Restaurateurs Vittorio Assaf and Fabio Granato brought their love for French culture and cuisine to New York City by giving the Big Apple an authentic slice of France when they opened Brasserie Cognac de Monsieur Ballon in April 2008. Located in the theater district and frequented by celebrities, businessmen, locals and tourists, the setting is both exciting and charming. The Brasserie style menu offers French classics . Guests can choose to dine in the outdoor sidewalk café, casual original French bakery, classic main dining room, lively bar/lounge or the private Cognac Room as they enjoy meals complimented by 102 varieties of cognac and a gorgeous wine list including first-growth Bordeaux sold by the glass.

Their mussels are amazing! I’ve had them once before and they were so good I’ve come back years later and their still just as good! The calamari is also fantastic. Large portions and easy to get to in the theatre district.

Looks much more charming from the outside than it really is. The escargots were inedible (my husband only ate 2) - not sure how you can really screw up cooking this dish besides overcooking them.... I had the pork chop which was a little tough due to the very crisp/charcoaled outside. The frites (with my husband's steak frites) were very good. Also took a while to get seated even though the restaurant was quite empty because the hostess was having to help clear tables. Overall - not impressed. And with the choice of restaurants in that area of Manhattan - we will never go back there.

We were recommended this place by our hotel's concierge and were not disappointed. Although it was a Sat. night at about 7:30, we were delighted to be able to hear each other and our friends throughout our meal. We sat in the front room which seemed quieter than the back room.

The foi gras special was a delicious piece of actual liver, not the terrine usually advertised at other French spots. My friend's hanger steak was perfectly cooked and tender. My scallop dish was generous and very tasty. The caesar salad was ok. I don't think it was dressed to begin with so we had to ask for dressing and additional anchovies, which they were very generous with on the house. Our floating island dessert was yummy.

Delicious French bistro with exceptional service. Mussels and frites were delicious and the broth perfectly balanced. French onion soup stock was rich yet light. Drinks were classic and well done. Definitely a place to return. Lots of good looking items on the menu and at other tables.

We are from Canada and have eaten at this rest on at least two other occasions, each of those years apart, and the quality has always been the same ... better than excellent! Love the menu filled with French classic dishes (appetizers, main courses and desserts) and the wine selection is great. My wife and I started with some champagne and a small basket (you can get a large) of their inimitable and signature "Cheese Puffs Gougeres" which are bite-sized puff pastries that are gruyere cheese flavoured ... there isn't a clump of cheese in the middle, the cheese is somehow part of the puff pastry. They arrive hot, melt-in-your-mouth and are sinfully delicious. My wife then had the Lobster Bisque ... rich, creamy, generous small chunks of lobster meat and sautéed mushrooms ... pretty amazing stuff. I had the French Onion soup and it was fantastic ... this is the real McCoy ... loaded with onions, dark and flavourful broth, crisp baguette toast with lots of melted gruyere cheese on top ... hard to beat. For the main course, my wife had a perfectly braised salmon, moist and juicy served on truffle laden mashed potatoes and other vegetables. I had the pan seared sea scallops with celery root purée, diced shiitake mushrooms in a Chardonnay sauce … the scallops were done to perfection and the rest of the plate just married so beautifully with the scallops without overpowering their delicate flavour. Spectacular dishes, both of them, and we washed them down with a beautiful Sancerre wine which you can get by the glass … it was pure bliss. We looked at the dessert menu but did not partake and just had coffee instead … black and robust … terrific. We saw many tempting dishes on that dessert menu but we had scoffed down some large gelato brioches and cannolis earlier that afternoon in Brooklyn at a wonderful Italian pasticceria and felt that discretion was called for in this instance. Make a mental note of this place if you are in New York … you won't regret it.

Better than usual Brasserie cuisine, but a bit pricey. Very good service. One can actually hold dinner conversation. Very convenient location for getting to Carnegie Hall performances.

We were dining pre-theater and chose because of proximity to the theater. But I want to go back because the food was excellent and the bistro ambiance was wonderful.
The service was attentive and efficient. Great experience.

Poor service, my kids were ignored and didn't get drinks until 30 minutes later. Expensive and poor quality food and drinks. Their bread wasn't fresh at all.. stay AWAY from the fondue, it was the worse. My kids love pasta and didn't even try to finish their meal. Another issue that we had was the menu prices online are cheaper than the restaurant.

We've been to Cognac many times in the past and picked it for a recent Sunday brunch. The food was as good as remembered (not over-the-top, but good), but the service was really frustrating. Although it happened to be Easter Sunday, the dining room appeared to be only half to two-thirds full - not swamped by any means. But unless there was someone else whom we did not see, there was only one waiter to cover the entire place (assisted by runners and bus persons), and he seemed to go out of his way to avoid eye contact with us whenever he passed by our table, which was strategically located between the two dining areas. We thought we had allowed time for a leisurely brunch (almost two hours), and ended up having to rush through dessert once it finally arrived. We'll try another place next time.

Cognac never fails us. It is our "go-to" restaurant whether for dinner or a late night snack. The atmosphere is RESTORATIVE, as is the food. And the service is attentive, friendly , fun and professional - all at the same time! Special favorites: goat cheese and tomato tart, calamari, onion soup, crab cake, lobster bisque, cheese fondue, beet salad, scallops (always spectacular), filet mignon burger to name a few!

Have been many times when we stay in the city and always enjoy the quality of food--can be casual and snack-y or excellent dinners. We like to sit in the back which is quieter vs the tourists like to sit in front where they can people watch out the windows. Cozy atmosphere. nice staff

Brasserie Cognac is my go to restaurant when attending an event at City Center. The do traditional French bistro cuisine to a high standard. The menu includes classics like escargot, French onion soup, Croque Monsieur, as well as entrees of chicken, fish and steak. Something for almost everyone. The wait staff is professional and they are willing to split checks and do what it takes to help you make your curtain. The room is pretty, full of copper and mirrors. They can handle groups of 6-8 easily.

We subscribe to shows at City Center and this was our first time at Brasserie Cognac and it most certainly won't be our last... there is ample variety to keep us returning each time we go to the theater... the a la carte menu offers many choices to comprise an excellent pre-theater meal... we were regulars at Circo for many years and have been seeking a new regular restaurant since it closed... we believe our search is over.

The appetizer meal & dessert were best I’ve had in long time. Bravo. And I dine at a lot of 1st tier places. Aside from that, there were unwiped food stains on the table which made me look carefully at the utensils. I had to return the first pair of Martinis because they were not prepared as asked for (no vermouth). Wait person was pleasant and charming but took long time to initially get her attention. At 2:30PM, not a busy time.
Loved the Congac Flambé Filet Mignon.

Personnel could not be nicer. We arrived early for our 11:30 reservation-no problem! The weather was rainy and cool, our entry time for the Downton Abbey exhibit was at 1:30. So perfectly French-we enjoyed cappuccinos
And a leisurely lunch-nobody rushed us. We felt like we were in Paris, not touristy at all. Will definitely return,
And highly recommend.

We were staying nearby and decided to try this restaurant, We love martinis, and we love chicken paillard. We sat at the bar and the bartender was great made great full drinks 🍸 and we decided to order dinner at the bar. The paillard comes with an arugula light dressing on top. The chicken was paper thin, spiced just right. We went back for an exact second meal . Both times the chicken was excellent, both bartenders made excellent drinks . A great mid fifties neighborhood gem.

We were pleasantly surprised at the excellent cuisine - from the hour here’s to the martini- everything was perfect. A little pricey- glass of wine 15.00 so dinner for four was over 200.00- but the dining experience was well worth the price. We will definitely be returning!

I took a friend for dinner before an 8pm Carnegie Hall performance. I arrived at 6pm, my guest at 6:30. When she arrived the waiter had not even poured water for the table. At 6:50 a waiter finally took our drink and food order. The drinks and appetizers arrived at 7:10. At 7:35 our dinner had not been delivered to us. We had to leave. As we were putting on our coats the dinner arrived and they were less than pleased that we would not stay to eat it. We would never go back.
