Braised Onion Ratings and Reviews
Went for a birthday celebration. Extremely disappointed. We had a 6:30 reservation. The hostess seated us. 30 minutes later had to ask the hostess to send us a server. Server came over to tell us that she had told hostess not to seat us cause she wasn’t ready. I told her a drink would make us happy to which we ordered and then waited another 20 minutes to get. Waitress tried to make it enjoyable but offered no round of drinks or anything! Not even a free dessert for birthday girl! I’ll never go back! Food was good but nothing so outstanding that it would overcome the bad experience. They kept saying they were busy?! Not every table full and most tables were either paying or getting entrees when we were sitting for the 50 minutes waiting...
We had a 6:15 reservation and when we entered the place was 85% empty. They seated us between two other tables and right in front of the door, on the coldest night. Every time the door opened, we were blasted with cold air. We didn't ask to be moved because the door only opened a few times.
The service was excellent and the food was good. On New Years eve they had a special menu. They did not allow substitutions for potato for rice as example. The prices were too high for the entrees as there was nothing that should have cost as much as they were asking. Even a high priced restaurant would have been less expensive. The value was not there. Usually prices are reasonable. WE WILL NOT GO BACK ON ANY HOLIDAY.
Traveling to Marco Island, we have been to this restaurant the last two years on New Years Eve. On that evening they have a special menu, everything was delicious. This year we were there on December 30th, so we ordered from the regular menu. My wife had the lemon chicken and I had the beef short ribs. We both loved our meals. Our server Mariah was very friendly and efficient. The owners, Nichole and Betty came by our table several times to see that we were happy with everything.
We look forward to eating here again. This place is GREAT.
We traveled to Ocala to see our son for Christmas and used TripAdvisor to find a restaurant. We wer not disappointed, everyone loved the food. We had everything from fried chicken, prime rib and lobster mac & cheese. Place was quiet so we could talk without shouting and the service was excellent. The waiter was very knowledgeable and was johnny on the spot without being intrusive. We had a wonderful Christmas family reunion at the Braised Onion in Ocala.
Restaurant was almost completely filled with large groups so was extremely loud. My husband and I were there to celebrate an anniversary so it was almost hard for the two of us to make conversation. Because of the large number of groups, we were told our dinner would be delayed. No offer to comp an appetizer or drink was made. An hour later, still no food, we spoke to the waitress about a comp for the inconvenience, she sent out the manager who comped us an additional drink, which at this point in time we really didn’t need, and told us their chef had left two weeks ago and everything was chaotic in the kitchen because of the groups. To me, this is a restaurant that welcomes groups, reservations must be made in advance for a group, it would have been WAAAAAY better to call in extra kitchen staff than let customers sit for an hour without getting their meal——a comped appetizer would be appropriate at this time. Also, we were charged $2.00 to have CC put in my drink and $3.00 to have Seagrams put in my husbands drink. Bottom line is that it will be a very long time before we return to the Braised Onion.
My wife & I have frequented this restaurant many times over the years, first when Chef Felix owned it and now under current ownership. Very little has changed and what has changed has been very positive. Over the years we have brought many friends and they all have enjoyed the dining experience. On this occasion, we traveled from The Villages with 3 “newbie” couples. Jerome was our server and from start to finish he took care of our every need & want in a professional & pleasant manner. The food, from the Lobster Mac & Cheese to the Beef Tournedos to the Short Ribs was excellent. All agreed that it was an excellent dining experience earning the Brsised Onion 8 repeat customers.
Our group of four adults arrived for a birthday celebratory lunch for our two guests. This was marked in our Open Table reservation, where indicated. We expected nothing special, but a birthday greeting would have been nice.
The food and drinks were very good all agreed and we enjoyed them thoroughly: Salmon entrees, lobster bisque, salad, and quiche and burger special of the day.
We found our server to be rather curt from the onset - no smile, no welcome - well, perhaps it was an off day for her. But, it certainly didn't add anything to the reason for the lunch. We found this unusual for Braised Onion.
We will try another day - when not hosting others.
Usually the Braised Onion is wonderful- but for Thanksgiving it was lackluster. Buffet - traditional items unfortunately were only lukewarm at best. Not much in the way of flavor or creativity.
Service is usually lovely - but on Thanksgiving- because it was a buffet - the staff did nothing more than serve drinks and clean used plates. I ordered coffee while having desert - it was awful - tasted like it was the last cup that had been sitting in the pot burning for quite some time.
Won’t do another holiday dinner there.
First time to this place and went for Thanksgiving Buffett food was good loved the mashed sweet potatoes with marshmallows we had a 1:00 PM reservation and we were seated right away for the price $39.95 a person I think a little bit more variety would have been nice only vegetables were green beans and carrots
My first try at the Braised Onion. We made reservations for dinner after the theater.
I Ordered the country tenderloin.
The green beans were properly cooked. I don't think much harm can be done to mashed potatoes, but the steak was very tough. Tougher than I have ever encountered a piece of tenderloin.
The first chair I sat in was worn out years ago. Fortunately we were seated at a four top and both of us could sit on the "bench".
I doubt I will give them another try.
For four of us, this was a first time experience at the Braised Onion. Overall, I would classify the experience as “fair”. There was a diversity of entrees ordered. Both men who ordered the prime-rib found it disappointing and lacking in flavor. We all ordered the braised onion soup or lobster bisque. Both were very good! I ordered the lobster Mac and cheese and found it quite good. It was an exceptionally large serving. Another got the tournedos and they were so tender and flavorful. The sauce was delicious. The chicken pot pie was also ordered and was enjoyed. The chicken Marsala was said to be “good”; but, not great.
We were unable to converse with everyone in our party of six. We were placed at a table for 10 and it made being heard very difficult. This restaurant is quite loud. We had hoped for a more intimate dining experience. Our waiter had multiple tables and he was trying hard to keep up with our needs. As a couple, I would return but I would not go back with a group.
Our waiter, Trevor, did an amazing job serving our table of six.
He was spot on with his descriptions of particular food items, recommendations and personal favorites. Each member of our party was thrilled with their choices and he kept us informed every step of the way. The only negative of the evening was that then noise level was higher than I remember from previous visits. We were at a corner round table and the placement of tables on either side were close!
But again Trevor did an amazing job again and our compliments to the chefs, Deliciously exquisite!
Firstly our Service was very substandard. Inattentive. No follow up during meal. Had to wave at server to get check.
Have eaten here many times before. Generally with pleasing results. Tonight not so much. Pork loin was pretty uninspired. Onion soup was way to salty.
And cannot understand why hostess wanted to pack all the diners together. Asked to be moved since the adjacent table was pretty loud. Her solution was one table over when the dining area looked pretty empty.
What a pleasant surprise! Having traveled all day on our way to Florida, we discovered just a delightful restaurant in Ocala. While the restaurant was several miles off the interstate, the drive was worth the time. Started with the onion loaf, which was delicious, followed by chicken Marsala which was accompanied accompanied with whipped potatoes and outstanding green beans. The flavors of all the items were fresh, generously portioned and visually appealing. We plan to stop at the Braised Onion on the return trip from Florida!
