearer to the street which wasn't as exposed to the pedestrian traffic. The outdoor atmosphere was fun on a busy Friday night but the tables next to the buildings seemed 'in the way" of pedestrians, baby strollers, dogs and walkers making the area seem cramped and congested.
The food was good and the menu was not-your-ordinary-seafood selections. Service was quite good--prompt and attentive without being intrusive. Restaurant was described as $$$ which it was.
We took friends. We like the new location, pleasant, airy, comfortable. We shared the sweet bread (okay) and the warm potato salad (a real hit!) as appetizers. I had the bluefish, which was excellent, fresh, beautifully prepared and presented. The others had a special, a Wagu beef burger, which received good reviews. The drinks were excellent, and the wine list is extensive. We definitely will go back.
Gripper thank your for taking a second out of your day to offer such a glowing review.
