Breakwater Restaurant & Bar - Beaufort
Chef Lang and Chef Shaw's version of 'New Southern Cuisine' contains the past, present, and future all at once. Younger, lighter, and fresher than traditional Southern 'Old School' deep-fried fare while acknowledging culinary influences from the world beyond. Exceptional tapas menu, outstanding fresh local seafood and produce.
The bar at Breakwater exudes a lively energy with locals and travelers alike. Exceptional wine list with 75 wines by the glass.
Generally good, but entree portion (fish special) was exceedingly small—-especially for the price. Service very good
We ate here during restaurant week and while the food was delicious the portions were disappointing. I selected grouper from the restaurant week menu and paid the $5 up charge to be served a piece of grouper approximately 2”x 2”. No where on the menu did it indicate it was a small plate. My husband ordered seafood etouffee and it was a cup not a bowl. I feel it was very overpriced for the portion size!
Went to Breakwater many times, and the food and service are normally better. This was during restaurant week. Service was slow, and food was just okay. Hoping our disappointment is due to popularity of restaurant week
We went for restaurant week and 3 course meal. The calamari was okay and the crab soup was good but after that it was all downhill. Wife had grouper which smelled fishy and was not hot. I had etoufee which was not as advertised it was the she crab soup with a biscuit, so disappointing. When I informed the waitress she asked if I wanted another entree which I did but, after the slow service I asked for the grouper. They had the nerve to charge the upcharge to replace the etoufee and opening the box at home it smelled fishy too. We were at the first seating so no excuses for being busy. Will never go back and will say stay away!
We (party of 4) were traveling via Beaufort and were delighted with our dining experience at Breakwater. The filet is the best I’ve ever enjoyed and is highly recommended.
Great service, good ambiance. We went for restaurant week. The choices were delicious, especially the duck.
Went to Breakwater and enjoyed dinner during Resturant week. Great service and even better food!!
very good food, great presentation , drinks are good , nice wine selection, always good customer service and atmosphere, one of my favorite restaurants in town.
Great dinner off the restaurant week menu. Sat by window, great for people watching but a little chilly. Always a good time there. Proud to call it a hometown treasure.
I want to start with my husband and I loved this restaurant, but last time and last night were horrible! Unfortunately, we won’t be back. The fixed menu for restaurant week was basically a tapas menu. The soup was cold, plain and simple. Had to send it back. Our dinners were the duck and tiki marsalas (sorry for misspelling). Husband got 2 tiny and I mean tiny pieces of chicken and again food cold! My duck again cold! I got 3 minuscule pieces which had so mu fat it was basically one bite. Vegetables were very strong with vinegar flavor. Just sent it away. Dessert was salted caramel something that was good. Since the chocolate chip cookie didn’t “rise “ I could choose from the menu a dessert and the brownie and ice cream was wonderful & basically my dinner.
I would find another restaurant. The waitress knew we were not happy and that was the end of it!
Girlfriend lunch - we both had the Cobb salad, one with shrimp and the other with salmon.
Delectable. Andrew was a great server.
I visit Breakwater frequently (2 or 3 times a month) and usually eat at the bar. The bartender know the clientele by name and there is usually interesting conversation with others. On this visit I was meeting friends who thoroughly enjoy good food and good wine. All four of us were well pleased. I ordered the bone-in pork chop shared a bite with the others. Ordered it medium rare and it came out perfectly. Would highly recommend to anyone.
Very good food and nice place. Highly recommend the Nashville chicken and collard greens!
Breakwater inn my estimation is the best restaurant in Beaufort. Usually go for dinner but decided on lunch this time. The crab cake salad was delicious. The crab cakes were nice size and very tasty. But the salad it came with was the winner in my book. As in many of their dishes there is a great combination of flavors and this salad was no exception. My wife now firmly believes Breakwater has the best shrimp and grits in town. Our friend had the waygu burger which was very good.
You cant go wrong here. Everyone id very nice. Service is friendly and casual.
Except service and food. Loved the shrimp and scallop dishes.
Such a wonderful restaurant! The food is excellent, the service impeccable, and the location is choice! We will definitely return!
A really great little place that I have passed by many times before, but never noticed it. I live about an hour away in Bluffton & go to Beaufort several times a year. I found it on the Open Table App.
Simply the best of the best in Beaufort ,SC. Food quality is consistent and will not disappoint whith your next visit!
Nice decor, very polite and efficient staff, our filet's were melt in your mouth.....the only disappointment was the bartender couldn't make a birthday cake or sugar cookie martini 😕
Great intimate bar seating, great service, delicious food & cocktails.
Amazing!!! We will definitely be back. This was our first time eating there. The food was delicious. The atmosphere was very cozy. I very much enjoyed every minute of our experience.
Great food, terrific service, and fair prices vs quality
My friend and I met here as a midway point between Charleston and Hilton Head. Beautifully appointed place with hospitality and good service. They allowed us to visit through the lunch time and we left about 4. We will definitely return to this lovely spot in a charming town. Only recommendation is that they please add paper towels in the restroom in addition to blower dryer.
Other than the wonderful food we always describe breakwater as white table cloth.....where are they? Changes the entire atmosphere. Don’t like that....really don’t like that just looks like a bar.....bring them back please...
Unfortunately dinner was a disappointment. We eat at Breakwater often. We had guests with us it was their first experience. Appetizers were good. Calamari the breading would not stay on so it was very difficult to eat. The shrimp appetizer was wonderful. Dinner there were two orders of the scallops with risotto. Both orders the scallops were best lukewarm in the risotto was mushy and brownish toned. The other dish with the shrimp fried rice. The shrimp fried rice came it was hot in the guest truly enjoyed it. Unfortunately our waitress was not around otherwise I would’ve sent back the scallop dishes. Dessert was wonderful.
We will go back sometime, but no time soon.
Excellent food, excellent service. Our party of 6 was never rushed. Highly recommend the fried chicken.
This is our favorite restaurant in Beaufort! The food is always outstanding, the atmosphere is wonderful, and the staff are friendly. We go here knowing that everything is going to be outstanding.
Always a pleasure!
We had a lovely family lunch over the Thanksgiving holiday and received the best service. Thank you
This was my 3rd visit to Breakwater Restaurant. Each experience has been very good. On this trip I ordered a Filet and requested it rare. It was brought out at more than rare. I mentioned it to the waitress and I also said that I would not return it. In the end, the waitress compensated me with one glass of wine. That made my evening. I only have high regards for this establishment and the staff.
We were given a SMALL 2 top in a room with no tablecloths or candles on the tables. It was very uncomfortable. Other parties of 2 were at 4 tops. Other dining areas were much nicer with cloths and candles. There were nice booths with only 2 diners. The place was not even half full and never filled up during our time there. Was our poor seating a result of booking with Open Table? By the way, we spent $160 here and the food was mediocre.
Had an excellent first visit here. Food was amazing and staff were attentive and responsive!
We always enjoy Breakwater. It never fails us. Great food. Friendly, courteous service and a fun atmosphere.
Portions were on the small side, given the prices, but the food was good. The spicy calamari was excellent as was the fried chicken wrap with avocado, blue cheese and buttermilk dressing.
Kelsey did an amazing job taking care of us! Food was excellent as usual!
In all our visits to Breakwater, we'd never once been disappointed. Unfortunately, our winning streak ended this past Saturday night. We'd planned to impress our out-of-town guests with an exceptional meal while they were visiting Beaufort, but that was not the case. Three of the dishes, including a special, that we'd intended to order were not available at 7:45pm, and the meals we settled for were underwhelming. The blackened Mahi, a personal favorite, tasted 'fishy' and I knew better than to eat it. The highlight of the entire meal was the butter bean hummus. We live locally and will return in the future, but we're sincerely hoping this is a one-off experience and that our next visit will be much less disappointing.
A really special dining experience in a classy little setting.
Every aspect of our meal was perfectly done.
Great fresh, local ingredients.
Our server, Lisa made our meal especially pleasant.
Our choice of many restaurants to take our visiting friends from Seattle to
The hostess was all southern charm - made us feel warm and welcome . Our food and service was good too
We ate here twice while in Beaufort. Awesome wine and the food is fabulous! Service great and the place has a great vibe! Highly recommend!
