A neighbor gem. My go-to place either by myself or with friends whenever I am staying in the neighborhood. Can't beat their onion soup and burgers. Souffle is lovely as is the beet/ citrus salad.
I like the ambience here with red banquets that place your eyes at street level to people watch. The service was good but the food is lacking. I had the beef bourgoignon, which just showed a lack on interest in the preparation. The sauce could have been from a can as it was on the bland side. The tuna tartare appetizer was okay.
The food here is mediocre and the waitperson focuses on trying to get you to add on drinks, appetizers, and desserts. I did not find this a pleasant dining experience.
Unfortunately we were very disappointed. The escargot was tasteless, the hanger steak ordered medium was swimming in sauce-which I had the waiter remove-and the steak was like eating venison. The price of the hanger steak was $6.00 more than on their website although everything else was priced the same as the website. My friend ordered the tart as an appetizer which she liked very much, but thought the mussels to be a bit ordinary. The wines were very good and priced well.
Sadly we would definitely not be returning to this beautiful restaurant.
Service was OK, a bit rushed until we asked for some time.
The food was not great. The omelette was hard as a rock., and basically overcooked. It's not scrambled eggs it's not a diner. The accompanying salad had no dressing and the french fries were cooked previously and held in the fry basket or under a heat lamp for quite a while. Dry and overcooked.
I expected more.
As always service was great and their staff are super nice. Started with the basket of cheese puffs which are so good. My friends had the avocado toast and the spinach salad which they said were very good. I had one of my favorites which is the scallops. They always cook them perfectly. So good. Such a great spot to have in the neighborhood. Always delightful. We will keep coming back.
Lovely lunch , everything far above average, excellent food, experienced and helpful staff....definitely will return
Good, solid neighborhood place. We are repeat customers. Consistently first class food & service.
Excellent, old-world service! What a gem!
Nice place for quiet lunch in this neighborhood. Not too casual, nor too fancy.
They have good options and something for everyone.
It was Very Noisy. The service was good. I had a Tuna - Spinach salad. It was supposed to be medium rare, but came out definitively rare. The Salad Dressing was delicious.
I would go back, but not when it was so crowded.
Delightful evening. Food and service outstanding. Can't wait to go back!
Two guests ordered the Wednesday special - coq au vin. Very disappointing and unflavorful.
We have come to Cognaac enough to know that it is one of our favorite restaurants on the UES.
Great ambiance, service and food. A comfortable and traditional New York French restaurant.
So, so cozy- delicious French food and attentive, smiling staff. Perfect day for French onion soup!
Exquisite neighborhood gem. Great onion soup, perfect simple salad, and a filet mignon burger that was amazing.
Once seated upstairs, away from the bustle and noise, this was extremely pleasant experience. The menu had varied choices for all tastes, with particular praise for the tuna tart. The staff was very attentive and we did not feel that the upstairs was "in Siberia." Will definitely return.
Christmas dinner with my son
Excellent manager Adrian most helpful; Staff very accommodating; given perfect table for comfort and location. Seems more of a family-run restaurant than part of a larger chain. High recommendation.
Excellent!! I am definitely going back & I highly recommend it to everyone
A great neighborhood spot for a quick meal or a full dinner. Warm ambience, excellent food.
A little gem on the upper east side. We ate there twice during our four day visit. French food with a twist.
Sat at the bar for drinks and appetizers, had the cheese puffs and escargot. Food was great and came out in good time, wine selection was great and they have Kronenberg on tap!
I would be reluctant to return, not because of the food or service, but because it was very difficult to carry on a conversations thanks to the noise. And I had requested a quiet table in advance.
A comfortable, very pleasant place to be, serving recognizable food the way Julia Childs might have cooked it!
I always feel as though I'm in Paris in the 60's and that ain't bad!
Order an aperitif, onion soup, and relax... what could be better?
Food is very good and price is reasonable. Staff is friendly and provide good service. Their mushroom risotto is usually amazing!
Very nice and cozy place !
This is the second time I've eaten here (the first was lunch, many years ago). My companion suggested it, as it is near Hunter College, and she had an event there she wanted to attend. I had not been too impressed the first time, but this time it was very pleasant. My companion first had the squash soup, which was one of the specials offered, and then the cheese fondue. I had the mussels. Each of us had a glass of wine, and we both had coffee afterward. I was pleasantly surprised by the price, which I thought was good value, and the service was really excellent --beginning with the fact that that the hostess had saved a banquette for us, as my companion had wanted, and continuing on through the coffee -- my companion wanted espresso and as they didn't bring a lemon peel with it, she requested one and it arrived rapidly. My mussels were very good -- maybe not the largest in creation, but plenty of them, and plenty of sauce to go with them, plus fine French fries. My companion said her squash soup was only average, and it took a few minutes for her fondue to heat up as much as she wanted, but it was sitting on a nice little gas fire, so it did warm up eventually and I think she enjoyed it
We enjoyed the food and service with friends on Sunday night. The tuna appetizer and halibut special were very good as was the onion soup and Niçoise salad.
Excellent food, wonderful service! For a change an unhurried meal with discreet yet totally attentive service and in a lovely setting where we could all hear ourselves talk! From the cheese platter to entrees, specials and dessert, outstanding all around!
I have often enjoyed lunch at Cognacs but this was my first dinner and everything was outstanding. Food surpassed all expectations.
Just meh. Not the best onion soup I’ve had and nothing about this place is great. The service is lackluster and the prices are high.
Great French restaurant with excellent quality food, and a cosy ambiance. It can be comforting and romantic. Lots of character and interest dishes.
A wonderful surprise and reminder of how nice Cognac can be. It was a dual Birthday celebration with a friend and business colleague; quiet and cozy.
Food was excellent. Service was good; we were not rushed nor neglected.
I highly recommend the soufflés: cheese and chocolate.
The food and atmosphere were ordinary and the service
was good. But, charging $2 MORE for a drink ordered
straight up is insulting for a neighborhood place.
Other places around the area are just as good
and drink charge is the same no matter how it
Was expecting a value oriented dinner from a restaurant in hand historically received good reviews. Disappointing value. High price for average quality food.
One of our favorites
I always find this restaurant very good. Tonight, however, it fell short.we waited outside for nearly 30 minutes with no food . After a few minutes they brought out main dish and never brought the salad. The burger came without cheese and when we sent it back the french fries were cold.
We were treated to desserts so it did make up for the lack of attention. Still, a lovely evening and I would recommend it again.
We ate outside; not conducive but a nice day. Had the chicken salad, which is tasty. Service was good.
