Bread and Ink Café
It had been awhile since I had come to Bread and Ink for breakfast. The last time I had come portions were small and food was mediocre. This time, breakfast was outstanding! Highly recommend the fried chicken and waffles! Also tried my fiancé’s cinnamon roll and about died! It was so amazingly good, the best I have had in a very long time! Coffee was awesome and the service top-notch.
Great little breakfast spot on the east side! I'm not sure how they did it, but the smoked vegetables in the Verde Omelette add an outstanding flavor profile. My friend ordered their Frisian French Toast, and he devoured it. He said the cardamom maple syrup was a nice addition to the cinnamon and banana flavor. I would highly recommend to anyone looking for a new breakfast place to try!
We ended up with 18 people and the wait staff was very accommodating and sat us together. And everyone’s food came out together and hot.
The special fish dish was very disappointing. It looked and taste like it had been under a heat lamp. The pasta was ok, but over all not at all like I remembered it.
Still one of Portland's best restaurants. Best-quality ingredients, inventive dishes, and outstanding service.
My wife and I love this place! Awesome food, good service, great location, and fun atmosphere. Would definitely recommend giving it a try if you're in the neighborhood!
Nice comfortable spot in the heart of Hawthorne. Good breakfast selection, all my favorites. Friendly service, relaxed and attentive. Would recommend the waffles.
Simply amazing gem of a spot. Prices were very reasonable and the service was fantastic. Chicken and Waffles were on point, scramble dish was great. Mimosas were mind blowing as well!
Great place to have dinner. Known mostly as a breakfast/brunch restaurant, but the food is amazing for dinner too. Not crowded. Great service.
Always good food, wait staff is friendly and attentive. A favorite spot for breakfast. So excited to be able to make a reservation.
Fantastic service and delicious food! Made a reservation and got seated right on time.
Bread and Ink has a lot of yummy options, and they easily handle my dairy and egg allergy. Also, their mimosas are amazing, especially the blueberry basil.
The food was amazing !
We had such a great Mother's Day brunch! My eggs Benedict had crab, cut asparagus, pinon nuts... and was just delightful! My son's waffle was stacked high with mixed berries - which he devoured. And the chicken and waffles were fantastic and and remarkably presented. Excellent service!!
The food was excellent, lived up to its billing as fresh and local and innovative. But we were practically the only patrons in there, which I found a bit unnerving. (Wait person said weeknights are a total guess as to crowds; guess we hit it wrong.) Service was fine. Atmosphere? Old to the point of tacky. Probably works better as a morning diner experience, but for dinner it just looked tired. Not polished.
Bread and Ink is an iconic restaurant that has lived on SE Hawthorne Street for many years. It is also the home of the innovative Waffle Window. Throughout its history, excellent food and excellent customer service have been consistent features there. The other night was no exception. Two of us ordered the grilled shrimp sandwich with crisped cheese and mango salsa; I requested a gluten free version and received corn tortillas to house the flavorful meal. The third person ordered the bean burger. Two diners chose salad as their included side dish; I chose fries and ordered an additional beet salad. The side dishes were all fresh and tasty. The beet salad was beautiful to look at with gold and pink and maroon beets nestled on arugula with bits of blue cheese and hazel nuts. It was a very generous portion and I gladly ate part of it again the next day. Since it was my birthday, I splurged on dessert. Honoring my chocoholic tendencies, I picked a mouth satisfying chocolate torte that was rich without being overly sweet. Guilt forced me to share with my son and daughter-in-law who were treating me; luckily the portion was sizable enough that we all had a fair share. Glasses of wine enhanced our thoroughly delicious and enjoyable meal. Can't wait to go back!
Dinner after our daughter decided on her college
As always, food was excellent! You can never go wrong with breakfast at Bread & Ink. Yum!
Had not dined at Bread and Ink for decades....if that's possible. Really enjoyed the meal and it was a quiet, relaxing time. Thank you.
The food is delicious and the staff are very friendly. I love eating at bread and ink!
Bread and Ink has never failed to satisfy. The food is lovely, the service is solid, it’s not too crowded or noisy. The Portuguese flan is fabulous.
Great meal as always. Busy place for brunch but love all the food and drink options. Great service and friendly staff. Food was hot and fresh. Clean restaurant
Made a reservation for 6pm. Had a hard time deciphering where the entrance was cause they share space with a waffle joint. Was greeted by an unfriendly person who tried to show us to a small table for two near a drafty door. There was literally one other table in the place so I asked for a nice 4-top in the window so we could people watch (were from out of area). She copped major attitude and was noisily removing the 2 extra place settings. We were slow to be greeted by our server who was very nice but also pretty slow. Food was delicious although my husband said his fried chicken was under seasoned. We wanted to love it because it was recommended by our local foodie group but we won’t be back, mainly due to the hostess and her incredibly inhospitable behavior.
Four of us went to Bread and Ink for a birthday lunch. The food was well prepared, and everyone enjoyed it. Our server has worked at the restaurant for over 30 years. He was very personable and efficient. And he brought a special birthday dessert for our table to share—gratis!
Super great place for breakfast. Loved their coffee and service.
First time there after reading rave reviews. We were very impressed and will definitely be back.
Great food and service! The chicken and waffles were delicious!
Went for brunch with a friend. They worked with her to make some vegan options and she had a great meal. It was busy but the service was good. My meal was fine.
Great food, enjoyed it!!
30+ years of memories; still best for food and service.
We really appreciated as a group pf 4 becoming able to sit at the corner table at the front window at the back of the restaurant as it offered us enough privacy and quiet to have a conversation. Thank you.
We've been coming to Bread & Ink for many years. It's a family tradition to have their latkes in December. Unfortunately, though they serve breakfast all day on the weekends, because we dined in the afternoon, we could not order the latkes they had served just that morning. This was a disappointment, and therefore I could not give a 5-star rating. A website update or two might help inform future diners.
Family was visiting from out of state and this was the perfect place to show what great food, service, and friendliness Portland has to offer!!!!
Live here in Portland and haven't been back to Bread & Ink for almost 15 years. Took some friends out to dinner and decided to go to Bread & Ink and was delighted...service was great, food was really good and enjoyed our experience (and will return)
Great meal and great service. Food is always awesome with fun specials. Loved all the baked goods options.
My dinner was both undercooked and lukewarm. When I sent it back, it returned hotter but still underdone. The roasted autumn vegetables included carrots and Brussels sprouts that were also undercooked. One of our party had salmon that, conversely, was over-cooked.
The waiter was pleasant and friendly and also not well-informed about the menu. He seemed unsure what to do when we commented about the food. At no point did he apologize for the meal being poorly cooked. I wasn’t expecting him to take personal responsibility for our experience but an apology on behalf of Bread and Ink would have been nice.
We have been coming to this restaurant since it opened some thirty years ago. It’s a running joke in our family about the inconsistency of the service. But up until now, the food was quite well-prepared. Our experience this time was a disappointment.
The wait staff must have been practicing for Halloween, no energy, no smiles or personality. Maybe the young man was having a bad day. We both ordered the burger and it was dry and the bun was hard. Would not go back
Great service and food came out super fast. Yummy meal with so many options. Tons of bakery items made on site.
