This neighborhood hangout welcomes all and leaves pretension at the door. The low-key design and elevated standards of service allow the food to speak for itself, and Manager Gissele Tache and her staff are always on hand to recommend an adventurous catch, a fine bottle of wine, or a sweet after-dinner treat.
Tomato soup and sausage dish of the day were the standouts!
Great atmosphere. Small but lively restaurant with excellent food. One of our steaks was overcooked and they immediately offered to redo it and gave us a comp crudo while we waited. Excellent wait staff and manager, we would definitely come here again.
Impeccable service and wonderful food made going out on a rainy Monday worthwhile!
Food was outstanding but the small plates are a little over priced, 18 dollars for 3 miniature scollops with nothing else.
I have been wanting to try this restaurant for some time now. Whenever I'm in Newburyport it's always busy and full of people. This time, I was smart and made a reservation beforehand. The food was delicious - my husband has very high expectations and he was pleasantly surprised. We came for oysters, but got not only oysters, but also prime steak and duck. Overall, great experience. It does get a little crowded and loud, so if you're looking for a quiet sit down place for dinner, this probably isn't the best option for you. The price is right for the food quality and services offered. I did have a great time and will go again this summer!
The food was outstanding, but eventhough the waitress told us that we would have to wait 15-20 min for the fillet mignon, it was closer to 45 min before we all had our dinners. I had carrot cardamon soup to start, then my husband and I had the sea trout and our friends had the filet and sword fish/mussels respectively. I am not clear what the issue was as the restaurant was not busy on a Sunday night.
Excellent food preparation and good service. Restaurant is small so make reservations. A very popular spot with a nice selection of seafood, raw and other dishes. We had littleneck clams on the half and a baked cod fish that was as well prepared as we have ever had. Would definitely go back.
Getting a bit bored with the same appetizers and salads. A menu additions would be appreciated. A bit noisy with the music as well.
Went for Easter brunch. Enjoyed the atmosphere the location and the ambience.Food was Outstanding. The softshell crab sandwich with house cured bacon was to die for. I also enjoyed the duck and fried oyster hash. When we are back in town we will likely go again
I got the 8oz fillet Friday and it must of been the best steak I ever had. Had a couple of drinks that were yummy as well. I definitely recommend this place for your oyster and steak cravings!
Been wanting to go to Brine for awhile and finally had the chance. The restaurant did not disappoint - food and service were outstanding and the caviar flight was a great value (don't hear that everyday) and very memorable. Look forward to going again soon.
Hands down the best restaurant in town. We're lucky to have such a gem in Newburyport.
Brine is great for freshly shucked oysters and excellently prepared seafood. My wife ordered duck and it too was cooked perfectly. The place is small and they try to make do with a single server. Otherwise all was great.
The food was excellent and the service was very good. Unfortunately, we were seated at the back right next to the restroom and the kitchen. The noise level was pretty high partly due to the music (Rock vocals which I like except when I am trying to converse with friends. This was my 3rd visit to Brine ... and indication that I genuinely enjoy the food!
A little over priced for what the food was. Also they need to find a new dish cleaner. Glasses and plates were dirty. The wait staff was great though.
I really enjoyed the bone in Ribeye steak and my wife the filet. We had a great appetizer of smoked salmon and a half dozen of Wellfleet oysters. If I had one complaint is that its noisy and small, so plan accordingly. It’s still my favorite restaurant.
Food is good but small portions and some are described as “small plates”
Some bread with the meal would have been nice for the price
I was still hungry when I left after a salad and “small plate” and $45
Enjoyed a great dinner Sunday evening.Oysters were excellent. My wife being allergic to any seafood had the filet which she deemed as perfect. My tuna was prepared as requested and too was perfect.
Cocktails were fine and wines from an extensive list were good and reasonably priced.
Lastly appetizers of soup and a salad met our expectations.
Additionally while my wife was at bridal shower I enjoyed an excellent fried oyster sandwich for lunch...
As always, the food and cocktails were great! Our Server, Karen was outstanding! Can’t wait to return, thanks again for a great evening!
Wonderful food. Pretty lousy service. Waitress was downright rude. For the cost, expected better.
We've eaten there quite a few times and it is ALWAYS STELLAR! Ambiance when you walk in, the staff is courteous and friendly. We had great cocktails, oysters of course, and the infamous "Bacon and Egg". it just gets better and better. The chef came out and chatted with us at the end of the meal and was great to talk to.
It was nice. A little loud and the food was a little over priced (but the location has something to do with that). The Waitress was very good.
I was disappointed in the portion of fish on the $18 fried fish BLT. It could have had another slice of bacon, as well. The sandwich was tasty, though, but the accompanying French fries were flaccid.
Absolutely amazing meal! Delicious cocktails and a creative and inventive menu.
Yes .. when it re-opens. We had to eat at Ceia and it wasn't the same as sitting at Brine.
When we arrived for our confirmed reservation, the restaurant was dark, there was a closed sign on the door, and a bag of garbage out front. Not sure what happened...
Outstanding food and service. Didn’t mind the relocation to 38 State St. look forward to going back to brine when they return home
Outstanding Chowder & Tuna. We were visiting Newburyport and this was recommended. Very impressed with the food and service. Possibly the best Chowder I have had! And the tuna was cooked to perfection. Will definitely revisit when we are next in town. Well done :).
Always great food and drinks. Bacon and egg salad with fried oysters, scallop roll, chicken Caesar salad--all terrific. One of the best beef filets anywhere. We've never been disappointed!
We arrived a bit early for our 8 pm reservation, but we were happy to wait at the bar till our table was ready. Food was excellent and service was outstanding - our server was helpful and even promptly found a solution to our wobbly table. We had a flight of caviar (which we ate separately from the blinis, which were delicious but muted the other flavors), then a few small plates (we especially enjoyed the crab) and shared the duck special and dessert. More than enough food, but the courses came just spread apart enough not to overwhelm. It was a lovely pace for a date night. We will go back!
For raw bar fans the Power Tower is a treat. The crude of the day is often very interesting. BTW - to get 5 stars from me, the meal has to be truly exceptional. That said, Brine is excellent!
Food was great, waitstaff great, nice atmosphere but too pricey to go on a regular basis
The food was mediocre and the portion was too small. We had Pho and it didn't have any noodles.
My mother sister and I were in Newburyport for weekend away, and we wanted someplace a little eclectic for dinner. Brine filled the bill perfectly! Charming place even if it was a little loud, the menu was diverse and very farm-to-table. Our server was extremely helpful as we had lots of questions. I and my sister had the swordfish which was unbelievable. Absolutely delicious! My mother had the chicken and she said the same - the sauces and garnishes that they use are truly one of a kind. We thoroughly enjoyed our time at Brine and will be back.
I would recommend Brine if the diners were interested in oysters and the small plates. The oyster options were a good size and very flavorful. The dinner options were less desirable and lacked the value for the money. The swordfish was a small, overcooked portion and odd consistency. The scallops in the Seafood Bouillabasse were overdone and should served with a crusty bread to enjoy the juice; not the spicy house focaccia. The flavors do not complement each other.
Excellent food as always. My husband and I went for PHO night! Delicious. Best place for oysters, too!! We felt a bit “hovered-over” by our waitress. She took our oyster playe before we were done. I was still holding an oyster. We felt somewhat rushed.
Have eaten here multiple times - great cocktails, great oysters and starters. Enjoyed very much and will be back!
We love Brine, we were seated at a window seat which would be wonderful in the summer but wished we had requested to move as it was very cold, I ended up wearing my coat for the entire meal and I swapped seats with my fiancé who ended up sitting in the window seat. The rest of the restaurant was quite warm! We both ordered the Monk fish special which was just ok but not up to Brine’s usual and we love the food at Brine so was a little disappointed. Oysters were fabulous.
Excellent food, perfect sized portions. Great variety of oysters which were delicious. Friendly waitstaff, fast and attentive service. Extensive bar menu...hot toddy hit the spot!
