Brennan's of Houston Ratings and Reviews
If you request a reservation through Open Table be sure to request a table on the first floor. We were put in a room on the second floor with very little ambiance. I was disappointed to say the least. I was also expecting live music for Sunday brunch. Apparent we had just missed the live music at noon and caught one song just as we were about to leave.
As for the food it was OK. Everything tasted a little too sour: the turtle soup and the salad. The Eggs Sardou were too bland tasting. I needed to request some lemon to add tang which was missing.
Perfect in (almost) every way. Attentive, efficient, charming service. Delicious food. Attractive setting. Only problem was a nearby table of five drunken and obese women who screamed at each other nonstop. Disgusting and offensive to us (and to Brennan’s waitstaff). But the good outweighed the bad and we had a lovely time. Our waiter Valentin did a superb job for us. Several other waiters stopped by to assure our comfort as best they could, always rolling their eyes at the shrieking harridans nearby. No idea what Brennan’s could do about this other than be sure that whoever reserved that table of vulgar women is not able to arrange a repeat performance. We’ll be back. We loved (almost) all of it!
We had friends from DC in town and wanted to take them here for their Sunday jazz brunch that we had heard so much about. We end up being seated in a small room upstairs away from the jazz band - the WHOLE reason we had come! We asked both the hostess and our waiter if the jazz band was going to come up to the room to play and they assured us they would make their way around the restaurant. About half way through our meal the jazz band comes up and plays happy birthday to the table next to us. They played one more song to that table that they clearly knew personally -their backs turned to us the whole time - before leaving. It was the whole reason we came to this place and with only about 2 minutes of music, it was extremey disappointing. I wish the hostess or waiter would’ve told us the truth when we asked because we would’ve just left. Sorry, I don’t count happy birthday songs to another table as entertainment for the room.
As always our meal was astonishingly wonderfull. The red snapper Pontchartrain was delectable—perfectly cooked and so deliciously enhanced by crispy oysters and crab. Our server Jeremy skillfully guided us in our selections and just the right wine as well as being perfectly charming.
Great menu with variety of special dishes, some creole, some not. Have to go with the turtle soup or wedge salad to start. Entrees range from steak to creole seafood. All of our entrees were excellent. Then the desert show with the banana's foster is a delight...not to mention this desert here is amazing. Add in the homemade beignets and you will not regret eating here. Lastly, the service is spot on. We had another wonderful meal and that's why we keep going back.
The food was superb--rich, flavorful, thoughtfully prepared and beautifully presented. The place itself is lush, comfortable and inviting. For a business meal, it works well because we can actually hear one another (unlike other more "hip" establishments). This is a Louisiana cuisine place, and there is nothing "nouvelle" about it. The wine list is very good if a bit over priced.
Service was impeccable. Our appetisers of Turtle soup and oysters were very tasty. However I was disappointed by my entree of almond encrusted trout. It was basically fried fish and I had still to find trace of an almond. I was also very dissatisfied to have to pay $20 for a small bowl of buttered angel hair for my daughter. The Bananas Foster redeemed the meal somewhat as did our charming waiter. However, to add insult to injury the valet was not satisfied with the $3 I gave him. I only had $20 bills, which I had to hand over when told the charge was $5. He then returned $15 in change and kept the original $3. Pretty much sums up our evening!
Dinner was amazing. Our server described all the entrees we had questions about perfectly. His recommendations were awesome. The grilled oysters were fantastic. Just make sure you have extra bread so you can dip it into the extra bedding. Filet cooked to perfection. And the Bananas Foster prepared table side is to die for.
The food, the flavor, the presentation, the superior service from all staff members are simply upstanding--all excellent reasons why this place has been a Houston gem for 50 years! Our waiter helped make some incredible selections and provided more details for special events and menu details.
The tableside banana fosters was our absolute favorite!
