Breakwater Restaurant & Bar in Greenville, South Carolina takes a contemporary approach to Southern cuisine. We are so sorry to see Breakwater Greenville go. It filled a casual fine dining niche on the West End that fit below Halls and American Grocery. We'll be sure to visit in Beaufort.
WE had 4 dishes and 2 were great and 2 we're mediocre. Our server referred to one of the dishes as being "rolled like a cigar" which we both found quite unappetizing. We ordered the dish, despite this description and it was disappointing. Recommend the scallops and the tuna tartare. Martini was great!
Great date night restaurant, great atmosphere and intimate.
Food varied from Excellent (grouper special) to just OK (Mahi). Great service, nice atmosphere, valet parking, but expect better than just OK for the price. Will go again, but won't order Mahi next time.
The hostess was polite and the server did a good job explaining the specials and delivering the drinks. We chose the special steak and shrimp meal, and though good, were a bit overpriced. For some reason we were not originally credited with our visit, but most assuredly was there. We'll be back in the future.
The food and service were reasonably good. Yet, no one at the table was particularly impressed with their entrées. The ambience was nice though not special. Overall, I simply wasn't impressed. For the prices, I would expect more. Not a bad meal, but there are better meals/experiences to be had for less.

I have eaten here a few times for special occasions. Never disappoints. The service, ambiance and food are fabulous.
Service was very good. According to the food, my soup was too salty while the entree was excellent.
I would recommend that a door or screen put up where "employees only" enter the kitchen. It's messy and dirty. I wish I asked to move, it ruins my dinning experience at Breakwater.
Our waiter was excellent and knowledgeable about the food. He patiently tolerated one rather obnoxious member of our party without losing his cool. This was the best meal and best service I've experienced in Greenville! Kudos to Breakwater!!

Celebrating 2 birthdays and a "girls night out" all together. Food is always outstanding, both in variety available and presentation. Our waiter was a hoot! Entertaining and charming. Really made the evening fun and accommodated our requests! We LUV Breakwater!
I don't have anything really bad to say about our experience but I also don't have anything awesome to say about it either. The service was excellent. Yes, we ordered the small plate serving size, but I thought they were awfully small for the price. Fortunately, we both ordered salads or it would not have been enough food. My wife ordered the lamb chops medium well and they were woefully undercooked. Had we not been trying to go a show, she would have sent them back. I saw two people at another table send their food back. I ordered the Matambre which is a rolled flank steak stuffed with spinach, egg, onions, and chimichurri sauce. It was very tasty but only five bites - my own fault. I should have ordered the large portion.
We were in the main room, which, with all of the hard surfaces, was a little loud for us. It probably would have been ok had we been with a group.
Good selection of beer and wine, though. I'll give it a second chance before pronouncing final judgement.
You must try the lamb chops. Biscuit appetizers were a little more garlicky than last time. Peach butter is always enjoyable.
Our server came out and told us the chef asked for him to let us know our food would be a little longer because he overcooked the fish and put a new filet on! That is most appreciated!!!
Hit Breakwater Greenville again this week, equally as good as the last visit. Pork Belly, Quail, and Scallops in the small plate category - Pork Shoulder and Swordfish special in the large plate category. All fantastic. Several cocktails, nailed them all this time around. Great visit!!!

Excellent food, very good for an "expensive" night out without breaking the bank. Solid wine list and service. Try the Salmon and stay for the Swedish Chocolate Cake.
This was truly a lucky find via OpenTable! We were looking for a last minute reservation and there was availability at the time we wanted. The restaurant is located in a cool part of downtown Greenville and fits in well with the area. Well decorated, upscale but still casual. Everyone from the hostess to our outstanding server were friendly and just attentive enough. I asked for a specialty martini and received a delicious drink that rivaled the best that I have ever had. The food was also amazing. There are small plates that can also be appetizers. I had the spring salad and small plate quail stir fry. Both were soooo good. My friend had a bowl of chili, which we were surprised to find on the menu, that was outstanding and a small plate steak dish. The entire evening was great! Definitely try Breakwater if you are in Greenville!
Great food. Love the fried shrimp app! Had the small plate scallops and risotto. It is soooooo good! Others had the special which was rare tuna. And it was delish!!!

Everything was great, except they didn't cook my steak properly. It still tasted good, just wasn't the right doneness. Service was excellent and all other food was delicious!
Great Happy Hour bar service. My Orange twist 'tini was awesome...and potent! The blackened Mahi was cooked to perfection (tender & not dry). My Southern Boy husband enjoyed the fried chicken.. and he wouldn't share with me. A fun date night for us. For desert, Crème Brule won the coin toss over the chocolate cake. Hope to go back soon.

I took my little brother to dinner for his birthday. The food was incredible, the service was perfect and the environment was pleasant. I really enjoyed that the bar area was contained and away from the dinner guests so we could enjoy our time together without getting caught in the middle of the bar chatter. We will be back and recommend to others.
The food was great,I loved the atmosphere and it was quite .our service could have been , he only checked on us once,I think.he did check on some ingredients for my friend but the meal still had to much dairy and it was obvious he didn't know how much and didn't explore it further .
Decided for one night to exit the rut of Chophouse, Da Vinici's, Larkins - to Head downtown and give Breakwater another shot. Apparently they're in the process of some cocktail changes, of the four we had, two were keepers, two were not. I love the idea of the pre-prohibition feel to the drinks. Nail down the components, add a spherical ice, you're on the right track. Food was really good, Tuna Tartar - Quail Fried Rice - Pork Belly - Scallops, the idea of every dish being offered in the form of a tapas, or a large plate is great, don't lose that! Our server Derreck was fantastic, probably the main reason we would go back sooner, rather than later.

After reading the reviews raving about the small plates here, we decided to give Breakwater a try. Boy, I'm glad we did!
Small plates are just smaller portions of the main entrees, which I loved. Sharing a appetizer and dessert, my husband and I walked out feeling very satisfied, rather than miserable from eating too much! And, I didn't have to take half of my meal home.
The prices for the wine by the glass were a bit pricey. Still we enjoyed both the red and the white.
Last but not least, the service was EXCELLENT!
Try Breakwater....you won't be disappointed!

Our server, I believe his name was John, was fantastic. Polite, Knowledgeable, Funny. The food was good and fresh, but nothing stood out as special or delicious. I had a drink, "I'll Have What She's Having" It was outstanding
We shared 3 small plates--hot chicken, lamb and beef. We loved each of them. We had great wine and great service, too.
