Braised Onion Ratings and Reviews
We stopped in Ocala for the day and after seeing a travel review decided to try the Braised Onion for dinner. We arrived about 10 minutes prior to our 5:30 p.m. reserved time and were immediately seated. Our server, Trevor, provided prompt, friendly service and made helpful suggestions regarding our meal. My wife ordered a bowl of Braised Onion Soup and the Poached Pear Salad. She said that the onion soup was absolutely the best she'd ever had and the salad was fresh and tasty. The Braised Onion Loaf (one of Trevor's recommendations) was also excellent. For my entree I ordered the special of the day which was a delicious concoction of shrimp, clams, mussels, and scallops. The portion was substantial and reasonably priced. The next time we are in Ocala, you will find us dining at the Braised Onion!!!!
We've been coming to this restaurant ever since it open, but new owners last year or so and quality and service has gone down. Noise level terrible, so loud my husband & I could not even talk. They were busy but they need to someone have it not echoing so we can carry on conversation. The shrimp Thai appetizer was delicious. They ran out of prime rib by 7pm which is what we went for. So we ordered country fried tenderloin and it was a sirloin and tuff at that, we have eaten this before but could not even eat it and my seafood dish was very mushy. We want go back until new owners or chef. The meal last night was very expensive for what we had. Prices have gone up. We would rather go back to mesa da nolte, Marks or Craft Cusinine.
It is sad when the first time you go to a restaurant like the Braised Onion and have exceptional service (it was a Thursday night) and wonderful food cooked and served with attention to detail and then return on another night a few weeks later (Wednesday) with friends only to have a server who could not figure out what was on the menu, failed to put the order in correctly, and were served meals that demonstrated the chef must have left town that night. And though we mentioned we were going to the play at the Ocala theater they never mentioned the discount that we found out about only after getting to the play. So sad that this place is so inconsistent - do we dare try again?
Trevor, our server, was truly exceptional. He knew the menu and really seemed to take pride in the restaurant. The food was fantastic and was delivered with flair and perfect timing. Our party was a 9 top and each of us left delighted even the vegan of our group.
This was our first time eating at the Braised Onion and it was a wonderful experience. I wanted to take my wife to a nice restaurant for her birthday so thought we would try the Braised Onion. Everything was perfect, the food was delicious, service was spot on thanks to Trevor. We will definitely be back and highly recommend it to other looking for a great evening out.
Impeccable service with great recommendations. The ambiance is fun yet soothing. Flawless food. No complaints at all. Will return to try the rest of the menu. We had three appetizers, four dinners and two handmade desserts. All were served perfectly and had flavor from fresh ingredients.
Sadly I was very disappointed. I ordered the ribs and Mac n cheese. The ribs were so tough and chewy I could not eat them. I sent the ribs back and didn't order more. The man n cheese was good but did not agree with my stomach. My husband ordered cod and it was wonderful.
The food was excellent! I had eggplant parmigiana first time, and it was very good. I had meatloaf this time. It and the sides were excellent. The coconut cream pie was delicious! The server was friendly and not intrusive. The only negative I might mention is very minor--the DJ in the bar had a spinning ball that cast spots of light around the room. We were on the other side of the glass wall, but the light was in the eyes of our friends who were facing it. They said it wasn't blinding, only a little annoying. Overall, it's a great place, and we will be back, although it's about a 40-minute drive for us.
The Vanlentines Day reservations I set were pushed back 45 minutes, because people just weren't leaving. It was an indication of how great this place is. The food was good but by the time we were served, it was passed their normal business hours, could tell the kitchen/cooks were to their limits, the steak my date ordered was off temp. I'm dying to get back because I know the restaurant under normal circumstances would even be better. The staff was frazzled but putting on a great show and I over tipped out of pity. Being in the industry, I know "better" restaurants that would have broken under the pressure.. that really impressed me.
As usual Braised was excellent. We've been many times over the last few years and enjoy it every time! This visit was for Valentines Day. I was amazed how quickly the appetizer and food came out. It was like a regular turn around time for them which was a surprise since it was a busy holiday. Every choice on the menu is a great choice. You gotta go!
Tried the Braised Onion for lunch on Valetines Day . Our rib appetizer was a little dry and tough . Our salads were good , our lunches were good . Our server was not overly friendly but she was efficient . We were hoping for something a little special menu wise based on it being Valetines Day. We would give this restaurant another try .
I love the food here, I eat the salmon w frangelica and my husband has the liver, onion and bacon. We are 66 and 73....we like fine dining but HATE the noise. We cannot hear I guess. Would not go on a Friday again. Sad that we cannot spontaneously go out on weekend but have to plan a weekday dinner for peace and quiet and conversation. Was over an hour wait for food even though we had a reservation, do not know what happened here. But the receptionist did apologize. They did not save our table for us I guess. We arrived at 7:04 pm. This is the type of food that you sit and savor....and enjoy...your wine is great...Had the dynamite Cab and loved it. I have had very good wines here before. A big plus.
The atmosphere is pleasant and fun with creative art and live jazz on the Friday we were there . However, the dining experience was a disappointment. My husband had a drink that was served in a small glass, non call for $8. Our server highly recommended the crock of onion soup, their specialty. Made sense as the entire motif is onion oriented. I had one spoonful of the broth and could not eat it as it was extremely salty, just inedible! My husband said the same thing after he tried a spoon of it. My 1/2 portion($7) of the braised pear salad came and I asked to have a cup of lobster bisque as I could not eat the onion soup. The salad was mediocre, much ado about not much as it was greens a poached spiced pear with some goat cheese , almonds and a sweet spiced dressing all way too sweet for my taste.
The cup of bisque was poor, no discernible lobster flavor, more of a fishy essence. I did not eat that either. My husband had the Friday special, prime rib with baked potato. He said it was OK but for $25 a house salad should have been included.
The server adjusted the $8 off for the french onion, added $5 for the cup of bisque said nothing and we said nothing. End of story, we will not go back and would like to know where we can go in the Ocala area for casual yet quality food for a pleasant night out. We are new to the area and have been disappointing each time we go out for dinner. Help- I don't want to cook at home every night!
Comfort food" is a restaurant buzzword that has become an excuse to fry things and add a pickled accent. I would use "down home cooking" or a "trip to my grandmother's house" to describe Braised Onion. Simply put, it was just plain GOOd food. I had liver & onions and my husband had fried chicken. Our waiter cautioned us to save soon for dessert which was a difficult task but we managed. It was worth it. Driving through Ocala like we were? Reserve now and have a comforting meal. Our server was knowledgeable and even in a busy atmosphere made the dining experience seem personal. Thanks, "T."
Made a reservation and was seated across from the bar. I had to sit on a crack that separated the cushions, very uncomfortable. Seated a lady and child next to us and had to listen to her threaten the child with behaving during our whole meal. So many empty seats they could have seated them . ( I love children but when I am paying for a nice meal I don't think it's fair to listen to a child crying over having to eat his green beans for 45 minutes. Our potatoes were cold and our vegetables were cold. I will say the meat was delicious for all three meals and the waiter was exceptionally good.
Apps: Plain lettuce wedge with too powerful garlic dressing. Mushroom soup average but cold. Poached pear salad was good. Cocktails very weak, as was the iced tea (looked like very weak sun tea). Main course: Prime rib was medium - the only way they cook it and cool/cold. Tasteless. Bake potato not fully cooked. Broccoli cold and under done. Stroganoff very tasty but cold. Chicken marsala was OK. Another baked potato was not fully cooked and came naked - it was to be a loaded potato. Desert was ordered and took 30 minutes to arrive. In general the kitchen was very slow. Too pricey for what we received. I could have done better taking my out-of-town guests to Denny's. The chief must be a legend in his own mind as his kitchen of off in dream land. We will NOT go back. Don't waste your time and money. The only reason I didn't send all meals back was to not embarrass our guests.
We were seated immediately upon arrival. The table was near the door so it did get chilly at times. The waiter was quick to take our drink order and followed up with our dinner order.
There were four diners and between us we tried three different menu items. Everyone enjoyed their dinner so much that there wasn't much offering of "try this" going on.
We'll be going back soon.
Disappointed. Made reservations a month early - seated next to a party of 20. Wine was spilled on me from top to bottom. Accidents do happen. Fried green tomatoes and the onion soup was excellent. Dinner - being allergic to broccoli we ask for green beans. Served the broccoli anyway. Potatoes were cold. Prime rib and catfish were good. This was our six visit to the Braised Onion. This was our first bad experience. We will try it one more time.
