In Philadelphia, the taste and tradition of Italy is brought to guests of Brigantessa from the pizza masters of Napoli to the seafood-centric Puglia. The center of the restaurant is a large brick oven created by Italian craftsmen and from which nearly all the dishes at Brigantessa are cooked. The welcoming servers, the warm atmosphere and the unpretentious food create an excellent dining experience.
The pizza Napolitano, created in 1889, made of basil, tomato and fresh mozzarella is representative of the red, white and green Italian flag. Brigantessa creates the pizza Napolitano with the same precision and affection for pizza greatness as those Italian ancestors who created it. Other menu items include antipasti, and two course options such as gnocchi or lasagna with braised goat or grilled swordfish.
We had a great time at Brigantessa and the food was wonderful. This a must go restaurant in Philadelphia.
Thank you thank you thank you!
Our 3rd visit, this time they just phoned it in .Plates arrived lukewarm, octopus and burrata good, pizzas ok, little hat pasta stodgy, Ragu congealed and tasteless. Disappointing.
This is Francis Cratil Cretarola, one of the owners of the restaurant. Did you report your disappointment to your server or the manager? I ask because your complaints did not appear in the end of day report, which is part of our routine. We would have wanted to address your displeasure in the moment. Though we are nearly at the end of our run (the business has been sold), it is still important to us to deliver a quality experience. Thank you for your previous patronage.
Not what it was a few years ago. The service was off— waited a long time for the hostess to greet us, for drink orders to be taken, for dinner order to be taken, for dessert order to be taken. Simple meal with a friend was over 2 1/4 hours. Appetizer arrived after the entrees— comped but still strange. Food was pretty good but not like I remembered. This used to be my go-to place in the neighborhood but I don’t think it will be anymore.
So, it's not easy to get there (unless you are already in South Philly) and when you walk in, the ambiance is underwhelming, kind of generic neighborhood bar. But, the food is amazing. We started with the octopus which had a great grill char, a delicious sauce and a radicchio salad. The little "hats," spinach pasta with lamb ragu was perfect. The hats hold the sauce which is really good--subtle but rich and flavorful. The pizza is super thin crust. Ours had great pork sausage, fresh basil, light sauce and these ridiculous pizza dough balls filled with ricotta. My son couldn't stop eating it--and we ordered an extra one to take with us. The service was friendly, informal and nicely paced. Definitely worth the effort to get there--and find a parking space.
We had a tasty, casual meal with friends we hadn't seen in too long. Brigantessa is made for such experiences!
Amazing experience. I came here with my friends for dinner. Great presentation and services
Great happy hour pricing and timing. Would be a tad expensive for what you get if it wasn't during happy hour. Great food and drinks though. Cute little place on Passayunk.
Great spot for happy hour
We love this restaurant. Great neighborhood spot. Nice for dates. Cozy, sophisticated. Good food.
I come here all the time with my boyfriend or family. Top 10 fav restaurants
Meh. Meatballs were overcooked, pizza was a bit burnt. So so service.
It took 45 minutes to get a glass of water
The food carries the place — all courses were very good. What the pasta courses lack in portion size they make up for in quality. The desserts excelled. The place is not that efficiently constructed — kitchen and bar are downstairs, and most diners sit upstairs. That means that drinks and food need to be ferried upstairs, and the restaurant could use more staff. The servers they have are pleasant, but they did not have the time to be all that attentive. Overall, a good experience and we will go back.
First time there. Everything was excellent. Best arancini I ever had. Great place, was our first time there. Will be back soon.
Dinner with friends from Australia!
Everything that wasn’t pizza was delicious, in particular the black garlic gnocchi. Simple tasty fare in a low key setting
The pizza was excellent. We went for dinner, but sat at a high top in the bar area. To our surprise, we were able to take advantage of the happy hour specials which were an excellent deal. $6 house wines, $8 basic pizzas. Well be back!
Always a delicious meal with great service. One of our favorites in East Passyunk.
Great service and delicious food and wine. Loved the chill / no frills / no pressure vibe downstairs!
I feel like maybe something happened to cause everything to break down. Unfortunately no one said anything so we were frustrated with the wait for food only to get dishes that seemed rushed and over cooked. I’m disappointed i chose this place for my birthday dinner.
Best brussel sprouts I ever had ! Pasta dishes are top notch ! Would like if they had a Cabernet or Zinfandel on the wines list ! Otherwise 5 stars
Food was excellent!
Short staffed so service was really bad. Waitress was very apologetic but ruined our night
Great. Coming back
Food was delicious, out quickly, and full of flavor! Our waiter Sean was a delight.
As always a great dinner.
On our very first impression, we were seated by a woman who was dressed as if she was cleaning her house. Her sneakers were filthy. Our food was taken to our table by a woman who was very rude. However our waitress was fantastic and the food was excellent. We would definitely go back but highly suggest that the front of the house staff be retrained.
Went here and sat at high top next to street! Great pasta as usual and the best Brussel sprouts I ever had ! With the Calabrian Chile ! I can taste it now ! I’ll be back!
We wanted to bring our visiting California friends to a great Philadelphia restaurant in a real neighborhood. Brigantessa made Philly shine! The pizza was out of this world and our friends said the Brussels sprouts were the best they’ve ever had. Nice wine selection, too!
Early dinner before we headed to Citizens Bank Park for a baseball game. Waitress Katie was great and the food was delicious.
2nd visit to the restaurant. Pizza & entrees arrived before appetizers. Great waiter who recommended drinks and entrees. Extremely noisy. Deserts were above average. 3 out of 4 pizzas ordered were just average .
Casual setting with excellent pizza- seriously this stuff is good. Wait staff was friendly, accommodating and helpful.
One of the best spots in the city. Pizza is incredible. Try the brussel sprouts.
Wish that the portion sizes were a little larger for the price paid, but the food was delicious and the service was great.
Food was just great! Every dish was delicious and creative. Service impeccable. One of the best in Philadelphia.
Grab a seat at the counter, wood fired pizza oven at the ready. Strike up a conversation with the pizzaioli as they make your pizza. Takes about 2 mins tops to bake. Also able to whip up a tasty bowl of bucatini and fresh tomato sauce for one of my kids. So good!
Delightful atmosphere, low-key but with delicious food! From the olive oil bread onward!
A great spot Inn south Philly with awesome food and service. Would totally recommend to others!!
Loved it! Music was a little to loud.
Lively atmosphere good for conversation. Small plates are fun to share and try an assortment of dishes. Pastas are delicious and flavorful.
