Boxwood at The London Ratings and Reviews
The ambiance was exactly what we were looking for during our luncheon. We stayed quite a bit longer than initially anticipated because the environment, view, food, drinks and staff were all amazing! We could not have enjoyed ourselves more than we did. Thank you!
The Filet was AMAZING and a definite recommend! Even though most dishes sounded appetizing, my husband tried my Filet (medium rare) and commented on how he wish he would have gotten that; the Filet was only about $36 and the size of a fist -- great find! If you are a dessert lover, save room for the chocolate cake (with multiple layers) or the crepes (multiple layers of crepes that make up a slice of cake). All that to say, we had a great experience there. We were hoping to have gotten the Beef Wellington, but did not realize that was the Spring menu and they had changed a couple weeks prior. Oh well, one day.
We were excited to try this restaurant upon a suggestion from a friend. We were very disappointed in the service as well as the food. My, transplanted English, husband ordered a "Shepard's Pie" and a side of mushy peas. The Pie was the smallest Shepard's pie he had every seen. It was served in, what looked like a teacup saucer that was only about 1/4" deep. They didn't serve the mushy peas with the meal, when was finally able to get the servers attention, she had to fight with the chef and bring him the menu, to prove they were ON the menu. He begrudgingly served up about a tablespoon full and served them cold. My Black Bass meal was very good. Ambiance was nice and the restaurant was pleasant enough. The "English" food and the service were severely lacking.
We came here for my friends birthday dinner and it was wonderful. Our server Keith was so fun and accommodating. We even had one of our guests show up late and they were able to bring her food out with the rest of ours. Can't wait to try this place again.
The restaurant was quiet on this evening -- we were one of only three tables. The service was good. We had two delicious appetizers: black cod and a shrimp toast. Our entrees were just a little less delicious. Good, but no memorable: the pasta amatriciana with meatballs was a little odd because the meatballs' own sauce contrasted so highly from the pasta. It was a sweet/savory combination that just didn't satisfy (though by no means bad). The yellowtail over rice with a curried sauce was good but lacked some brightness, somewhere, through either acid or a particularly forward flavor. Everything in it eventually started to taste a little starchy. Our cocktails were quite good -- the eponymous drink of bourbon and St. Germaine with Lillet being particularly delicious and worth returning to the bar to try again.
Excellent night out with our daughter. We shared appetizers, small dish tasting and main menu item from London Nights special. We also had tea & sticking pudding for dessert. Pricing and value is actually very reasonable, however $8 for tea (packet at that) is ridiculous. Dessert was $7 & tea was $8. Crazy.
Ok, so it's Valentines Day and I make my reservation almost two weeks in advance as i know restos' get booked up in LA quick for this holiday. I went to website and it's gorgeous so I book on Opentable. I specifically reserve an outside table looking over the LA skyline. Perfect you think, right? Nooooooo...I get a call on Valentine's Day from the hostess informing me that my choice of seating was not possible, as this was a rooftop deck seating and the upstairs restaurant was closed in the winter and wouldn't open until April. And would it be ok if the restaurant below (which has a view) would be acceptable. As it was the day of, I really didn't have much of a choice but as I didn't know what the resto looked like, I trusted the hostess that I would still have a view. Unfortunately the decor is nothing like the photos online nor was there a view as they had shades drawn! The food was good and the waiter was very nice and patient but I'm very into decor/design and views.....So I wasn't impressed with the last minute change in my reservation which was not to my liking at all.
Does Ramsay still own this place - I do t think so. They seemed to have some of the dishes they used to serve, but it just wasn't the same as when it opened and GR was directly involved - sad! It was a really hot place to eat. Wasn't horrible, just not great.
I am a BAFTA member so that's why I decided to hold my first business luncheon there...unfortunately it was a Sunday so at first I was told it was 'Afternoon Tea' which
just was not the sort of fare I was interested in...after expressing this to our very polite server
Ryan, he swiftly presented us with a much better albeit limited menu....
Although 'Afternoon Tea' might be a once in a while nice idea, I do feel that we should be able
to access the regular lunch menu as well...my guests were also NOT interested in the Afternoon Tea, anyhow we ordered off the limited menu, were happy with our choice & server so it was overall a very pleasant experience. Will be coming back frequently since I intend to take full advantage of the LONDON/BAFTA partnership
I met my South Korean client here for afternoon tea and a business meeting. We were placed in a quiet, private area where we could talk openly in comfort. The decor and ambience were lovely. The service was top-notch. The food offerings were really wonderful. I can't wait to come back!
I made a reservation for a Sunday brunch at the Boxwood cafe for a birthday celebration. When we arrived, the café was closed and we were directed to the rooftop pool area. All of the tables had at least some seats in the direct sun, and the heat was intense. We left. This is not a good choice for a weekend brunch, unless the weather is cool and you don't mind sitting in the sun. The restaurant also needs to do a better job of advising their customers, in advance, that the café is closed for brunch and sitting inside is not an option
Appies were great ... especially the lamb and beef.
We were not happy with the burger...
Bun was stale and crumbly....beef patty was dry and way too salty.
However I am very picky with my food as I have dined all over the world. Vancouver and New York are still best places for high quality food if your willing to pay for it.
it's kind of sad to see such a large space be so empty. I mean it was totally silent with nobody in the bar on a saturday night at 8:30 or 9. Other than that, the food was really good. The salmon was one of the best I had ever had. I feel badly for this place because it is clearly not being marketed correctly or there's something going on that I do not understand. Decor is solid, not my taste but it's totally well appointed. Service is suffering only because the lack of clients so it felt as if a few people were doing multiple tasks which again is understandable.
I you wanted to have a really private dinner then you could totally have loads of privacy at this hound.
I went to Boxwood for Valentine's Day and I can say it was a special dinner! The three-course menu was nearly impossible to choose from because they all looked so good. Ultimately the server convinced my date and I to get the Beef Wellington, which is a specialty at Boxwood, and it wasn't a mistake. One of the best Wellington dishes I've had in my life--the meat was tender and the breading was crisp and salty.
The rest of the meal was great too (excuse my working backwards by starting with the entrée). I had the diver scallops with asparagus and my date had the spaghetti with black truffle. Both were incredible appetizers. The desserts were phenomenal too. I had the panna cotta with green tea ice cream and my date had the passion fruit creme brûlée. Being a sweet tooth, this was her favorite thing. The meal was flawless as a whole. I cannot recommend the Beef Wellington more.
The only real hiccup was the service. While I do not go to restaurants for service--I go for food--, Boxwood servers were often times forgetful and absent. I do understand it, it was Valentine's Day and the house was full. But having worked as a manager at Universal Studios, I can say that it is on management to ensure tht servers are on top of their assignments. It's hard out there on days like that. Even with that, though, our waiter was very nice, helpful, and delivered our courses in a timely manner.
All in all, Boxwood is a fantastic establishment! It operates professionally and the food is the star attraction. Not to mention it is really nice in there. Great place for a date or special occasion!
I called on Tuesday and Sunday just before our reservation to let them know that I needed a birthday cake. Both phone conversations went great. When we arrived, I asked the hostess if we could sit outside. It was a beautiful day. She was very short and kind of rude. My party of 4 and I just looked at each other and shut up. She led us to a large room with very few people dining and sat us right next to a couple having a romantic lunch. They could have at least seated us near the window since there were so many available tables. It was just uncomfortable. I was embarrassed that after a flight from NYC I took my friends HERE. They were so excited and had been looking at the menu all week. Well, to make it worse, we had to WAIT quite a while for our drinks. Which were ordered AFTER the appetizers. It was just a huge mess!!! The waiters were friendly. However, when I stepped away from the table to ask about the cake they didn't know a thing about it!! This was after two phone calls to the restaurant. So, I said GREAT. We left with our hungry friends, only having one drink and appetizers and went to another restaurant and waited for a seat. This was Valentines Day! Unbelievable.
Always a treat to be at Boxwood. Loved the crab toast, very generous, very tasty – rich and refreshing at the same time. The toast was surprisingly light. Loved the ratio of crab to bread. The chicken was very nice and rustic – lots of goodies in the rice – sauce, veggies, seafood – every bite was a treat. The caprese was a nice surprise – a totally different creative take with a new flavor profile and it worked!!! Delicious! Even the little caesar was good and just the right amount. Dessert was delightful – the donuts were light and airy and no one complains about the rich chocolate! And the sticky toffee pudding is always a winner.
All 3 courses of my meal were delicious and the portions were sizable. The service and presentation of each dish was superb. The decor is very rich but light. I would definitely recommend this restaurant. I was there for lunch. I'll have to visit at night to see how things are for dinner.
We spent a little over $200 on the dinner we ordered steak and my wife ordered salmon. The steak was under cooked and the salmon was fishy so we asked them to make another steak and my wife wanted a steak to replace the salmon . They sent back the same steak over cooked/well done and gave my wife the same salmon back cooked a little more. The team did not seem to communicate to the chef who what we were asking them to do or the chef simply did not care enough to get our order right for $200 there are far better restaurants in Los Angeles .
