Main chef was on vacation. Food was meh. Would’ve gone somewhere else had I known limited options and mediocre food
The food had to be returned because it was cold. Our meals did not come out together. the guacamole had large chunks of fruit in it and was not seasoned. The food was not tasty in general. Our waiter was friendly and did the best he could. The kitchen is in need of help. They should stick to serving beer.
Fab spot for after the train! Party of 11 with three kids. Great spot for families.
This was our second visit to BoxCar. Tonight we brought our daughter and grandmom for dinner. The restaurant was lively, but not crowded. Fish &chips were a hit, crispy and hot, which grandmom enjoyed. The chicken sandwich was a hit with our daughter, the foodie. The portobello mushroom sandwich was delish, the goat cheese, arugula and onion jam were packed with flavor. The burger, with portobello mushroom, bacon and cheese hit the spot. We were a little disappointed with the onion rings. They were a bit over cooked and the portion not as generous as on our first visit. My dining companions did not care for the dipping sauce. We enjoyed the special beer with mango and ginger. The vodka was also very good. We look forward to returning to this local establishment. 😊
Really great live music, great craft beer, good food. No cover! Just a really fun place to hang with friends.
The food was really good and they pride themselves on their beer. I had an excellent English ale. I will definitely return to sample more of both their food and beer menu.
First time here. It was OK but nothing special. Food was pretty good, service was fine. Beer was very good. But the ambiance was kind of funky. To be fair the first floor room was closed for a private party the night I was there. The public was directed upstairs to a room that seem to have few windows if any. I was like being in someones attic with poor lighting. It didn't come across very well. I might try it again but I am not in any rush. There are just to many other better places in West Chester.
My sister and I took out dad here before a show at the local theater to celebrate his birthday. We each had amazing meals and loved the house made chips, onion rings, burger with mac and cheese and bacon, tacos, and portabella mushroom sandwich. The beers were tasty and the prices were very reasonable. We would definitely go back!
Always a fun time! Love listening to Gunnar's group while meeting with friends and enjoying a delicious bite to eat.
It was a great evening-but they seem to rush you out ( even though we were the late seating). They had no coffee, or dessert. Left and got that elsewhere! We could have stayed and listened all night to the band, but the staff didn't encourage in any way, with asking if we'd like anything else...drinks, etc. just handed us the bill
Interesting food menu and beer menu. Inexpensive, friendly, solid.
Excellent food and beer, good service, nice venue for live music.
Everything was great. The service was friendly and were always there if we needed them. The beers they brew on premise were all delicious and the first one was on them during a promo. Creative food options and large portions. Good work.
My daughter and I went for dinner. Restaurant was mostly empty when we went (6:00pm) on a Wednesday night. We ordered poutine (french fries with toppings) for an appetizer. It was good but neither of us could taste the chorizo which was supposed to be on it. My daughter ordered the grilled chicken sandwich which said had cheese, bacon and avocado on it. When it came, it had some sort of guacamole spread inside of regular avocado. My daughter said it didn't taste good at all. The chef said avocados were out of season so he made that instead. Don't you have to use avocados to make guacamole? My order was the country gravy chicken sandwich. It was good, but I wouldn't order it again. The potato chips they put on the plate were horrible. We left and went to Couch Tomato to get my daughter a salad to go. I also overheard the manager telling the couple next to us she would not allow them to use a birthday coupon because it was only to be used on July 1 and I kept thinking - uh you have a customer in this empty place, why wouldn't you want them to come back? Or recommend it? I know I won't be back.
Dog friendly patio! Hit this spot up on Father's Day...it was about an hour's drive for us, but totally worth the travel. Great food, very attentive and pleasant service. Beer is very good- 1492 in particular is one of the best APA's I've ever tried. Highly recommended for anyone looking for a casual night out (or a lazy Sunday afternoon- they have a brunch menu!) and anyone looking to bring their dog along for a drink/meal on the patio. They had a water dish for her and everything.
Really loved this place. Food and beer was terrific. Great service as well. We went during the day for lunch so it wasn't crowded. Really fun atmosphere and vibe. Will definitely go back.
My husband and I ate lunch at Boxcar on Saturday. We really enjoyed the beer and the food was good as well. Our server was attentive and knowledgeable. It wasn't very crowded at that hour, so we had no problem carrying on a conversation. We would like to go back and catch either the jazz or other live music in the future!
The vibe was great, jazz music awesome, but food was terrible.
The restaurant wasn't as big as I imagined and we were seated at a high top (not good for 2 women under 5ft), but the food was good.
Wait staff above average for attending to my group of 4, except she did not know the drink menu. Younger crowd but I enjoyed the band Terretta's Storm
The first time I ever walked out of a restaurant! Went on a Saturday night with friends. Waited at the hostess station to check in with a reservation. No one acknowledged The bartender finally yelled over to us. We were seated in the back of the restaurant and waited and waited and still no service. Another party was seated next to us. After waiting an extended period of time A waitressed finally came over and proceeded to help the table who had been seated after us. It was at that point we got up and walked out. I would. Ever go back! The service was horrible. Servers standing around talking instead of help customers.
Awesome place. Great food and beer. Could use parking!
After arriving at Boxcar for a 6pm reservation, there was immediately confusion as to who our server was. Three separate people came to take our drink order. Not necessarily a bad thing, but just confusing. We then put in apps and beers, which were all great. Came out fine. We had to be at a surprise party at 730 right down the street, so we thought that ordering by 640, we'd be okay. Boy we're we wrong. After nearly 35 min, and still no update on our food, we were told "oh it'll be right out." 7:30 came around, the time we needed to leave, and still no food. Needless to say, we left hungry. We were only charged for what we had, and unfortunately couldn't leave a tip because we had nothing to tip for. Would definitely come back and give it another try. Hopefully we'll have a better outcome next time.
We went to Boxcar after hearing some good reviews about it, and were disappointed. We had to ask for refills on water, several times. It took almost 10 minutes from when we sat down at the bar to have some take our order and bring us a beer. We ordered an appetizer and a meal, and literally 2 minutes later, they were brought out. The meal - supposed to be hot - came out cold. We asked for another, and this time it was hot, and tasted pretty good.
Overall, we did not have a great experience, as we had high expectations. The servers were not in tune with each other, which kept causing delays in us receiving drinks or food.
We did enjoy the decor of the restaurant!
Last year's Comedy Derailment was awesome, prompting a return to this year's event. What a disaster in 2017! Why change something that wasn't broken?
We made reservations for dinner prior to the comedy show. The sign at the front door says "Please wait to be seated." Stood in the doorway with several others for at least 10 minutes. Desperately tried to make eye contact with the bartender, who was desperately trying to avoid our eye contact. Finally asked the bartender directly if there was a host. She said just keep walking into the dining room and someone will help us. Maybe that's what the sign should have said at the front door? Finally found a waitress and were seated.
Service was poor at a minimum. Drinks were slow, server never came back to check on our food. Asked the waitress where the comedy show was taking place, as last year there had been rows of seats in front of the stage. At this point, lost all confidence in our waitress, because we were told the comedy show was taking place "here." New waiter stepped in and was more helpful. He said no worries, we can just stay in our seats, as all of the "general admission" tickets were really just "standing room only" which was not disclosed when we pre-purchased our tickets.
Then the fun started, we were told we needed to move 10 minutes after the show was supposed to start. After the manager "fixed" the problem (I guess he was the manager, never introduced himself. May have been a guy who wanted our seats....) we were able to stay in the seats. Acoustics were terrible. Drunk divorcees who have never been in public before didn't shut up the entire night. Management was reluctant to keep control of the crowd. Overall, will never come back here again. The food is amazing, though! That was the highlight of the evening.
I think they gave me diahrea. I was sick after leaving their restaurant.
Good food, good value. Service was a little slow and yet restaurant wasn't very busy. Table tops and stools were really wobbly which made for a nerve racking experience. However, food and beer selection made up for it.
This was an awesome find! I'm very happy I found this place. This place is just cool.
Always awesome! Music is fantastic. A great time was had by all in our group of 9.
Our server was good but they were understaffed, hence the 2 star rating. Have been here to see live music before and had a great experience. The acoustic showcase, unfortunately, was disappointing ... primarily due to one musician. All in all though, I recommend the place.
Picked this place at random and it ended up being great. Food was delicious, and although we were there on a Friday night they were not pumping blasting loud music so I was able to hear conversation. Large projection screen for sports. Had a couch Area with a Disney movie on for kids, and giant Jenga, which appeared to be great for a few young 30-year-old parents with 6 to 10-year-old kids hanging out
Had dinner with my daughter - it being my first visit to Boxcar Brewpub, I didn't know it was jazz night - we had to almost scream at each other until we gave up trying to have a conversation. The venue is small, so it doesn't appear there are any tables far enough away from the stage for a quieter setting. The menu is varied and sounds delicious. The atmosphere is very inviting - if we lived nearby, it would be a great place to walk to on Friday evenings. Not to forget our server - she was very good:) and the beer - great!
Gunnar's band was awesome. Loved being able to get together with friends earlier in the night (7pm) and listen to great music and have a tasty bite to eat. I enjoy the atmosphere of the Boxcar and the beer is great too.
Food was ok, beer was very good. Live music is excellent. The jazz band was really good, but it is pretty loud when they are playing.
Great beer and great music. Server wasn't real attentive when we first arrived - for our table or the one next to us - but the rest of the wait staff was great. Management even checked in twice.
Great venue for music. Very friendly crowd. Excellent service. The food, however, leaves a lot to be desired. Ckn pot was WAY too salty; crab poutin-90% fries/10% crab. Other dished were OK. Flatbread was good. That, I would recommend. Wait staff was awesome! Very clean restaurant and lots of fun! A little tweaking will do wonders.
Serving local wines and liquor along with their own brewed beers...very unique
Fun!! Great Quizzo!! Excellent beer!! Not good cheesecake.
Great bar feel. 1492 & Passenger beers were excellent. Fish & steak tacos were good but pork tacos were too picked with onions. Ambiance and live music were great for New Years Eve.
Had a date for Jazz Dinner--performance by Gunnar Mossblad & Friends, mainly straight-ahead jazz with some bebop and Coltrane influences. Great music, lots of energy but not so loud that you couldn't converse a bit. Enthusiastic, supportive, mixed-ages, diverse crowd, very comfortable atmosphere. Nothing unusual in the food offerings (unless you count the many poutines), but well-prepared bistro basics. Very good service, fair prices, some solid beer offerings including site-brewed, extensive spirits list. Worth multiple visits!
